Flight Tracker, "results unknown". God damn if my flight track ever says that.

The Flight Aware track makes it look like it never got out over water. It's 9:35AM over there. If it went down, even in dense foliage, it seems like something that big, with that much fuel on board, would have been spotted by now.

The article says they know it didn't have enough fuel. How did the pilots leave without enough fuel? And even then, apparently didn't realize it until it's too late?
Unbelievable. |

Watching skyNEWS they said:
13 nationalities on board China said 160 are Chinese citizens Malaysia Airlines is contacting family members of passengers and crew. |

Hope all is good and the plane turns up ok.
Malaysian Airlines is one of the best flights I've flown, good times |

The fuel info is unclear. It could mean that they started with 7.5 hours of fuel (6 hour flight) or they had 7.5 hours of fuel when they lost contact two hours into the flight.
Neither suggests inadequate fuel at the beginning of the flight (if 7.5 hours meets reserve requirements). |

Can a 777 turn off it's transponder and run silent? Could it have defected? I imagine it shows up pretty well on radar. From what some pilot friends have told me, civilian radars don't do a skin paint. They depend on the transponder telling the radar where it is in the sky. With no transponder a radar would have a hard time tracking. |

I don't know anything about the telemetry systems on planes, but I would think for a plane to simply 'disappear' that it would take a fairly catastrophic event...as in something would need to instantly and completely take out the communication equipment. I'm having a hard time envisioning a plane cruising along and all of a sudden all comms stop....except in the event of a significant explosion or other event that would take out the electrical supply.

The apparent lack of an emergency call interests me. How often do airliners go down without getting off a mayday? Mostly when they are shot down......well, that or To that end, I find it rather interesting that one of the first follow-up news stories is "China claims" plane was in Vietnamese airspace when it disappeared. Wonder did somebody at a SAM site on the border not get word that the aircraft on their radar was a friendly? I recall a 767 was shot down some years ago with a SAM fired by the Russian military when somebody didn't get the word. |
|
|
I'm hoping for the best but it doesn't look good. As a couple others have mentioned, for them to "disappear" at cruising altitude would require a significant event that took out the power supply. The only thing I can think of that fits the bill is an explosion.
FWIW, I have flown Malaysian Airlines many times and it seemed very professional. |
