and get 10 years probation.  No jail time.
http://crimeblog.dallasnews.com/2013/12/teen-sentenced-to-10-years-probation-in-drunken-driving-crash-that-killed-four-in-burleson.html/
16 year old kid, with a blood alcohol level 3 times the legal limit for an adult, kills 4 people and injures 11 others.  Judge, who is retiring at the end of this year, sentences the kid to 10 years probation.  The kid, Ethan Couch, comes from a very well to do family.

No worries, he will violate that parole within 6 months of getting out of rehab.  Hopefully he doesn't kill anyone else.

he and seven other teens piled into Couch’s red Ford F-350 and sped down Burleson- Retta Road, driving 70 mph in a 40 mph zone.

A little bit more than just "driving drunk."

One thing that has me baffled is, the parents basically paid a psychologist to testify that their bad parenting led to their son's reckless behavior.  How can that not come back to rape them in the subsequent civil suits that will follow?

4 deaths, 11 injuries one of which is a person who is a quadriplegic because of the "accident."  The truck the kid was driving was registered to the father's company.  There is no way a civil jury won't bend them over and shove the entire courthouse up their... well, I'm getting a bit graphic now.  But, this can't, and shouldn't, end well for the Couch family.

Short of murder or violent felonies, it's pretty rare for a juvenile to get prison time in my AO.  YMMV.

I hope the entire family ends up living in a cardboard box.  The chance of the kid making the first month of his probation period is pretty much zero.

I didn't know that being from a rich family was actually a viable defense

wfaa.com

Miller said Couch's parents gave him "freedoms no young person should have." He called Couch a product of "affluenza," where his family felt that wealth bought privilege and there was no rational link between behavior and consequences.

He said Couch got whatever he wanted. As an example,  Miller said Couch's parents gave no punishment after police ticketed the then-15-year-old when he was found in a parked pickup with a passed out, undressed, 14-year-old girl.

Miller also pointed out that Couch was allowed to drive at age 13. He said the teen was emotionally flat and needed years of therapy.

Seems like the family is going to get ripped a new one by the civil suits though, one kid is in a coma and there are other families too.

A civil suit from one of the families says that the truck belonged to the father's company.

link

The suit seeks up to $20 million in damages.

Molina’s medical bills have totaled more than $600,000 and may, should he require constant care, exceed $10 million, Berenson said.

Berenson’s suit alleges that the truck driven by Couch is owned by Cleburne Sheet Metal and that it was “entrusted” to him by his father, who is the president of that company.

As an inmate once told me when I worked in the jails, "Probation is just a set-up for failure." Its true. I have seen many inmates gladly take a few years of prison time instead of taking a lengthy probation time. This guy will violate his probation within 10 years.

Well, the kids did steal the beer from Wal-Mart, so I'd say that Wal-Mart has more responsibility in this than the parents.  If Wal-Mart would have just kept control of their beer, and actually stopped shoplifters instead of letting them go (company policy), then these hapless children might not have managed to become impaired.

Wow. About 25yrs ago, one of my cousins was 16-17 and killed one person while driving under the influence (think he was still under .08, but being underaged, so there's no leeway) he got 15yrs or so in prison. Was on probation for a good 5-6 years after that.

This was a Family Court apparently.

Top comment from the article:

Our daily 'hate the rich' story which ignores the fact that undocumented Democrats from south of the border are let out of jail for DUI manslaughter every single day after doing the exact same thing with no probation or even punishment.

Surely, there are people with the expertise to effect justice in circumstances such as these.   Perhaps, one or more of the victim's families will seek them out.  I would.
