American military aircraft will begin flying African and European peacekeepers into the Central African Republic, which is in the midst of a bloody internal war between various proclaimed Christian and Muslim militias and other rebel factions, a U.S. official tells CNN View Quote FFS, we're in the age of the internet, computers and advanced weapons. And yet, the USA is the only nation in the world with reliable force projection capabilities. How the hell did the Brits manage to land an Army in America to fight us 200+ years ago, but Europe can't do it today? |

It's because Europe knows how to play us and use us to their advantage.
"Hey US, we want to do some good, but we haz no airlift or naval assets to get our stuff there. Guess we won't be going then..." Hook, line, and sinker. |

...some serious shit brewing in the CAR- damn near every faction there is a proxy for a bigger interest.

The US has been doing this in Africa for quite some time. When I flew through Nairobi I saw an American transport getting ready to ferry troops over to Darfur.

I hope it's a growing trend. We've spent all the money on logistic capabilities, and our allies didn't. Let us do the hauling and someone else's kids do the trigger pulling for awhile.

You want heavy airlift its either the USAF or the Russian "Airlines". Take your pick. The Birts have a handful of C-17's. The French have nothing bigger than the Transall. The A-400M is years away from an in-service date.
Airlift is one of the things we do very very well. |

Unfortunately, we often seemed to be the enemy of the anti-communists and the friend of the communists on that continent; at least that is the impression our actions there give. I do believe a USAF Globemaster was hit by Katangese AA batteries during the airlift of UN troops into Elisabethville during the fight for the city in December of 1961. |
