1 MOA ALL DAY LONG

Alright guys and girls, to time hit the range again. I'm bringing back this thread with primarily the same rules as last year. BillyDoubleU put a lot of work into putting this contest together and did a great job, so I'm re-using his post. The only changes this year are the unlimited class and the "Wall of Claim: A Call-out List."

This is the Official “How Good Are You” thread of AR15.com

What is it? It’s a challenge to all to prove how good you really are with a rifle! Not sometimes but consistently.

Keep it simple 5 shot groups, 5 groups per target

1 MOA = 100 Yards = 1.047"
––––––––-50 Yards = 0.5235"
––––––––-25 Yards = 0.26175"


Top 25 for each division

Separate list of 1 MOA shooters and a separate list for .5 MOA shooters.

REMEMBER this, all 5 groups of 5 shots must AVERAGE 1 MOA to make the list and claim the title of being a 1 MOA shooter.

Doing one .99" group and four 1.5" groups does not equal a 1 MOA shooter, it means you got lucky once and you are a 1.398 MOA shooter (assuming a 100 yard target)

This is a challenge but don't be afraid to try it out and post, every possible rifle style has been listed with a category and a distance. It's all in good fun and to be honest about your abilities.

With that in mind here are the rules.

1. ONE sheet of paper, 8.5”x11” preferred and it MUST HAVE ALL 5 targets.

Meaning 1 sheet of paper with FIVE targets. NO INDIVIDUAL TARGETS. THEY WILL NOT COUNT.


2. On that 1 sheet of paper with 5 targets you shoot 5 groups of 5 shots each. (In one day)


3. Each group is measured OUTSIDE GREASE RING TO OUTSIDE GREASE RING with calipers (preferred) or tape rule in inches. Then subtract the diameter of one bullet IE if your shooting a .223 and your 5 shot group measures 1.13" you will subtract 0.224" to get a group of 0.906". If you are shooting a .22lr you will subtract 0.223", for a 308 you will subtract 0.308" (Remember- the more precise your measurement the better)

Some common measurements:
.172" - .17 HMR
.223" - .22 Short, Long, Long Rifle
.224" - .223 Remington, .22 WMR, .22 Hornet
.243" - .243 Winchester
.284" - 7mm-08 Remington, 7mm Mag
.308" - .308 Winchester, .30-06, .300 Mag
.311" - 7.62x39 Soviet, .303 British
.338" - .338 Mag


4. NO MECHANICAL REST/SLED, NO VICE OR SIMILAR DEVICE THAT SUPPORTS THE ENITRE RIFLE, NO SHOOTING JACKETS, NO STRAPPING THE GUN INTO ANYTHING, NO LARGE REAR SANDBAG ** OR REST. SHOOTER MUST HAVE POSITIVE CONTROL OF RIFLE.

THE POINT IS TO SEE HOW GOOD YOU SHOOT, NOT HOW WELL YOU CAN MOUNT IT IN A MACHINE.


5. OK TO USE sandbag, rest, ruck, bipod, rock with a hat, sling etc. on forearm of the rifle.

**Will be OK to use a small rear sandbag (ie: sand sock or squeeze bag) or bean bag no bigger then a softball that must require constant hand pressure to maintain hold on target.

IE. Can NOT sandbag gun inplace. Shooter must maintain positive control of rifle.


6. Shooting position is up to you, sitting, standing, prone.


7. Posting:

1st picture of target set at the range you are shooting. If you are shooting more than one rifle at the same range using the same pic is okay.

2nd picture with 5 groups of 5 shots each, next to them write down group size.

3rd picture with calipers (or tape rule) left in place over BEST group.

4th picture of rifle and shooting setup (ie. Sandbag, prone and so on). Post all4 pics and also type in the post your 5 group sizes and what the average is. IE. .99”, 1.5”, 1.5”, 1.5”, 1.5” add them up, equals 6.99” and divide by five. So 6.99/5 = 1.398”

You can use the MOA formula, either way I will check the math and post the MOA on the result list.

Also type up specs of your rifle and ammo IE. Rem 700 with 168gr Federal SMK or Colt AR15 18" with Wolf 55gr FMJ or AK with 125gr Hand Loads PLEASE INCLUDE AMMO USED

Division you wish to be listed under with range, User_Name: Rifle Manufacturer and caliber - notable customizations- Scope- Ammo. Groups: 1"/2"/3"/4"/5" = avg. 3" = .287 MOA


If you do not post in this format or leave anything out your post will not be included.  


8. In each division you can only have your name up once per gun. Meaning that if you shoot the Iron Sight 22lr with your 10/22 and average a 1.65” group and lets say place 4th. If you use that same gun and do worse, even if you would place better then someone else it will not count for your group. Best group counts.

