Great pics, thanks for sharing them.

If you do decide to donate the pictures one place you may want to consider is Regis University's Center For The Study Of War Experience.  They have an extensive collection and treat the veterans very well; not what you would expect from a university.

Just as an aside, the Jeep appears to be a Ford built GPW.

And, does anyone know what the "S" following the Jeep's number signifies?

radio / ignition noise suppression kit is installed/equipped

its not part of the hood number

what makes you think it's a Ford?

outwardly, there are only a few ways to do so...
The Ford logo stamped on the left rear (early models)
crossmember under the radiator (Willys uses a tube (I know, I have a '44 MB)
looking at bolt heads/part numbers stamped into parts

you could also look at the engine block s/n
the easiest way is to look at the data placard

I have no way to know or prove that he was in recon, I am only going off what his daughter (our friend) has told me.    I know that he spoke very little about the war and none of his kids knew he was even in it until they found his photos.

he also had a collection of rifles, pistols, knives and medals that he brought back.    When he killed himself his wife gave them all to the police.

"what makes you think it's a Ford?"

In the second picture of the Jeep you can see the front cross member; it looks like an inverted "U" to me (Ford), not the bent tube Willys used.

Would the suppressed package mean it was a radio Jeep?

Now that's a helluva coincidence. Small f'in world.

"Uncle Bob" is Radar Operator Bob Cookson:

"Here is what we know of what happened next to the crew:

According to American internees in the Hobe Hyogo Ken POW camp #14, and W.O.Kuniyoshi Hasegawa, a ground crewman at a Japanese base, they saw a stream of light like a shooting star strike a B-29 that was illuminated by two search lights, and a moment later a fireball, when the "Tony" fighter plane of Capt. Junichi Ogata impacted Uncle Bob's plane.  Reports state that there were over 300 enemy fighter attacks against the B-29s on this raid.

No reports state, and it is not believed, that Capt. Ogata purposely rammed our uncle's plane.  Capt. Ogata was an excellent pilot, having downed eight American bombers in Burma, four more over Japan, and damaged five in his home defense air combat.

Capt. Ogata's fighter struck our uncle's plane on the right side just ahead of SSgt Holley's gun position and directly behind the right wing, severing the B-29 into two pieces. It appears the wings also separated from the fuselage.  The tail section of the plane fell to the ground relatively in tact with the bodies of Barry, Cookson, Cutler, Holley, and Wray huddled together when found about one-half mile East of the POW camp.  All were deceased.  We do not know whether they were killed instantly by the impact with the Ogata aircraft, or when the tail section crashed to the ground.

Fitzgerald, Copeland, Bond, and Brousek, were believed to be ejected by the force of the impact and explosion with the Ogata aircraft from the front pressurized compartment of the B-29, and were found separately on the ground.  All were deceased.

Navigator Lt. Nelson and Radio Operator SSgt Augunas, who sat across from each other in the rear of the forward pressurized compartment, were somehow thrown clear of their aircraft after the impact, and parachuted to the ground.  They were quickly captured and imprisoned until 18 July 1945.  On that date, in a two hour farce the Japanese called a "trial" they were convicted of "war crimes" and murdered by the Japanese.  The Japanese claimed that Nelson and Augunas were not POWs, but war criminals, because according to the Japanese representatives they had carried out indiscriminate bombings against Japanese civilians.

That is what we know of Uncle Bob and his crew mates on "Mission to Albuquerque".

We will not try to speculate on what may have been.  Or why this happened.  We can only continue to honor them for a job well done.  They deserve more..."

I should have time tomorrow to scan a few more in.   I found a stack of 8x10 glossy prints, all of which have text written on the back that almost seem as official army notes, I'll scan those as well.

I know for a fact that some of the 8x10s were not taken by the father of my friend, but they are somber to look at none the less

Mosquito?  At first I was thinking an A-20 Havoc, but looking at the body from the front, it doesn't look like the right shape.

Ciraxis,  has his family sent away for his service records from the National Personnel Records Center?  The fire in 1973 destroyed 80% of Army records pre-1960, but his might have been one of the lucky ones that survived.  That would help them know more about when, where, and in what units he served with.

What strikes me about WWII and and WWI is how young, for the most part, the men look, despite being men who had seen the hell of combat. Compared to Korea until now those guys look much younger. Guess it was a different time?

Here are the 8x10s that were with his negatives.    I do not believe that he took these photos, in fact I know he didn't take a few of them.   One of these is a very famous photo, the author elie wiesel is in the one photo of the bunks at Buchenwald.

I've also scanned the text that was on the back of each photo.   The text will follow each photo.   Some of these are Graphic   You should be able to click on or open each in a new tab/window to view larger.

It's kind of hard to imagine the sense of absolute desolation these people must have felt as their defeat became more and more real. They also must have expected to be punished pretty severely, to commit suicide like that.

Germany was a completely exhausted, defeated nation by the end of the war.
