What's really interesting is that same magazine did the very same thing several years ago, but it was chopped TWO inches at a time.

So, I guessing the next time they try it the barrel will be chopped half an inch at a time.

So the takeaway is that UMC ammo is horribly underpowered when compared to the M193 standard? Matches what I've seen with other UMC ammo.

Great writeup and no fluff. So what will be the finish length on the new barrel? What other work are you doing to the rifle? I like the finish on that rifle where did your friend get the work done? Keep up the good work. Glad to see a left hand rifle for once!

I don't like short barreled guns or ultra-lightweight guns

muzzle blast and heavy recoil screws up my ability to shoot well

That one is much more interesting since it goes below 16.5".

looks like 11" is about as short as one would want to go with a PDW type then, if using 5.56.

the PCC might be a better option if you want shorter, due to pistol carts being designed for shorter barrels.

That's an interesting velocity dip at 17", it's slower then 16.5" for three cartridges.

Yeah, I saw that.  interesting...
wondering if for the first three shots on the 17 inch barrel if there was something the rounds were getting caught up on in the barrel from the cutting down of the barrel. or something that was a miss in the riffling between the 16.5 and 17 inch zone

My guess it would be a function of relatively larger SD of the rounds.  Its possible to have 5 of each round be on the high or low side of velocity, results in the fairly small reported difference.  The crowns looked fairly clean in the pics.