Now if you then shoot Iron Sight 22lr with your M&P 15-22 and shoot better, say 1.25” average groups and place 2nd. Both that score and the 10/22 score will remain. Different guns will be allowed for different group rankings within a division. Best group counts.

This also goes for the 1 MOA list. Meaning only your best MOA will be ranked on the 1 MOA list BUT if you also shoot 1 MOA or less with a different rifle, that will also count and your name will be added to the list for each different rifle you shoot 1 MOA or less with.

9. Remember, this is NOT a Bullseye challenge, it's a Groups challenge.

10. Any and all ammo is fine I don't care if you use Factory loads or your super secret Hand Load that Moses gave you.

11. Ties in average will go to the shooter with the smallest group.

Service Division (AR/AK/FAL/M1A1 etc style weapons)

Non-Magnified Optic at 50 yards

SPR Division (AR/AK/FAL/M1A etc WITH magnified optics) **See rule 5
100 yards

Bolt Division with magnified optics (any precision gun) ** See rule 5

And for cheapness a 22lr Division

Any 22lr rifle with iron sights at 25 yards

Any 22lr rifle with non-magnified optic at 50 yards

Any 22lr rifle with magnified optic at 50 yards

Any 22lr rifle with magnified optic at 100 yards

Misc Small Bore Division
Any .17HMR/.17HM2/.17Fireball/.22WMR/.22 Hornet etc etc etc with any sighting system (Irons/nonmagnified/magnified) at 100 yards **See Rule 5


Unlimited Division
Catch-all class for anyone wishing to use a lead-sled, large sandbag set-up, or other assisting device prohibited from the other classes. 50yd minimum for non magnified optic rifles and 100 yd minimum for magnified optics of all calibers. Does not qualify you for MOA shooter list, but will be recognized as an MOA rifle owner. Further more if you have shot the same setup and are listed in a class you will not be eligible for unlimited. Let's not turn this into a full blown bench rest shoot.

This post will serve as the place to call out anyone who publicly posts unsubstantiated claims of beyond MOA accuracy on AR15.com. If you attack someone's accuracy in a thread, say something along the lines of "I could do better than that with...." or "That group sucks", when it is a .5MOA group; or swear that you have a <.5 MOA off-the-shelf hunting rifle, this is where you prove it. If you post pictures in the original thread along with your claim, you won't be added.

If someone sees an accuracy claim made that qualifies a poster for this list, send me the user name, link to the thread, and the post number where the claim was made. If the post meets the requirements, the candidate and their claim will be added to the list.

If you happen to find yourself on this list, you can easily be removed by participating in the challenge, whether you prove your original claim or not.

From the other thread.  Done this afternoon.  Bipod only.  No rear rest, bag, sock or anything else but my hand.  The .308 target is questionable as pointed out by nick in the other thread, so that gun is DQ'd from the competition.   .223 is all good though, and my official entry into the SPR magnified optic at 100 yards.

"I finally got off my lazy butt to do this thing.   It was so hot and humid (my scope lens fogged up when I took the gun out of the case.   )   Of course, I probably could have done better under better conditions.   Took about 10 minutes to do each run.  Showed up with two (2) ARFCOM MOA All Day targets and 25 rounds for each gun to choot 'em with.

First Gun --

.223 AR-15.  22" SS bull bbl.  Geissele G2S trigger.   Zeiss Victory FL 6-24x56mm.  53 gr. SMK (#1400) over 27.2 gr. of Varget.





1.146, 0.596, 0.926, 1.256, 0.936.  Avg = 0.972"  or 0.928 MOA

I just built the gun last week and it was the first time out with it.

.308  RRA LAR-8.  20" heavy bbl.  Nightforce NXS 3.5-15x56mm.  150 gr. SGK Spitzer BT (#2125) over 44.5 gr. of RE-15; and 44.5 gr. Varget (I ran out of RE-15.)





1.162, 1.292, 1.932, 0.922, 1.953.  Avg = 1.45" or 1.38 MOA

A little dissapointed in my performance there.  I really pulled a few shots.  But that's how the cookie crumbled.

First time with privi partisan 69 grn open tip match . Had a case rupture.  Felt bits of powder on forehead and cheeks. Smoke wafted out of magaxine and charging handle area for quite a while.

Also... orange stickers and red dots are not a good mix .

Great I have 400 rounds of PPU 69gr  sitting here.

So an M&P 15-22 with Aimpoint = Non magnified optics correct? It shot pretty good at 30yds, maybe with a backpack for support I could get it to shoot well enough. Problem is the size of the dot itself. And the Wyoming wind.

And for clarification, if we shoot the same gun/class, get better groups then what we originally got on the list with, it doesn't count as a new score correct.

I also had one jam (hand feeding into open chamber /empty mag then pushing bolt release) and the bullet was pushed into case. I did not use that one.

