I say it's time to start a new MOA challenge thread. No carryover entries, all targets must be shot after the new challenge starts. This thread is getting a little old and long. It's time for Old Painless to re-shoot some of his other guns! |

Then I saw last page that you didn't get your way and are whining. I actually agree with you. A fresh contest would be good but not because it is getting long and old. If you were a team member you would be able to easily index where you read last. You don't have any skin in the game. You don't have to deal with trying to put it together or keep track of what has been done. In terms of a reset I actually agree with you. I don't even own either of the guns I hold top slots with or the gap gun that I have second in the bolt gun section. I do have some new guns that I haven't bothered to shoot this challenge with because I have seen too much splitting hairs. I like that OP is shooting stuff in open class and thought about shooting my 6.5 gap gun as open just so I didn't have to worry that I was burning ammo on a paper hole contest just to be told it was no good. I load my own but it still costs money. Im improving the sights on my ruger 10/22 and am hoping to be practicing with it a good bit even though it will be with cheap ammo so maybe everytime I go out I will shoot 5x5 just to see how it is coming along. If there is a reset I think the results should have the page number or post number if that is even a thing. So if OP shoots some exotic cool thing and it is super accurate I can go straight to that post or page or what ever to see the pictures and details. |

So if OP shoots some exotic cool thing and it is super accurate I can go straight to that post or page or what ever to see the pictures and details. I think the thing should be left alone. Anyone who wants to can shoot the open class and that can be encouraged. The point of the original thread and this carryover was to demonstrate ability to shoot in the absence of a strict benchrest setup. I agree the rules can be confusing, but really, only for those who are crowding the edge. I mean, look at most setups and they are pretty close to open anyhow. So, with an open class ready to receive any and all, let's just keep it going. For myself, I started the "SHTF" NON-MOA Challenge because I really couldn't care less about bench and fully supported shooting positions simply because I am primarily a field shooter and burn lots of powder on varmints and game. Bench skills do not necessarily translate into field shooting skills and they are really rather two different disciplines. I shot the 1 MOA Challenge just for kicks, but used a field setup {rucksack} to do it. I don't get the whining at all, especially after now monitoring my own. THANKS akethan for your work here!! |

To EVR: You mentioned the original thread and this carryover. If I remember right, there have been 4 MOA challenge threads over the years (can anyone remember?). Moving forward I would think a new one every year would be reasonable, unless there is very little participation over the year. Also. the MOA challenge is not really close to benchrest, F-class or fully supported shooting. To Torf: I do need to get a membership. If I can remember the password to my original user ID from way back before the site format changed I will renew it. Otherwise, I'm stuck with this one. To Nick F: I agree that results should somehow reference the original post they were submitted in so we could easily check out ones we are interested in. Currently, it's often not possible. |

That's what I did w/ the NON-MOA SHTF Challenge. It hasn't got quite the # of shooters entered but then I didn't figure it would since most American {at least} shooters don't seem to spend much time disconnected from shooting furniture. Many don't have a place where they can even shoot from anything but a bench. So be it. I don't care much for bench shooting as I stated as it bears little relation to the conditions of most practical shooting I and many others encounter but I'll be happy to SHOOT your new Challenge if you cook one up. Tho I might add some additional "Challenge" to the Challenge! So if you want to set up a thread and require concrete benches or bipods or Caldwell Lead Sleds, have at it. If I have the crutches I'll use them. And hold to the rules as best I can, and many others will, too. And if I get denied entry for violation of the rules, so what. I guess I'll have to obey them! Check out the Handgun Challenge, too. I'll shoot anything any time. Other day I challenged my son to a one shot ONE HANDED "duel" on a 12x8 steel plate at 100 meters using a Mosin Nagant 91/30. I hit it and was puffing msyself up when he picked up the Mosin and hit it....then grabbed my SIL's 6.5 Arisaka and hit it again with that! LOL. |

I like this thread the way it is. The only real arguing I've seen is when guys make claims and then only post a single 3 shot group instead of following the rules. The other argument has been over the size of the rear bag allowed...lol.
It's nice to shoot for the top spot, but in reality it's all for fun. I enjoy using this thread to call out the "experts" making recommendations to others that are more than a little Then when your opinion differs from theirs they make claims like my dpms shoots dime size groups at 200 yards with xm855 ammo. Generally after you call them on it they disappear never to be heard from again. |

Hi all. Been wanting to shoot this challenge for a very long while since I saw Old Painless first talk about it on the Box of Truth, and seeing that the BoT forums just popped back to life has prompted me to go out and get on with it.
Shot from the bench at 100 yards with a 5.56 AR15, home built around a Rock River A4 Varmint 24" upper. Atlas bipod up front, balled left fist underneath the stock at the rear. The scope is one of my favorites these days - a Leupold Mark AR Mod 1 4-12x40 that has sat on a couple of my rifles. It's now found a permanent home on this beastie, since my carbine wears an EOTech as of a few weeks ago. Ammunition was a couple boxes of Federal Gold Medal .223 Remington, with the lovely 69 grain Sierra Matchking boat-tailed hollow point. I'm not entirely sure whether this counts as a formal attempt, since I forgot to take a photo of the target setup exactly. I did snag a shot through the scope from the firing position, but if that doesn't count then please let me know and I'll go out and shoot the same rifle again another weekend. I throw myself upon the mercy of the judges. The setup: http://i.imgur.com/qVoSnxyl.jpg My view of the target at the 100 yard line: http://i.imgur.com/AdWKNmMl.jpg?1 The results: http://i.imgur.com/lSHdBHNl.jpg Best group with calipers: http://i.imgur.com/IUfiAjGl.jpg Worst group with calipers, because why not: http://i.imgur.com/5NzgY6jl.jpg?1 That middle group was a doozy. The wind died, and everything just flowed right. Best group I ever shot with any rifle, period. One day I hope to get good enough that they'll all be like that. I fudged the math when I wrote the results out in pen there, as you can see, because I forgot that the round is actually .224 inches across, not .223. The figures below are correct, and take this difference into account. SPR Division, Rowlock: AR15, Rock River 24", 5.56 NATO. Leupold Mark AR MOD 1 4-12x40mm. Federal Gold Medal .223 Remington 69 grain BTHP. Groups: 0.6175" / 0.9050" / 0.3185" / 0.6170" / 0.8873" = avg. 0.6691" = 0.639 MOA |

