Did you miss the thread title?
This is a '70's era thread. Most of you wanna-be's were still shitting yellow back then. If you rode in the '70's then chime in.

By the mid 70's I had been riding for 20 years.  Don't have any photos of my early bikes but here are some pics from 1959 - 1960 in Morocco.

And my 72 Chopper.

I put over 200,000 miles on this 84 Goldwing including four rides to Sturgis.

THAT'S the truth!

I was in the motorcycle business back in the 70s and 80s....I remember the AMF Harley's.....they came from the
Factory dripping HUGE puddles of oil.

AMF = Another Mechanical Fuckup

I get the point of your post, and if I were you, I would be furious to be associated with the new generation of Harley owners.  Note that I didn't say riders.

It's a rolling gay fashion show now, completely devoid of any mechanical OR riding skills.

Here's my 70's foreign invasion bike OP with a bit more style and class than any AMF vomit from that era.

Right, you had to because Harley didn't do such a great job from the factory.

I just never understood why people spend 50% or more to make their Harley "what they want" or "Individual", especially when everyone else does the exact same thing to their Harley's.

Dreamin' Beagle must love you guys....

That bike has some messed up proportions, just seems all a bit off.

I don't really care for Harley's though, not to mention the sort of people who ride them.

Its pretty much impossible for most of arfcom to have any understanding of Harley Davidson, especially back in the days before the RUB's came along and changed it all.  Riding or owning a Harley was a lot more than just wearing Converse sneakers, long hair and racing around on some shit Jap bike like the ignorant fools most foreign bike riders were.  Of course it took a lot more to keep those older Harley's running too.  That was a pain in the ass and seems to get forgotten as years pass.

On arfcom most members can do super tuning of an iPad or smart phone (after all, most of teh arfcom are IT tech geeks), smoke dope like the Grateful Dead and dress like the faggot hipsters they are trying to be but cannot under any circumstances understand, let alone handle, a Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Got a couple of each. One from an SOHC 750 Four, another from a GL1100A. Special pouch and all.

They were the most unused things on the bikes, except when pressed into service wrenching my known associates' collection of Milwaukee iron back onto the road during our many runs together. It wasn't always the old pans or generator shovels breaking down, either. You really do have to winterize your bike in Ohio and bring the battery in during the storage season. Failure to do this for several years in a row - or even check the electrolyte level - will result in your late model Road King not going anywhere after you've ridden it 50mi past BFE.

Must be a big motorcycle rally in Phoenix this weekend, saw at least a thousand Harley's while driving today. Such a pleasure to listen to and share the road with as they straddle two lanes.

What's it like to have your self worth tied up into something you bought that they made thousands of?

Actually, the scoot I posted above, I built for 3800 bucks.

Yes, three thousand and eight hundred dollars.

Key word's....I built it.

The start of my newest build.  The parts collection starts.

I'm still designing the bike in my mind.  I have the basic design but still tweaking some ideas.  It's gonna be an Old School Chopper.

I think revving noisily in the driveway, riding slow, and not turning is a fairly easy proposition no?

Speaking of building...

I have a collection of Accel Thunder Twin EFI systems and related parts (including the programming software and cables) which may or may not get used for a build or two. These were designed to replace the carb on an '84-'99 Evo motor of stock displacement and stock tune - but the cam was changed to (IIRC) a Crane Fireball 110-B.

Accel offered a nitrous system for the setup, and I think I did enough reverse engineering to figure out most of it - with the exception of the solenoid triggering circuit.

Has anyone in thread messed around with this particular EFI setup? I wouldn't mind using one on an FXR and another on a Fat Boy or some other Softail variant. That is, if I can get some data on the NOS accessory. The main owners/tech manual doesn't cover it.

I was at a metric dealer yesterday looking at a DL1000.  I have been throwing around the idea of getting rid of my Street Glide.

I have come to realize that a lot of Harley riders are jackasses just like a lot of sport bike riders are jackasses.  This was compounded when I was pulling out of the lot on the DL1000 for a test ride with some guy one one of the new Triumph cafe bikes in front of me.

