My Uncles, all proud life long Southern Pacific men, must be turning in there graves knowing Southern Pacific is no more, and was purchased by the Union Pacific.

I guess it could have been worse in thier eyes.  Southern Pacific could have been purchased by the Atchison, Topeka, and Sante Fe.

Thanks!

We also hit up Powell's books to find the missing books from a series my wife reads. In the aisle picking them out, a guy goes "Oh, that's a great one. James Lee Burke is what inspired me to write my book. His daughter wrote the intro blurb for it." I asked what it was called, and went and looked for it. The guy goes "Oh, it's over there. It was marked as a signed copy, but when I opened it up it wasn't signed, so I signed it." Neat getting to meet the author.

I need to get down there.

Since this thread is full of train pics, I'll add my own UP 6936 on a trip that took it through Portland a number of years ago, pic taken near the Albina yard.

It's an exceptionally nice facility. They spraypaint markers are on the ground out front for the turntable. Guess they're gonna start digging the hole soon. There's a really nice UP caboose out front too. The restoration on it is top notch. Even has schedules and rule books.

Besides, in WA the bar closes at 0200.  And, I can't believe what time last call is usually made at the bar close to my house.

IMHO, drinking in Portland, OR is BETTER.

Aloha, Mark

UP got Big Boy 4014 out of the LA County Fairgrounds for its restoration.  Should be moving from CA to Cheyenne, WY in the next week or two.

And "Thanks!" to OP for reminding me I need to get out my slides of 4449 and all the other steam locomotives I've got and get them scanned into digital format so I can post stuff like that here.

When I worked for GE a long time ago I got "sold" to a similar GE shop in Minneapolis for a week.  Their shop was in the same huge building as the GE Locomotive Shop.  I saw locomotives parked on the tracks inside and with the whole sheet metal body lifted off by an overhead crane.  That exposed all the innards for convenience.

I saw an engine from KCP&L in there and asked someone what was wrong with it.  The guy said that it was just in a week ago and sent back out again with a major fuckup - when the body was lowered back onto the chassis nobody bothered to hook all the wires back up.  None of the lights worked, etc, etc.

Look for the union label.

Love it . . . just like hot rods of that era, the aesthetics were just as important as the mechanical features.
