Getting employers involved wasn't the idea, it grew out if the FDR price and wage controls of the New Deal.  Still, getting the federal government involved is an extra shitty idea.

We are getting ripped off by the current system.    I know a lot of you are in the public sector have all med cost paid for by the Fed and support the current ways.    The private sector is getting killed by healthcare cost in this country.   American corporations have to compete worldwide.    If you have to pay $7000 per employee health benefit, your competitor in ...say Belgium pays $2000.   You are not going to compete.  like what happened to GM.

We have the worst form of socialized medicine today.    Gov't pays 60%+ all costs to what the providers demand.   Obamacare could turn the table in time for gov't to dictate pricing.        Bad for the doctors, HMO executives.

Last I checked.  There are still lots of doctors around in Europe.       An American can go to country like Belgium get first rate surgery for $20k out of pocket.
The same surgery could cost $70k here.     You can not explain this away with liabilities or burden of uninsured people.      The current system doesn't work.   Adopting the European system  could  be vast improvement.

Half the people who have insurance in this country are either public employees or employees of corporations getting big fat checks from the government.    This is edging out the private sector.  Corporations like Apple, Microsoft can afford the best healthcare for their employees.    Unionized workers can force their employer to pay.        Small companies, self employed folks  , the other half of the country are left to fend for themselves.   Paying for healthcare at greatly inflated price or not having it.   And we are the tax payers that  paid for the public sectors healthcare bill.

I already explained my public leech statement in another thread so I will not bring it up here.

Good news in disguise.   The healthcare system is broken.    Cost of care is triple what it should cost in free market.      You can buy the same surgery in Europe for 1/3 the cost here.   Out of pocket Americans are flying there to buy treatment.

Once we get majority of Americans on one public payer system we can dictate those doctors, hospitals, HMOs and layers on prices.      IBM just fired the first shot.   Every corporation in America will do the same.
So you're in favor of this?

A lot of bitching on Obamacare  came from people who are actually enjoying public paid healthcare.    I paid for your healthcare, I paid my own healthcare.    Those of you whose healthcare I paid for have no ground to stand on.

QFT. Everyone will be forced into the single payer system that they want. Except the really wealth or connected who will simply ignore and litigate the problem or leave the USA all together.

Next will be to drive private insurance companies out of business.

BTW IBM is leaving the USA. They see what is going on and they are leaving. There will be no announcement. They will just be gone.

Its not like they have a huge presence state side anyway.

From the analyst reports I've read, IBM was almost 50% US when I started (late 2007), and it's dropped to about 10% now. That was a combination of big layoffs in the US and more than doubling the non-US workforce though.

Let me chime in here.  I worked for that POS company for 8 years.  Now, back in the day, the old timers said it was a great place to work.  After Bush got in, he opened the doors to the H1B visas and the rest is history.  Their plan, the "roadkill to 2015" is to get rid of 80% or American workers.  Move, offshore, all the work overseas to cheap labor.  It's not the company it used to be.  It's driven by greedy executives making millions and screw the common worker.  If you want so see what IBM is doing to the American worker go to:

http://www.endicottalliance.org/

I'm glad I've been out of that shithole for the past 6 years.

IBM has going downhill for awhile.. not sure when but they used to be BIG.. like in the 90's... they may have some good years in between but I think overall they are dying.. thus this move doesn't come as a surprise.

Healthcare has issues.... they need to limit the BS lawsuits, limit the ridiculous charges for meds/etc.. the problem is uninsured people.

My father had heart attack surgery they billed him $100,000 and eventually accepted around $35,000 apparently they over charge due to people who don't have insurance... so people who work and pay for stuff end up paying for those who don't.. same concept as any store and theft.. do you think the thieves pay for the losses?

Doctor's make mistakes.. but that doesn't mean that you deserve $25 million when in reality you wouldn't earn that much money in 30 years of working for a living!
30 years @ $50,000 per year = $1.5 Million minus taxes why does anyone deserve a crazy ass settlement.. it depends on what happens but worst case scenario someone is killed by the doctor's mistake.. they shouldn't get more than $5 million and they should ELIMINATE the entire BS in between.. lawyers/hospital/court/etc

I'm in favor of Government controlled Health-care... not saying obamacare.. not saying 'our' government.. as it's pretty obvious that they don't know how to run a business. I'm also in favor of overhaulin' the Government/System

I'm also in favor of you get what you earned.. you work for 30 years and are promised things and don't get them.. pretty damn shitty.. you get pay cuts/higher insurance copays and some CEO gets a $15 million bonus

the system is broken

Pretty much.  A couple years back I cashed out just about everything I had and bought pretty much the closest thing to a recession-proof business in existence.  It's not physically demanding... I can run this store when I'm 80 if I have to (I sure as hell don't want to), and it's stocked full of tangible, portable goods for which there's always going to be a demand.

Honestly, I was just at the right place at the right time... but I sure do look smart now.

I was shocked at our shareholders meeting this year.  The board of directors voted on a proposal to significantly INCREASE the level of healthcare coverage provided by the company to all employees and their dependents.  I was happy to be able to vote Aye.

Basically, our new position is that the coming boning that the average American is going to take on healthcare is a perfect opportunity for us to attract and keep talent, as well as build more loyalty from existing employees.

I was waiting all week for the "Impact of ACA" portion to see what and who we were cutting... What a pleasant surprise.

What percentage of today's service men and women actually see combat ?   Most are desk jockeys, supply and support, do they deserve the same benefits ?

Just more public leeches.

Good news in disguise.    No it isn't.  The healthcare system is broken.    Yes, it is.  Cost of care is triple what it should cost in free market.       Perhaps. You can buy the same surgery in Europe for 1/3 the cost here.   Out of pocket Americans are flying there to buy treatment.
Once we get majority of Americans on one public payer system we can dictate those doctors, hospitals, HMOs and layers on prices.  See comments below.   IBM just fired the first shot.   Every corporation in America will do the same.  In a short time, most probably will.

The feds can dictate to private enterprise but it won't work for very long.  The new system may work for a while, but as time goes on, the quality of care will change.  Forget about the best & brightest signing up.   Yes, there will probably still be doctors and nurses in 15 years, and maybe more than we have now.   But why will brilliant men and women sign up for indentured servitude when there are other far better options for them to pursue?

I'm astounded that people can't grasp this.  (Lots of "freedom loving" ARFCOM folks, too. )

I think that is absolutely horrible. If someone has served, that person and their spouse should have TRICARE until they die. They earned it. Why is that such a hard concept??

OP, we retired military people are not far behind.   They will take our TRICARE health insurance within the the next two or three years and force us into OBAMACARE.

Is anyone on this board so naive that they don't think the plan is to force EVERYONE into OBAMACARE before the marxist-socialist motherfuckers are done?

So plan your retirement all you want, your government is going to fuck you.

I think that is absolutely horrible. If someone has served, that person and their spouse should have TRICARE until they die. They earned it. Why is that such a hard concept??

And on the private sector side, I remember all the outrage at huge bonuses for executives who were directly responsible for the 'too big to fail' fiasco, and I especially remember all the defenders here who pointed out that 'those bonuses are contracts.'  Pensions are contracts too.  And this Tricare (I'm not .mil so I don't know what it is) is a contract, right?

We live in a world where 'contracts' more and more mean nothing.  Used to be a handshake was enough.  Now you need enough money to afford a really good team of lawyers.

Anyone that believes this is a moron. the only thing that accomplishes is the quality of the service, goods, and the frequency,  will decrease. what do you do for a living? how about "we" get to dictate how much you are paid for everything you do? how motivated are you to produce or even do that job when you have no control over what you are paid?