Three guys on Harleys ride by one guy hands off the bars staring this guy on the Triumph down, over his shoulder as he passes, and the other two fags revving the engines like retards.  This is exact evidence of why the Harley crowd is hated.

Me I don't care what someone wants to ride.  To each his own, and BTW the DL1000 was awesome.  Quiet, nimble, comfortable, and POWER, OMG!

Met a man who gas a small shop tucked in the basement of a coffee shop local.   He has three Norton Commandos  in there he had rebuilt.   One is the bright yellow Commando I remembered from the poster that showed the bike with the bikini clad girl sitting on it.  That was early seventies.
He won't sell that because it's his favorite due to the same poster.

He does have a black 850 he's willing to sell though.   I may have to negotiate a deal with him on it!

I currently have a 96 HD Road King with about 72k on it and a Suzuki Volusia that's up for sale.   I think I will actually add a dual sport like a DR 650 to the mix.
I have ridden Hondas mostly starting with the Z50 Mini-Trail, an SL 100, 550-Four, HD Sportster, CBR, the Volusia and the Road King.

If it's got two wheels, ride it and enjoy it!

But the Commando is calling to me.......

Had a 1974 XLCH. Bought it 1979, rode the hell out of it. I know what you mean. Not many know how to
keep an Iron head sporty running right. Rode it back and forth from NE Minn. to Norfolk , Va. It NEVER left me stranded.

I always did the trip in two days. 1,650 miles on a seat 3/4 of an inch thick. Aw, to be young again. Went on to build a 74" shovel in
a 57 rigid frame. Ended up totaling that one by taking out a Subaru wagon. It pulled out in front of me and I hit the front drivers side wheel.
It was hanging horizontal when the tow truck hooked it up. lol

I quit Harleys when the yuppies took over. It just wasn't the same. Fuckers all tatted up, HD clothes, but never rode more than 100 miles.
Sold my 58 Panhead and after a year without, bought a Warrior. Still like the v-twin I guess, but wanted to be different.
It's really funny when the "newbie" HD riders look down their nose at me. If they only knew what I've done/seen, and once was.

Oh well. If you like to ride two wheels, you're cool with me. I don't care where you spend your money.
58 Pan in an older wishbone frame. Rear juice brakes, 1937 VLD Springer

Don't forget the govt tariffs on those foreign bikes that were putting the motor co out of business. HD has been propped up as much as GM.

Only in delusion land is a tariff on foreign competition equivalent to a government buy-out of a company.

They were saved from bankruptcy also.

By the time the 1980s tariff took effect, H-D no longer needed it. It was all a shakedown in which Harley tried to leverage the threat of a tariff to secure loan guarantees from the Japanese government. This is all old news.

As for the money they got in 2008-2009, they didn't really need it. H-D were nowhere near bankruptcy, losing only about $55,000 in 2009, the worst year they had. Billion-plus-dollar companies that lose $55,000—about the salary of one of their average workers—are not on the brink of bankruptcy. Only the financial arm was anywhere near trouble. They took it because the money was made available to them. Hell, even McDonald's took money when the federal government offered it during that period. Did the government bail out McDonald's?

So they lied to the govt to get an unfair advantage, and took govt money they didn't need? Sounds like trailer trash FSA to me.

Nope. They needed it when they applied for it, and they were right to apply for it because the Japanese were doing exactly what Harley accused them of—dumping. Because of a personal dick-measuring contest between the presidents of Honda and Yamaha, those manufacturers were dumping bikes in the US to see who would come out #1 in sales. This is all a matter of record. No one disputes it.

But it takes time for the wheels of Congress to engage, so by the time the tariff took effect, H-D no longer needed it, but they did try to use the threat to squeeze loans out of the Japanese government.

The was not the taking of government money.

It's a love/hate thing. Who else builds an air cooled, roller bearing bottom end, pushrod motor? Briggs and Stratton...........

Oh yeah, the 45 degree cylinder, male female connecting rod set up. It's ridiculous. Still love 'em.
