First vote of the day now......

Preventing releasing the private info of CCW holders.....

Am I wrong to not be breathing a sigh of relief just yet?

Obama's angry backlash, the bill being pulled rather then killed outright, the two remaining votes today.

Not trying to be a worry wart (even though I am) but how hard would it be for Reid to change the votes required to a simple majority, do a little more arm twisting and cram the bill down everyones throat last minute with some kind of voice vote bullshit (see 86 MG ban and how it was tacked on to the FOPA).

?

Sorry for being the harbinger of gloom and doom but I trust these fuckers not at all.

It's possible, but they are voting on amendments to a larger bill and they all get the same vote threshold.  If he lowers it to a simple majority the freedom lovers will tack on 50 state CCW (which already won a simple majority yesterday), legalized RPG's, infinite ammo for all etc. and poison the bill.

So the current vote they are on withholds funds from law-enforcement if they release gun info like CCW permits to the press?

Yes.  At this point even good amendments dont matter as we'd much rather have the original bill fail anyways...

It would be better if the good amendments don't pass either. It will just give more R's reason to vote on the main bill.

Last  amendment from yesterday. Likely to pass, huge bipartisan support.

The bill itself is not supposed to see a vote today.  Reid said yesterday (It was on twitter) that they'll vote the amendments and then pull the bill so that the bill can be reintroduced at a later date.

I believe the bill still needs 60 votes just like the amendments, although I could be wrong.

To beat any filibuster (Thanks to senators Rand Paul, Cruz, et al) they need 60 votes minimum.

Is there anything left in the bill thats a problem?  ... though I guess it has no chance at this point.

Yes, the original bill has MUCH worse UBC in it than the Toomey amendment.  Essentially if you're not CLOSELY related, you have to have a UBC.  NY style.

The base bill is still a threat.

This.  But it sounds like Reid will pull the bill from the floor after the two amendment votes.

...so he can optionally bring it back later.

If Reid pulls the main bill and then re-introduces it later, will these amendments still be part of it? Or would there be a new round of debates and the chance to add other amendments?

Haven't seen the text.  Its stated purpose is to improve mental health records in NICS.  It was co-sponsored by Senator Alexander who has voted 7 out of 8 with the hardcore 2A position so far.  Unless they can come up with a new background check provision that can get 60 votes, it is going to get attached to a bill that doesn't have a chance in hell though.

Though they may give Coburn a vote on his amendment...

Yes.

Any bill Reid voted "Yes" on needs 60 votes to be reconsidered.  Besides this, quite a bit can be brought back or added later.

Does he have to pull it now/immediately after this last amendment vote or can he wait and do it later?

He can wait; but there is no real point to wasting the Senate's time with new votes on a dead bill unless someone has a deal that can get it past 60.

I'm not saying these aren't good or necessary programs, but if you want to get a boatload of Senators to vote for something, just put "expand Federal programs" in the title.

WOW !    95 - 2

So was it good or bad?  From what I understand, it expands .gov mental health programs.

Haven't seen the text; but probably doesn't have a lot to do with guns at all to get that kind of support.  They are taking up judicial nominations when they come back, so probably a slow day for gun news.

Current status as of 4/18/2013 1:40 Eastern:  All amendments required 60 votes to pass.  The amendments to protect gun owner privacy and improve the mental health system oassed by solid majorities. The AWB and mag bans failed to achieve even 50 votes.  The underlying S.649 bill is still horrible and not something we would want to pass; however it is also unlikely to pass and needs 60 votes.  The Senate is going to take up judicial nominations when they return.  There is still a rumor that Reid may pull the bill from the floor rather than see it die in a final vote and put it on the legislative calendar for later.

Manchin-Toomey amendment #715. Failed 54-46

Grassley substitute amendment consistent with the summary which is at the desk; Failed 52-48

Leahy-Collins amendment #713 (trafficking) Failed 58-42

Cornyn amendment #719 (conceal carry) Failed 57-43

Feinstein amendment #711 (assault weapons/clip bans) Failed 40-60

Burr amendment #720 (veterans/guns) Failed 56-44

Lautenberg-Blumenthal amendment #714 (high capacity clip ban) Failed 46-54

Barrasso amendment #717 (privacy) Passed 67-30

Harkin-Alexander amendment relative to mental health Passed 95-2

While this would be good, I'd almost rather see it left on and have it fail so we dont have to see it pop up when the next tragedy happens.

Q: if it was pulled (rather than defeated), could more amendments be tacked on?  I'm thinking "all states must allow NFA" which would be a nice present

So have all the amendments been voted on ?
will they be voting on the base bill when they come back from lunch ?

I can see them passing the base bill with the mental health thing and saying
"see, we got background checks like we wanted and better mental health laws like you wanted"

hope not though.

Any amendment which can get 60 votes can get tacked on.  Considering CCW Reciprocity only got 57; I think you may be out of luck this session.
