It's time for the next edition of my Taxidermy series threads.
The Dall Sheep. My dad shot this last summer up in Alaska. He was very proud of his trophy, but tells me that his Big Horn sheep is still his favoriteBig Horn Sheep thread, as he hunted for 15 days, many on his own at 68yrs of age. This hunt was guided of course, but was still very challenging. He's in very good shape for 69yrs old. The shot was much more difficult than anything previously, as it was almost vertical, and he shot over the sheep twice before connecting with his .338win mag. You can see from one of the photos the angle of the shot. We put in the ballistics into my phone when he got home and found he was shooting about 10 inches too high. The distance was relatively close. I believe it was only 150-200yrds. Anyway, he asked me to do this sheep for him, as he was very pleased with how the Big Horn turned out. I'm a lot more confident about this than I was the Big Horn. There will be challenges, I'm sure, but it shouldn't be too bad. I'm going to have the student working on the wolf right now, help out with this too. My dad was good with that too. Here are a few photos from his hunt. He's the older guy in the funny hat. You can see the angle of the shot in this photo. Steep! </a>" /> </a>" /> As it tumbled down the hill, one of the horns came off. Good, less to do later. Here is the tanned cape. It was tanned up in Alaska. It has a lot of blood stain that needs removed. We measured it this morning and ordered the form today. Should be here later this week. </a>" /> |

I wish I had my Dall Sheep
I shot a record holding Texas Dall in 2006 and had it sent to a taxidermist for a shoulder mount. After over a year with no updates...I found out second hand that the taxidermist had died and his wife sold everything of his and left town So I'm out $350 and a record holding Texas Dall |

Not sure what the heck is going on with the photos being rotated. I loaded them from my iPad. That's probably whats going on. I rotated them again, but they are still showing up sideways. Sorry.

Very cool. Wish there was a way to auto-sub to threads created by you. =]

Congratulations to your dad, hope it turns out as good as the bighorn. Is the cape in better shape than that was, at least?

There are plenty of holes my dad made. There are also some shitty holes from someone who sucks at skinning, or just wasn't very careful. Time will tell. It all looks manageable. The fit should be perfect for the form we ordered. |

Very nice Dall. I've been thinking of getting a breeding pair and seeing if there is any money in selling them to the game ranches.

Update 2/3 Form came Friday. View Quote I think they sent the wrong one, it doesn't look anything like the pic there with it..... :) Good luck, looking forward to following this thread like the rest. My wife says she wishes she had a teacher like you when she was in school. I agree. Onyx |

Update 2/11 We cut the skull today to fit on the form. We leave a little of the eye socket so that we can match it up to the form. It insures we don't get the distance from the eye to the horn wrong. That can suck if it's too much. Tomorrow, we are going to build a base for the form to go on the wall, then work on the skull and horns. The rest of the skull will be used in the Wolf mount. http://<a href=http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7342/12465933264_8def247614_b.jpg</a>" /> View Quote You went Spikes Tactical on it! I'd have thought the horn cores would be longer than that compared to the caps. I had a domestic ram skull without caps years ago, the cores made over a half curl themselves. |

Update 2/13
We got the form up today. The "cross" will turn into rocks later, but for now, it provides a way for the "pedestal mount" form to hang on the wall. In the picture, the flat yellow board acts as our wall, and the cross and mount are just hanging on a screw. It's kind of cool, cause we can rotate the sheep to whatever direction is best for the room it will be in; or change it up when my dad gets tired of looking at it from a certain view. " /> |

I wish my mounts were on a rotation-type base. I'll have to keep that in mind. |
