I do not own any type of AR.
I did not ever plan to buy one either... Until I bought a couple of Airsoft M4s. I bought my first Airsoft a couple of months ago after my neighbor bought one to play around with in his back yard. I shot his and had so much fun that I bought one myself. Today my second one arrived (bought here on the EE) and I immediately broke it out and started blasting cans in the back yard. It is so much fun that I now want to get a real one to play with. Now grated, I own 3 M1As and an M1 Carbine, but realistically the M1A is not a plinker and .30 Carbine is more expensive to shoot than my .30-06. So I think it is time to get an AR type rifle. So, the question is... Do I buy one off the shelf or build one? The answer is - I'll probably do both. |

I didn't either till about a few months ago I got one of the $40 lowers and put together a classic SP1 style that I really enjoy.

The answer is leave California, and then both.
Don't own one, by the way. I want one. The money's just not there though. I've been really tempted lately to buy one of those PSA blemished lowers and kit one together over time though. |

Build.
But if you have to buy off the shelf, start with something like the M&P Sport as there is much more popularity gaining for rifles which are cleaner looking. I never use a F/A anyway and most will say it's not really needed. |

Don't worry about it. Put all your funds into moving out of that horrible "state" CA. Then buy/build an AR.

I think telling someone new to the platform to build one for his first is bad advice.
I know on my first one I didnt know enough to know what I wanted or didnt want or what was just marketing fluff. My advice is to buy a cheap one. $600-$700 bucks max. And shoot the snot out of it. When you are done shooting and there is no more snot, shoot it some more. By then you will know exactly what you want. You will know all about the rifle. You will know what parts to put money into and what to buy cheap. Just my opinion though, whatever you decide, have fun. |

Build....but from scratch. None of this wimpy buying a lower and an upper and stickin' a couple pins through them to make a AR. Do it the right way. Molten metal and shear will....

I built all of mine but nothing wrong with buying off
the shelf if that is what you want.

Build one.
Knowing how your rifle works, what all the parts are, having a toolbox with a complete set of AR building tools, and buying two or three of certain parts so you have a decent spare parts kit is priceless. |

My M1A's are .308, I also have a Savage 110E in .30-06. If I really want to reach out I'll use my 6.5-06.
I was talking to a buddy at work about buying an AR and and another friend told me he has a part time job at the new Turner's. So I went there tonight to see what they had. They actually have a very good selection ranging in price from $649 to $2795. I handled at least a dozen different ones including Anderson Manufacturing, DPMS, Colt, Daniel Defense, LMT, American Tactical, Franklin Armory, S&W, PSA, and Del-Ton. I ended up buying an S&W M&P15T and a Franklin Armory stripped lower that was on close-out. Unfortunately, I was limited to only 7 boxes ammo. I chose the S&W based on how it felt in my hands, the features and the price. I ended up getting it for $1099 and I think I did okay for Kali. I go on travel next week so I'll start to read the AR building forum while I'm in the hotel and put together a parts list. |

Just go to WalMart and buy one already . Worry about building your second one after you've picked up the proper tools .

Buy a cheap one. CHEAP. Like, barely-working-so-its-almost-free cheap. A real fixer-upper.
Take an armorers course. Take that cheap POS and rebuild it from the ground up. After the course, take it apart and put it back together on a regular basis. Shoot it, take notes on what you like/don't like about any of it. Now, take what you've learned and build one. Or just buy a nice new one. That's how I would do it, if I had it to do all over. |