What he means is the 1 moa shooters are the pen class that doesnt fall into the rules for the other classes.  Using a lead sled or something along the lines disqualifies you to shoot the other class's

Yes higher scores with same gun will replace lower scores with same gun.

The only way to have two scores within the same class is to use two different guns.

If you post a new score with the same rifle I will erase the old and add the new.

If you guys could use this format it really helps me out.

He isn't saying it's impossible.  He is saying that the title 1moa rifle owner goes to people who demonstrated they have a rifle capable of that, but did it with equipment that made the skill of the actual shooter have less of an effect on the result.

SInce you did it without using any special equipment, in this "contest" you don't get the 1moa rifle owner title.  That's actually a good thing.. it means you shot 1moa or less without using any special equipment that is outside the rules.  You did it with more shooting skill and not because of using special equipment (sleds and such).

It's basically the difference between just owning a 1moa rifle, and being a 1moa shooter without using sleds and all that.

Well, I decided to do this today, printed out targets, got my rifle and ammo together.  Looked up a good spot for 100 yds on Google Earth, loaded up the suburban and headed out to the desert.  Got out there, confirmed the distance with a tape measure, and went to get set up.

FORGOT THE DARN TARGETS ON MY DESK.  DANGIT.

I still had some sight-in targets stapled to the backer from when I was sighting in my AR-15 last week.  So, I picked aiming points and just used them.  I hope that's OK.  If I need to go do it again to qualify, I will.

Shooting position.  Rifle is a Savage 93R-17F with a Centerpoint (CHEAP!) 3-9x32.  I have a Rifle Basix trigger installed, set at about 4oz.



The 'range'.  I was shooting from the top right to the bottom left.



Target.  All the other unmarked holes in the target are .223.  There are only 25 17HMR shots on target.

Group calculation was done using OnTarget.

ETA:  Just to confirm that OnTarget was working, I put a caliper on one of the groups.  It's dead on.




I'm going to try this again, I think.  I noticed my groups getting smaller as they went.  And I know why.  I walked out through a bunch of sand to check the prior target and then walked back.  The first group the scope was really 'bouncing' with my heartbeat.  By the last, my heart had settled down a bit.

Nothing is wrong with box.net, but one of the three targets is hosted at pdfcast instead of box.net, and that site sucks.

 

OK.  I couldn't take it.  

My shooting spot is only 15 minutes from the house, so I had to go back. Cleaned the barrel ( which hasn't been done in 500 rds or so) and gave myself time to settle after placing the target.  Results are MUCH better.  If not for that one flyer (I called it, too.  Jerked the trigger) I could have been awful close to 1/2 MOA.

Still the same rifle and distance.  17HMR at 100yds.

I also decided to try out my AR-15.  Groups are nothing to brag about.  My eyes are getting too damn old for irons.  And not even real irons, but Magpul MBUS.    I think I'll try this again.  The diamonds were just really hard for me to center on.  The target was in the shade and I was in the sun.  You can see where my middle diamond group was pretty good.  I had 'reference' points.  Maybe a little brighter diamond (red or orange) would help.

I did a test yesterday with my scoped 10/22.  

I felt like a rich man burning up crappy bulk Winchester 525 rd packs of 36 grain hivelocity hps (had never shot them before... they shot a bit high at 50 yards, but were pretty darn accurate for bulk rounds).

So I shot the 5 groups at 50 yards, then moved to 100.

I don't have the results right in front of me, but they were very similar.  I had always wondered if 50 would equate to 100.  It was pretty close.  I rushed a bit at 100, and used bigger aiming stickers, so I think it is virtually the same MOA.


( results similar, meaning the calculated MOA at 50 & extrapolated to 100 was similar to the actual results at 100)

You're killing me with that 10/22. I'm going to be disgusted with myself if I can't eventually get my Anschutz to shoot that good. I've tried several types of ammo in it now, and this Remington/Eley EPS stuff is the most consistent, but I still get a flyer now and then. Maybe the flyer is me though. I have noticed that all the best scores on here were done with Wolf Match, and I just can't find any of that stuff to try.

 

I think are right.  On the leather bag and the fact that if the rifle is really an MOA gun you will be able to repeat at the same general point.  Wind shooter error and flaws in the ammo may change things but you should have a tight group which shows where everything is singing and doing what it should be doing.  A normal grouping where you are doing your part and a loose or lazy group where you are getting 'fliers' or pulling rounds and chasing ammo all over the page.  

I want to go back and try my .22s with standard velocity.  I will have to look at the .22 ammo i have again and see if there is anything I can improve on.  One day I will find screws for my10/22 mount and put a piece of glass on it to shoot the 100 meter challenge.

Wolf match extra will not shoot well in my 10/22.  Out of a test of 7 or 8 match grade ammo choices, I think it was the largest groups.  They were bigger than an inch at 50 yards.

CCI Standard Vel was one of the consistently best.  I am all out of it though.
