AHHHHH!!!

http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/doctorwho/articles/Matt-Smith-to-leave-Doctor-Who

The BBC is today announcing that Matt Smith is to leave Doctor Who after four incredible years on the hit BBC One show.
...
But great actors always know when it's time for the curtain call, so this Christmas prepare for your hearts to break, as we say goodbye to number Eleven. Thank you Matt - bow ties were never cooler.
...
Matt's spectacular exit is yet to be revealed and will be kept tightly under wraps. He will return to BBC One screens in the unmissable 50th anniversary episode on Saturday 23rd November 2013 - TUNE IN!

Who?

Good riddance.  He took the Doctor from a multi-faceted multi-emotioned character, and turned him into a one-dimensional zany Doctor.  They can't kick his ass out fast enough.

Ok I just started watching first season of Doctor Who on Netflix. Dr. Who isn't the same guy? Am I watching the same series?

So far I'm not seeing what everyone raves about.

Can't say I've ever heard of him.

The actor changes every so often.  It makes sense within the story and they'll explain it to you.  If you're watching the "first season" from 2005, just hang in there; the series gets better and better throughout the first two seasons, peaks at the end of the second, is still worth watching a bit into the third season, and then suffers a slow monotonous death through the end of season six.

As soon as you get tired of ogling Martha () move on to something else on Netflix.

You should try Sherlock (bbc). Not too bad.

it takes a bit of getting used to, but aside from smith I've really grown to like the different doctors. I can only say I've grown to tollerate smith.

eta: without giving too much away, the way they explain the new actors helps to keep the series fresh.

As in "Grandfather" not the Doctor ? if so while I have watched since the 70's the early ones are a bit rough compared to new shows. Try the relaunch on 05 with Christopher Eccleston

He'll be appearing in the 50th Anniversary Special, IIRC.
He is my favorite, but Smith has sorta grown on me.
It helps his Doctor had Amy Pond as a companion.

I was a bit disappointed by the last season, but I am looking forward to the next.

Agree.

That said, regardless of WHO was the Doctor, the feminine sidekicks over the last few years have been very, very easy on the eyes.

I enjoyed the ones with John Pertwee and Tom Baker.

I haven't cared for the others and stopped watching.

Hopefully John Hurt will be in a couple of episodes as the Doctor during the Time Wars.  at least that is the rumor.

The last few seasons have been a let down, but that's because of lazy writing rather than Matt Smith. I actually like his version of the Doctor.
