This doesn't look good.  Perhaps as many as 10 climbers missing.
http://www.cnn.com/2014/04/18/world/asia/nepal-everest-avalanche/index.html

The avalanche occurred just below Camp 2, maybe?
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/apr/18/mount-everest-avalanche-climbers

Reporting 4 to 6 fatalities and perhaps 9 still missing ...
http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/asia_pacific/avalanche-sweeps-everest-4-5-believed-buried/2014/04/17/56438c9e-c6a8-11e3-b708-471bae3cb10c_story.html

_________

If this did happened low on the route,
it sort of reminds me of the avalanche on the North face of Mont Blanc du Tacul in 2008, where 8 climbers were killed in an avalanche on what's perhaps the most pedestrian part of the route to Mont Blanc via Aiguille du Midi. Peu Difficile is all this section was rated, "not hard", just the beginning of what was supposed to be a long slog across a couple of peaks to the top of Mont Blanc, proper.  And then, boom, avalanche at 3AM, right as they are beginning the climb ...

__________

UPDATE:
Here's a more thorough description of what happened and where.
http://www.climbing.com/news/deadliest-day-on-everest/

Looks like it happened in the Khumbu Icefall, below Camp 1.  I think that place has been best described as a "time bomb".

Yeah, really.  Climbing Mount Everest is a stupid, dangerous endeavor that rich people do to impress their friends.

I do feel bad for the sherpas, though.  They're only trying to earn a living.

Also, I noticed the "I'm so fucking tough, other people died and I don't give a fuck because I think the things other people enjoy are stupid, but everything I do, of course, is righteous" people are both from places that don't have mountains. I wonder if either of you have ever climbed a mountain, or understand that for many who climb, it's not a game or stupid, it's place where people find challenge and peace. But you're too badass to understand that...

I did not say it was not a challenge.    I did not put it down.    I merely stated that the guys doing it are doing it for a challenge, to push themselves to the limit.   The guides, and especially the Sherpa, are doing it to put food on the table.
I have respect for the climbers, but I have more respect for those that fall in the line of work or duty.

These things do, indeed, happen; however, it's the scope and possibly the location of the slide that makes this stand out.

The climbers killed in the avalanche were seasoned, and to have so many of these guys just wiped out by what appears to be the sheer dumb luck of a massive avalanche - wow, that puts our small place on this big Earth into perspective.

Like you said, that mountain has been uplifting and sloughing off massive chunks for millions of years.  Having only been scaling this thing for the blink of an eye humans have largely been absent when these larger events happen.

Porters and Sherpas have always been a part of the Everest climbing scene.

Originally, the place was remote and uncharted enough that the only way to get your supportive gear in there and high enough to make a legitimate attempt on your own was through the assistance of Sherpas.

Over time, as better information, knowledge base and access were developed very lightly supported / unsupported attempts were possible.

Over more time, the commercialization of the mountain has pretty much mandated a heavy reliance on Sherpas.

Today, even if you go in there on an unsupported expedition of your own, you are most likely going to be crossing through the Khumbu on trail broken and established by other teams' Sherpas earlier that season. [it all depends on the particular route, of course]

I've been in that area and I've done a little bit of climbing. People climb because they think it's fun. It can be an obsession, like being in love.
It has nothing to do with impressing your friends.

sarcasm.... google it.

For many years after Hillary's ascent, the general public never gave the sherpa that accompanied him any credit for making the ascent with him.
It was as if people only mentioned Neil Armstrong went to the moon first without recognizing Buzz Aldrin (or to a lesser extent Michael Collins).
If Tenzing was a white dude, he might have been more well known at the time.
