Just took my dogs out and my lab was about 6 inches from having a very bad night.
It is just hanging out getting on my nerves.
What is the standard load-out for porcupine?

The one and only porcupine I have ever killed was with one round of .40s&w. Hydro shock.

Pulled quills out of my lab's face with my teeth because that's all I had at the time.

.357 Mag is a good round and leave them where they fall for a message to the others...

A .22 LR properly placed does the trick.  Quite often they'll just stand there ground and let you walk right up.

.338 Win.

Makes a REALLY cool sound when it hits them from a distance. 'WHACKKK".

.22lr takes them out though. Just remember that they have a rather primitive CNS, and take a min. to figure out that they are dead.

I didn't think we had any here in south central Texas but 3 times in the last few years I've seen roadkill porcupines around here.

So I'm guessing Ford.

use a rifle round because of the thick pines. 556 OR 762 Ruskie will do just fine.

Had one in my backyard last year, was not paying attention taking the dog out and about tripped over it, luckily that is the end of the story.

I don't know what it requires, but the only time that I almost shot one, it was with a .375 RUM loaded with 300 grain Nosler Partitions.

I'm glad that I didn't have to shoot it.

You didn't have hands?
I've never even heard of anyone seeing one around here. I would like to eat it if I got the chance.

Hell, you can walk up to them and bonk them hard on the head with a stick. FYI you hit them moderately hard on the end of the nose they die right there. .177 pellet to the temple does it instantly too. Then again, if you shoot them in the wrong spot they can take alot of lead and die very inhumanely.

I watched them eat one on that discovery show in Alaska and although it was a stew I have to admit I wanted a taste.

Do a dinner pic with one and soar into the legends of dinner pics.

I've only seen one in my entire life, our youngest dog found it first and got 2 quills in the nose..before I could get there our oldest dog dequilled it with her face and then killed it. So a Rottweiler mixed with who knows what worked pretty good.

.204 Ruger, with a 32 grain bullet at 4,200fps.  That way, it will explode good and proper, and you can get a face full of quills.

12ga with anything a 12g shoots at the closest range is the best bet.

A deer rifle at distance is a fine substitute.

A .223 or 7.62/39 also works well.

Pistol caliber from a pistol too. And a bayonet, or fire. They can be killed with fire.

My Grandpa used to pop them racoons and skunks with a .22.
