Still employed?
Which series gun? I've been told that the Series 70 design can supposedly have the firing pin travel forward with the safety on which is why they made the Series 80. Seems like that, plus a soft primer, could have caused your ND. |
Glad you're ok. So what did everyone do when the heard the gunshot?

series 70 style with no firing pin block? of course its going to go off.
Thin primers and a heavy firing pin? Cheap ass gun? Why are you removing it from the holster?
Good luck keeping your job. |
Sorry for your loss.
My gun lives it's life IN my holster for this exact reason. |
Holy shit!!! I'm no expert but it certainly sounds like some sort of slam fire (wrong terminology) but a discharge caused by firing pin inertia from the fall. I hope everything goes ok from an employment perspective.

That safety looks like it is popped out of the frame (and for that reason not engaged).
Is that the case? |
Pretty sure the nighthawk is built like a series 70, so there is no firing pin lock.

I would count this as an AD.
Mechanical failure of the fire arm under normal conditions. You didn't have your booger hook on the bang button |
How's your hearing?
How's your feet? I'm wondering if there was any spall that might have hit them. Boss's reaction? Did you have to use the bathroom after it happened? Hope all is well OP. |

Sorry man. Force of fall on muzzle was enough to jolt firing pin into primer? Maybe it's time to give Glock a try? Just kidding, hope there's no consequences for you. View Quote This is the only thing I can think of. Does the pin rest on or close to the primer? Does the safety only block the trigger pull? No, I don't own a 1911. Never have. |
Hoping this doesn't cause your boss to change his mind about you carrying.
How many "attaboys" you think you'll need to make up for this? |
I still don't understand why you take your gun out of your holster to go to the bathroom.
I've never done that. |
By the way, the thumb safety on a 1911 isn't a safety really, it's a battery lock.

ok, reaction from office:
many people recognized it as a gun shot, many didn't, and some didn't hear it at all. some ran for the doors, others ran around (the two owners) to make sure everyone was ok, and most just sat in their desks without doing anything. the owners no I carry, and they actually were yelling for me and came looking for me, so that kinda made me feel good...they thought someone was shooting the place up and thought I would be there to help. when the thing went off I just sat there and thought "did that really happen"? little pieces of shrapnel are all over the bathroom, I have some little cuts on my right arm. |
It went off because you took it out of the holster and had it pointed at something you did not want to destroy. I carry concealed on a daily basis. Yes, it complicates dropping a deuce, but rules are rules. Leave the damned gun in its holster when you take a dump. Good on you for learning this painful lesson. Glad no one was (seriously) hurt.

You might want to later try:
Unload Disassemble Put safety back into frame properly Reassemble Get a hard plastic tip hammer Cock the hammer back, engage safety. Whack the nub of the safety on the opposite side of the frame. See if the hammer drops. |

Thought this was a flapping or a rendezvous that did not go well..
Glad all is well....sort of. |
If you have to take it off to crap, set it on the floor by your feet.
Don't set it anywhere that allows gravity to take over. |

Your day sucks man, sorry. maybe everyone will just laugh about it and move on. |

I'd be on the phone with Nighthawk.
A four foot fall causing a discharge with safety on? Sounds bad, even if it was a beat up Series 70.
Man, it's gonna suck trying to find a job in this market, good luck to ya.
PS: There is absolutely no good reason to take it out of the holster to take a dump. |
I know how you feel OP having had a ND myself
Just remember nobody was hurt and a lesson was learned so be thankful. I would be placing a call to Nighthawk shortly. |
I'd just put some bubble gum on the tile and blame the noise on last nights chili.

I still cant believe this happened. I work in a pretty decent sized 3 story office building, our company takes up most of the bottom floor. The two owners of the place I work both know I carry and fully endorse me doing so, they are glad that I do. I have been carrying for almost 12 or 13 years, pretty much every day. I carry a NHC 1911 in an M-tac holster. Flame me if you want, whatever, but this is what happened. I went into the bathroom, had to go "number 2". My routine here, that I have done hundreds of times, is take my 1911 out of my holster and put it into that plastic dealio that holds the "ass gaskets" that is attached to the stall wall. (those paper things you lay on the seat). I have done this countless times, and I even remember the first time I thought about putting it there...I was thinking how clever I was that I found a new "secure" place to put my gun when taking care of business. So today I go in for the routine.... I take gun out of holster, place in ass gasket holster, and this time the gun stays for a second and then drops right on through the bottom and lands muzzle first on the tile floor....I remember watching it start to fall thinking for a split second that I hope it doesn't ding my gun..... THEN BOOM!!!!!!!!!! This is the part the I DO NOT UNDERSTAND. How does the gun go off with the grip safety not engaged and the thumb safety on? You can see in the picks the thumb safety is STILL ON!! IT IS JAMMED BACK????? Anyway, call me stupid, whatever.....but this is what happened. ANY IDEAS ON HOW THE GUN COULD HAVE GONE OFF WITH THE GRIP SAFETY NOT ENGAGED AND THE THUMB SAFETY ON? the thumb safety is still on! http://f.cl.ly/items/083x0H1K3x2n1B1m3t3l/photo-5.png http://f.cl.ly/items/3x1p1c2q0s0J2F3c0q0e/photo-1.png http://f.cl.ly/items/2D3P36340L3F3M063D2d/photo-2.png http://f.cl.ly/items/0u1u3G2a2m2i0z1j3U3m/photo-3.png http://f.cl.ly/items/3N3x3p1R2o2O3C3A1q3E/photo-4.png http://f.cl.ly/items/083x0H1K3x2n1B1m3t3l/photo-5.png http://f.cl.ly/items/1L3106171Q140k22163Q/photo-6.png View Quote And people say the Series 80 FPS is a bad thing. |
The fall was in just the right direction to give the firing pin enough inertia to setoff a weak cupped primer?
This guy did a series of drop tests and dropped a series 70 1911 from 15 feet on the muzzle and was unable to get the gun to fire. If your firing pin spring is worn out or weak, that can change the results drastically I would imagine.
