I know trap shooting isn't of huge interest to Arfcom, but it's a big part of our company (and my job). Last week, we were in Sparta, IL, getting the shell house set up for the Grand American Trap Shoot that starts in about 2 weeks.

We received over 200 pallets of ammo on 17 different semi trucks. The total case count was just over 23,000, which is about 5.75 million shotgun shells. Nearly 300 tons of shotgun ammo in all.

This is about 3/4 of the ammo, unloaded in the parking lot. At this point, some was already sitting in the building, and we were waiting on the last 2 trucks to deliver.

The left 1/2 of this building is the shellhouse. It's probably about 6,000 square feet and we use nearly all of it.

Here are a couple of crappy camera phone shots. We organize and stack the ammo by brand, and load (velocity, shot size, etc), then number it all to make it quick and easy to find.

Once the ammo is in, we set up cash registers, hang banners, etc, and then we're ready to open.

World Shooting Complex in Sparta, IL
The shell house is open from August 3-17th for the shoot.

Not in Sparta. It's all just shotgun target ammo.

We got in 25 cases of Remington UMC 9mm about a month ago (in KY at our main warehouse) and it was wiped out within a couple of days.

Agreed, but I hate the "Ask a guy" threads that are just completely vague and it feels like pulling teeth to figure out what's going on....

Obviously, we don't count the individual rounds, but we do inventory it all. Count the pallets as they come off the truck, and then count the cases on each pallet once they're unloaded. Very rarely, we will cut open a case or individual box to find that it's been shorted. But it happens when you're pumping out millions of rounds a day at the big ammo plants.

Nope. Not here, or in KY. That stuff just trickles in. We have about 5 pallets of Winchester 555 packs on order, and Winchester will ship us 1-2 cases a month. It's insane. They won't fill the entire order at once. It just gets spread around to everyone, little by little.

But seriously, I had the same reaction when I saw ~500k shells delivered for a sporting clays tournament. Same thing with the targets that showed up the same day.

The shoot runs from August 2nd to August 17th, so about 15 days. We overstocked a little just to be sure we have enough, but I'd say 80% of it will be gone by the end of the Grand.

At some point it will. This is a fairly new complex (opened in 2006), so I don't think they've had a reclamation project yet. But they probably will within another 3-5 years. Most big clubs will reclaim about once every 10 years or so, depending on how much they're shooting.

Too much weight. A full pallet is anywhere from 104-120 cases, and weighs between 2600-3000 lbs, so you can only fit about 14-16 per truck before you're overweight.

Not all of the trucks were completely full, but most of them were.