I went through some prvi 75grain that wasn't able to shoot near as well on my noveske recon but shot well in my other 16 inch guns. I have found that hornady has always treated me very well as well as the normal loads. I love norma because it is a great round then you get the brass to shoot later. Apparently this guy (FJ60, a 14er) has a 1911 and AR that can shoot a one hole group at 25 yards. I gave him a link to this thread, so hopefully he will post some results. I'm eager to see this incredible 1911 and AR.

My 18-inch AR likes the M193 that I have somewhat better than this rifle does, if anything. I'm sure there are guns out there for which it is an excellent match. I guess my point was mostly that, contrary to what some people just keep on saying, a great shooting rifle isn't necessarily gonna shoot great with every cheap old ammo you chuck at it. Honestly, I was a little surprised at just how wide those groups were at first, but now that I look at it, at least two of them are legitimately less than 2MOA, and with the right eyes a charitable observer might call one of them sub-MOA with a flier. Unfortunately when it comes to my own shooting, I'm not usually a very charitable observer. The 24" RRA upper on this one seems to quite like Lake City's 62 grain XM855 green-tip stuff, for example. Might give that a try next time if I remember to bring it with me. It's would be really nice if I could find something in that price range that shot at least acceptably well for something beyond plinking at pie plates. |

What twist rate and type of barrel you using? I really like the red box 77s. When I said 100 I meant 2 boxes of 50 at two different grain count that makes sense for your barrel. I'd you have a 1/9 77s doesn't make much sense in the same way some 1/7 don't sing with 50 and below stuff. Get 100 rounds dont mess around with them and fire the comp 4 times slowly.

Going to try this out in the morning with my mid-range F-TR rifle. It's a .223 Savage with McGowen barrel. I usually use a Sinclair bipod and a rabbit eared rear bag, but I'll take the harris bipod and hard hold for this.

Tomorrow I put my new 16" Predatar with in-house made match barrel up against the almighty Stealth.

Tomorrow I put my new 16" Predatar with in-house made match barrel up against the almighty Stealth. View Quote Ended up shooting the Pred with a T-1 so no group comparisons. Maybe next week I'll throw a scope on it and see what they both can really do side by side. Was getting excellent results with the Pred. I think it could be a real winner. Sadly I forgot my reloads at home as the girlfriend was rushing me. So I could only shoot the Stealth with 75gr Hornady Tap, 77gr Norma SMK, and 75gr Hornady Superformance Match. No special groups, all were .5 moa at 100 yards. The rifles were not fond of the Superformance match at all. The Norma was excellent. I've had great luck with their 175gr SMK loading in my Rem700 AAC as well. Haven't been able to find more of that locally. Have the Rainier Tent sale next weekend, but if I can find time I'll hit the range again with the Larue rifles to see what they really do side by side. |

Pretty funny. lol...ya I would argue that 0.5" groups from an AR15 based rifle using off the shelf ammo is pretty special. |

Good shooting but those rests are not allowed. I can move the Mos to ULT

Rules be the rules I did not make them.
THE POINT IS TO SEE HOW GOOD YOU SHOOT, NOT HOW WELL YOU CAN MOUNT IT IN A MACHINE. 5. OK TO USE sandbag, rest, ruck, bipod, rock with a hat, sling etc. on forearm of the rifle. **Will be OK to use a small rear sandbag (ie: sand sock or squeeze bag) or bean bag no bigger then a softball that must require constant hand pressure to maintain hold on target. IE. Can NOT sandbag gun inplace. Shooter must maintain positive control of rifle. |

A real sandbag would have been far more solid anyway. If a sandbag full of sawdust is not okay can you define a "rest". http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1518887___ARFCOM_1_MOA_ALL_DAY_LONG__Challenge_.html&page=4 I used that same bag on page 4. I just added in the softball sized rear squeeze bag. Feel free to remove that post from the results list. |

Just a tag and bump. I have been testing various .22 ammo per this thread and have came very close to getting in. I still have some other stuff to test so hopefully I can get it at some point.
These were shot at 100 yds. This is the best target I have gotten yet out of the ammo I have tested. Remington Club Xtra by Eley. If it weren't for that 2.25" group in the bottom right it would be within MOA. As it sits, it is 1.28" @ 100 yds. I don't even want on the list I'm just sharing. But be on the lookout, cause once I break that MOA I will take my spot on the list. |

I have no right to call someone out when I haven't posted my shooting skills but here is another one:
http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_5/429318_Best_cheapest__223_bolt_gun_for_suppressor_.html&page=1#i4102272 Maybe I missed it but have there been any Savage shooters with 223s posting in here yet? I am going to put some reloads together and get to the range this week. |

Plenty of Savage .308 on the list as well. |
