I was listening to NPR covering the submersible's status. Found myself wondering the same thing and who picks up the tab?

They have to spend vast amounts of time and money to keep the illusion plausible.

when a mysterious plane flies into an iranian nuke facility and no one knows where it came from then you will know why we need to prove its on the ocean floor. kind of odd we know 2 fake passports were used on the same plane that has vanished from the face of the earth.....

to give closure to the families who've been subject to fucked up tinfoil theories? I can't even imagine what it must be like to keep hearing they might be alive, they were taken hostage, etc... |

Seems like a huge waste to me View Quote Yep. It would be simpler, cheaper, to strip out all of the oxygen tanks and generators, wire the cabin vents open, and restrict flight above FL 12. |

View Quote Funny you should ask, as the liberals are squealing that airlines should be required to reimburse any search/rescue/recovery costs. Next they would be squealing about the fat cat 1% airlines doubling their ticket costs. |

It'd be nice to know what happened, so we could maybe prevent it from happening to other airplanes.
It gives the Navy something to do. It's good to learn how to find important things in deep water. |

do you think US vessels sitting in the middle of the ocean with nothing to do is free?

Seems like a huge waste to me View Quote It is. It's also what humans do. “Our behavior is different. How often have you seen a headline like this?--TWO DIE ATTEMPTING RESCUE OF DROWNING CHILD. If a man gets lost in the mountains, hundreds will search and often two or three searchers are killed. But the next time somebody gets lost just as many volunteers turn out. Poor arithmetic, but very human. It runs through all our folklore, all human religions, all our literature--a racial conviction that when one human needs rescue, others should not count the price.” Robert A. IIRC, the airline will pay a good chunk of the cost, so will the aircraft manufacturer. I'm sure Boing is quite interested in WTF happened to it's airplane.
China has probably spent more on jet fuel than anyone, and they want to join the 1st world, which means you give two shits about your citizens. Much of arfcom, it would seem, wants to join the 3rd world. Maybe there is something to the Somali flags.

In the age of modern commercial airline travel, we need to know why.

One of the most sophisticated, safest, high-tech planes in the world disappears into bumfuck nowhere, taking 300+ people with it.
That's not supposted to happen, to several decimal places. And we still don't know it is where we think it is. What if it happens again? We genuinely need to know what happened. The amount of $$ spent on finding it is probably less than the cost of the plane + legal settlements. |

Quoted: The legal settlements alone are going to be close to, if not more than a billion. The search cost is nothing, it's just going to finger who pays. View Quote EH.... that's a little steep. They've already set aside something like $130M in a fund for settlements. The families from countries with a civil law system most likely will not fare very well. The ability to recover more than what the treaties allow hinges on the fact that the plaintiffs must show the airline was negligent as opposed to the pilots acting intentionally. If the pilots are found to have acted intentionally. then the treaty maximums should apply. I THINK it was insured by Alliant, and I assume they are going to be arguing the crash was intentional and not an accident. There are so many quagmires in this debacle, it's going to be very interesting to see how the Malaysian courts deal with it all. |

Sorry but this search/recovery is not the problem or responsibility of this country. I can see assisting with a search as a sign of good will for the first two weeks as this point it's a total waste of time and money. |

Instead, anti-American exceptionalism sentiment let "less capable" Malaysia run with the ball...and they fumbled. |
