There aren't a lot of good scenarios in the "airliner disappears and no radio calls are heard" play book.

In today's world it is sad that an aircraft going down with all passengers if far from the worst case..

Doesn't sound good tho.

The apparent lack of an emergency call interests me.  How often do airliners go down without getting off a mayday?

Can a 777 turn off it's transponder and run silent?  Could it have defected?

3 hours late now, anyone have any idea if its possible they have enough fuel to even still be in the sky?

Hope it finally lands and everyone is ok...

Well, they gotta come down somewhere and it's kind of hard to hide an 800,000 lb. airplane.

As for no radio contact, you have the VHF emergency frequency, SATCOM and even HF.  Most of the way from Malaysia to PEK is over or near land, I think.  Plus, that airplane sends automatic position reports via datalink with the SATCOM.  Pretty well connected.

Not good.

Really not likely.  Airlines fuel only what is required for the trip and extra for an alternate and some tooling around but not three hours worth.

My guess is it went down, should have landed in Beijing almost 3 hours ago.

Prayers for the passengers and crew that I am wrong.

I suspect that you can find multiple fatal crashes were there was no mayday.

If it landed at a commercial airport, that should be known by now.  Almost everyone has a cell phone.

How would you keep it secret?

There are ways it could happen but they seem remote.

I sort of assumed that - these days - aircraft constantly communicate their positions to their respective agencies via a satellite data link.

Is that not the case?

It is. So unless they had some kind of catastrophic electrical system failure, if it were in the sky it would be pinging. Unless they had to divert to/got missile tested by Best Korea.

They were way off course if they were close to North Korea.
