Looks like good clean fun. With occasional broken bones, of course.

How do they not die? No edge on the blades and medieval armor absorbs blunt impacts pretty well. Still... The last time this was posted a few months ago (different video, same folks) there were a few shots of some of the competitors after a match. About what you'd expect, huge bruises, one guy with a good-sized cut to the forehead that was bleeding quite freely, mention of a guy losing a finger at the championship bout last year. They're in the process of starting up a league here in the US. If armor wasn't so damned expensive I'd sign up in a heartbeat. |

Reading the title, I thought I was about to see some Eastern Euro live action role playing dorks. That was different.

Uhh, wow.
Went in wondering how much was pulled or scripted. Not wondering now. That's pretty fucking badass. It's a window into medieval combat. |

So do they just beat the hell out of each other until someone gives up or is unconscious?

Same guys aren't in the front of a scrum doing that for four hours, or forty minutes in a row for that matter. |

I posted about the international meets recently, Battle of the Nations:
http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1529681_Battle_Of_The_Nations___Have_At_You_.html Here is Team USA's website, pretty badass vid too: http://usaknights.org/ The Russians really kick ass at the sport. They really love their halberds, too, and know how to use them. Opponents go down like they'd been, well, poleaxed. I hope this does become very popular.
After Obama manages to find a way to deprive us of our ammo if not our guns, then at least we will still be able to fight using more primitive, more brutal methods. |

Knights would not throw themselves into a melee like these people do. There is no real threat of death so the players are more emboldened and less hesitant. Plus you cannot keep this level of combat up for hours upon hours. In real life soldiers on the line rotated out after several MINUTES of fighting for rest. For instance a if a Roman line was ten soldiers deep the front line soldiers would fight for 6 minutes and rest for 54 minutes unless they died. This is a cool spot and looks like is brutal and results in some serious injuries. Also normal soldiers in medieval times did not have full armor like these guys have. |

Love the sparks. Note to self: keep your shield the hell up if you like having a face, unless you're busy using it to smash the other guy in the face.

Most likely "Counted Blows" combat, it's a practice they actually used in Medieval Tournaments.
You land so many hard shots to your opponents head, arms, body etcetera to win, another is to fight until your opponent submits and admits defeat or falls. |

The best part of the whole thing is the tripping. I garun-fucking-tee you, it's the new guys charging across the fighting area and leave themselves open to being tripped like that.

That's a bruiser sport, indeed. The guys I know who play it are the rugby, brawler types.
Since actual combat with such equipment involved attempts to pierce into and under armor and, well, kill people, I'm not sure how much that actually reflected reality. But, yeah, it looks like good TV. Not exactly the "lightning bolt, lightning bolt" crowd. Though, ironically most of both tie into the SCA in the States. |
