When the south rises again tries to come back to power, I guess we just have to wait for winter and sit tight up here.

Driving up here to overtake the north will be harder for them than invading Syberia
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. If so, it's too subtle for me.

If not, you're simply lying.

Sorry, 4 wheel drive will not help you on ice. Neither will "chains" which are not readily available down here. If you think I'm wrong feel free to come on down sometime and show us how it's done.

Second, shut the hell up about not having enough snow plows and salt trucks. We don't get this weather often enough to justify the expense. Why don't you Yankees do what we do when we have these winter storms? When you guys have big storms like Hurricane Sandy we send our people up to help in the form of electric power trucks to help restore the electricity up there. Do we ever see any of your salt trucks or snow plows down here? No? Okay then shut up.

Speaking of hurricanes, for the most part we are prepared for those down here because they happen often, just like the north is prepared for winter storms. Unlike Sandy, we didn't make fun of New Jersey for not being as prepared for the storm because they don't happen that often up there, we sent help. We have have a snow/ice storm, 1,000 of people stranded on the roads and what do I hear from Yankees? "I hate the South! You'se guys don't know how to drive in the snow.

Just shut up.

That is a perfect example why people in the south don't care for people from up north. They are rude, lacking manners and don't give a shit about anyone but themselves. I'm glad I grew up knowing this was the way it is so I don't get screwed over by one. It's saved my ass more than once. How's that saying go, "I wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire?"

No, "I wouldn't piss down his throat if his heart was on fire." Git it right!

I love it. "It's ICE" Duh. As if we don't have ice here. There's ice all over the roads here...all winter long. We manage just fine without chains. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen anyone with chains in WI in all the years I've lived here. IIRC I think it might even be illegal on public roads. Some people have snow tires, but most don't and we still get along just fine.

I'm certainly not happy about anyone who's been hurt down there, but at the same time I can't help but find it a bit comical that conditions people wouldn't even bat an eye at up here is the apocalypse down there.

I am from the rocky mountains. I am currently in Alabama.

I've seen bad roads. It isn't a question of anything but experience and familiarity.

And yes, I rib my southern buddies here as appropriate.

Now now....everyone seems a little too upset over this. It is true that we in the South have a tough time driving in the snow and ice because we really do not see it very much. It is sort of like you Yankees and how you cannot play football...you so rarely see any of your teams win the BCS Championship.

See while that might be going overboard, that IS knowing how to drive in the snow. Slow down and take your time versus crash and abandon your cars.

Actually, it was people that had a 1/4 tank of gas that ended up abandoning their cars after they ran out of gas, majority of them any way.

Ive lived in the south and the north, originally from the south though. YOU CANT DRIVE ON ICE. Period.

Another couple things come into play in the south besides the obvious. One, its pretty much impossible to find snow tires, hell its even hard to find all season tires around here. Most local tire shops only carry summer/performance tires for many wheel sizes. From experience, a summer tire SUCKS in the snow.

The other thing, with the big cities like Birmingham and Atlanta, no one was expecting this snow. Usually every one stays home if winter weather is in the forecast, but it wasnt this time. My dad lives in Birmingham and when he went to bed Monday night the local news said the weather would be well south of them. Well it wasnt and they got hit. When they got hit every one hit the roads at once. Atlanta traffic is a NIGHTMARE on a good day and that is with a three hour "rush hour" window. I cant imagine the absolute hell when a million+ people hit the road all at once in that weather.
Not only can I drive on that (and do, with regularity), I will drive on that, this weekend. On live video. Because freezing rain is coming to NE Ohio, this weekend.

Face it - you southerners suck at this shit. I'm not even going to cheat and use a 4x4 truck (even though I own one). I'm going to do it (live) in a gay-ass RWD convertible Miata. Seriously, you guys are pussies. That video ain't shit. Get some fucking tires.

Doubt it if you want, but there was some places that it was that thick. Others, not so thick. Took those places with the thick patches of ice over a week to thaw out.

I remember visiting Boone, NC one winter. They got an inch or so of light fluffy snow. No ice underneath or anything. Stuff we wouldn't even bat an eye at. Saw someone in a 4x4 chained up and trying to drive normal speeds . Bet they didn't have any fillings left after that trip .

