Was at the range yesterday and noticed that out of a half dozen other AR shooters I was the only one using iron sights. I had some glass with me and would use that to check the accuracy of my rifle and some handloads, but by and large I was just using iron sights on bullseye targets. Mainly because I like the challenge.

Rarely. Only when my aimpoints go down.....which hasnt happened, or when im doing m.y initial sight in witht he irons when i install them on my guns.
I realize optics are a luxury but what a great luxury they are to have. Evena zero paralax red dot optic beat my irons everyday and especially in the evening in fading light conditions. |
Rarely. Only time I use irons is when I need to zero or when my optic isn't working(dead battery).
50/50
Used to be strictly Irons, but my tired old eyes appreciate modern optics. |
Never.
I do see a lot of new shooters at the range using their iron sights, because they haven't wanted to spend money on an optic. And they're usually the people trying to shoot a 12" target at 25 or 50 yards. |
I haven't yet managed to cough up for decent optics, so every time I shoot my rifle(s). Which isn't all that often.
Mostly on my AR's. Unless set up for hunting. My others have boring, non-battery, scopes.
Almost always.
I have an ACOG and love it, but in competition against my friends, we shoot iron only--200 yards. |
I was an iron sight only guy my whole life. This past 2 weekends have me realsieing that Im old and can't see shit anymore. I ordered an Acog and two aimpoints. For Fucks sake.. WarDawg
I do keep my irons and co-witness - or at least get mbus pop ups on all my rifles, but I never use them exclusively
Every time I go to the range I turn off my Aimpoint for awhile.
Once in a great while.
Modern optics are very robust (aimpoint, ACOG, EOTEC, etc.) |

Iron sights on my M1, optics on everything else. I do remove the optics now and then to keep from getting rusty. Unfortunately sometimes my eyes don't want to co-operate.
Iron sights is all I have on my rifle, because I'm to cheap/broke to buy an optic
I shoot service rifle competition. All I use are irons these days. I did break out the 03A4 yesterday though. First time looking through a mounted scope in quite a while.
I gave up mounting scopes on my guns. The prices are getting crazy. Now I just snap on my iPhone to the universal mount on each of my rifles, call up my scope app. and I'm in business.
Seriously, anymore I use a scope on all my rifles. For me it does make a difference as my vision isn't what it used to be. |
Before I moved my AR's out of New York I had one with a co witnessed Eotech on it. The rest were all iron sights. Since I mostly shoot milsurps anyway, iron sights are normal for me. I will not purchase a rifle without them. For that reason most modern rifles don't interest me at all. I do have a Mosin Nagant 91/30 sniper model that was never refurbished. That rifle shoots sub MOA groups with the original scope I have on it. In the hands of a good shooter (not me) it would easily be a 1,000 yard rifle. It seems to love Privi Partizan 150 grain SP ammunition.
everytime on some rifles as they only have irons. On the one with an optic at least once a range session.
Whenever the TA31 fails.
Wait........... Seriously, I use them lots on other rifles. |
i'll fire three rounds just to confirm their zero, but 90% of my shooting is with the red dots.
I've always used iron sights on my AR's. I plan on using a red dot for my pistol build.
Some of my rifles have nothing but iron sights and will remain that way, others I have never used the irons except to check the zero.
I practice with both optics and irons. I always recommend to new shooters and new AR owners to throw on a set of irons and run for a while before investing in any kind of optic on their rifle. Especially those who are going to use a red dot. Because there's always that chance that the battery die or the optic otherwise fail when the chips are down, and if you can't hit shit with your irons, or don't have irons at all, it leaves you with very few options.

When I shoot my Garand.
Other than that, when I installed BUIS on my ARs. Zeroed, folded down, and shoot optics. |

I almost always use its iron sights. It's a rare outing that I use optics.
Which rifle? I have more than I can carry.
I have some with only iron sights and some with glass, and of course some with both. But since I am on the South side of 50 I tend to use glass.

Nope. I don't shoot black powder either... View Quote Then you are missing out on a lot of fun. Black powder shooting is awesome. Pull the trigger. World disappears in a cloud of white smoke. Duck and check results. Makes you a much better rifleman too. On flintlock there is on average a 1/2 second delay between trigger pull and ignition. With percussion caps it drops to about .2 seconds. If you flinch you are screwed. I have a lot of respect for those who can shoot black powder well. |
I have a few really nice optics but only use iron sights on both AR15s.

.223 AR is iron-sights only; the other 2 (.50 Beowulf, 6.8 SPC) are scoped with old-fashioned cross-hair scopes from Leupold- no batteries to go dead when I'm hunting.
