All the time with this.  Try normal clippers on a Great Dane and you will know why.

I do my roommates dogs nails because shes scared too. He is afraid of loud noises so a dremel wouldn't work I just use regular doggie nail clippers. At first he struggled a bit now he just lays there defeated if I grab him and I have the clippers. Then I just sit over him while he lays down so he couldn't go anywhere even if he changed his mind. I'd bite the nipping in the bud that's not normal if you need to muzzle em sounds like pup needs to learn who the boss is.