In South Carolina, the "North" are the states we fought against. They are referred to as Yankees. Most of them that move here and stay are referred to as "damn Yankees".

Wyoming falls under "West".

Some lady was mad that her road hadn't been instantly plowed on a weekend night
I tried to be really polite in explaining that it was equally bad all over and the plows would get to her road eventually.....

Yes you can drive on ice. I drive on ice all the time in the winter.

That video doesn't even look that bad compared to some of the shit I've seen.

It's actually kind of cute watching that video. Southerners out taking video of something that is just day to day life up here in the north. That doesn't even look very slippery.

We get people that panic and forget how to drive every time it rains or snows even here in Missouri. I love watching them city boys with their 4 wheel drive trucks get stuck in a couple of inches of snow.

4WD will help with going from a stop and pulling hills or loads, can also help with directional stability.
I spent 19 years in interior AK where ice is an issue more often than snow, I was born in NC and have returned, these sorry f'ers can't drive on dry roads, and slow down way further than neccessary on wet ones, they lose their damned minds when it freezes, and can't seem to tell wet from frozen, and continue to creep along even on the dry stretches. This shit ain't complicated and astounding numbers fail here.

I've had chains for years. Never used them because one minute you're on an iced over road and the net on bare payment. Chains don't do well on bare pavement.

Ice is worse to drive on when the temperatures are near freezing, didn't you know?

Most Southerns are driving all season tires and don't have chains (I do personally own chains).

If I took away your snow tires, chains, plows and salt trucks, you'd probably do better than the average Southerner with 2 inches of ice on the roads and temps in the mid 20s, but you'd have problems.

It simply doesn't make much economic sense to have plows and snow tires in regions where this weather seldom occurs. The price you pay for this is that every decade or so you have a major snarl up.

Bull Shit!

I have driven on ice for the past 2 or 3 months this winter. And at least 4 or 5 last winter, and the winter before that, and the winter before that, and on and on.

What it comes down to, is a majority of the drivers in the south are simply inexperienced in driving in winter weather and the ones who are or can have to avoid the ones that were dumb enough to go out in it knowing full well they weren't prepared for it.

I have driven on ice like on that bridge regularly when I lived in BFE central ND where there were all of 3 plows in the county for the highways.

Yeah, Wyoming is pretty liberal. You do realize not all of the "North " is on the east coast or run by libs?

In South Carolina, the "North" are the states we fought against.

Wyoming falls under "West".

Take a lot more day laborers to push it with a snow plow on it.

See while that might be going overboard, that IS knowing how to drive in the snow. Slow down and take your time versus crash and abandon your cars.

LOL, sorry but if I remember correct there were somewhere between 5-10 accidents on the way. But at least most just ran off the road and not pinto someone else so you can feel good about that part.

Must have been a flat lander tourist. I lived in Boone for a while and never saw anyone driving with chains if they weren't tourists. They get 12+ fairly regularly and 2-3 feet at a time occasionally they know how to keep the roads in decent shape most of the time. I drove an '84 Accord with all seasons and got around find.

Looking forward to that! Going uphill on a 1/4" slick as snot sheet of ice with out sand or salt or brine or even a layer of crushed snow on it is pretty impressive! Ive been through ice storms, including the 2009 ice storm that ravaged KY and I still have yet to see any one be able to drive up hill, start from a stop or stop on smooth, untreated ice.

And like you said and know, tires make a HUGE difference. You couldnt find snow tires for your miata and frankly would have a hard time finding all seasons stocked in a local small tire shop here either. A good tire will help but I still dont see how you could have stopped coming off that bridge if you suddenly had to such as at the stop light about 200 yards from the bottom.

I just dont know how this southerner managed to live and drive in winter weather in north central KY for several years with out issue but couldnt drive last night. I mean proper tires, salt trucks and snow plows dont mean anything right?

Huh. You know, that sounds exactly what we call "fall" and "spring" up here. Amazing the different types of words we use to describe it. And our salt trucks don't bother salting any of the side streets when these amazing and exceedingly rare events occur. And yet somehow, we get by, most of us without snow tires, studs, or chains. Fascinating.

Seriously, it's lack of experience. Not that you should be blamed for it; you can't deal with the snow, and we can't deal with the heat.
