We're still here and kicking Miker! There probably won't be any updates the rest of this year. The industry pretty much shuts down from Thanksgiving to New Years, and we have a big of regrouping to do. I'll keep everyone updated with any news or progress as we start off 2015 in just a few weeks!

For those suggesting States to set up shop, I know it's probably unclear how such decisions are made. To keep it simple, there are basically 3 components we're looking for:
Most indies don't make money. Mine are getting there, but it's statistically rare (as in, less than 2%). Therefore, relying on Federal tax credits (section 181 - up to 40%) and State-level rebates (up to 30%) is a great way to give your investors a recovery of their investment - even if your movie is not a blockbuster. With that said, film is all about quality - which isn't always tied to cost. You can get great quality on a low budget if you find skilled resources and equipment and have a great story. That means you need local resources and gear, but it needs to be in an affordable area. Admittedly, we also want to be located in the southeast. Except for David - that's where we all live. Independent movie-making is a "drive your car loaded with gear and possibly sleep in it" kind of affair, so Washington State, Oregon and even Texas are out of reach. So once you narrow it down to the 6 to 8 states that are on that list - it turns in to a negotiating exercise with the states and local unions. For those that are curious, here's a State by State overview of incentives. There are a lot of devils in details on each of these, but we need to be in the 25% to 30% range if possible, fully funded, and with no after-the-fact contingencies and approvals (like Texas has). I hope that gives some helpful perspective! It should give a hint about why decisions like this aren't made on a dime.... |

View Quote AL's rebate program looks solid, actually. There's no max amount (i.e. "first file first serve"), and their amounts for in-State help are great. The cost of living is low in AL, and there's obviously a lot of land and locations available for cheap. The problem is going to be industry presence. It's simply not there. There are currently three film production companies in the entire state. Compare that to the 83 in Florida, 48 in Georgia, or 30 in NC and you get the idea. I'm interested to see what conclusions people come to based on what I'm posting so far.... |

What took you so long I really need to reorganize the first page or two, but that's where all the high-level info is. To cut to the chase - we started work in GA, but the big commercial projects are really killing our ability to get cast, crew and locations at reasonable cost. We're regrouping and reassessing where to set up shop. We have completed scripts and some casting done, and that's gone VERY well. There's a lot of work to do, though, to translate that to an operational project. Let me know if you have any questions! I'm the producer, and am always glad to talk about the Lights Out Saga! |

The story will be changed to reference Counties, Cities, roads and terrain suitable to our shoot locations. I know the Texans will throw their cowboy hats at us for that , but in reality - the setting of the story wasn't the important part of Lights Out. It was the crisis, the characters, their challenges, etc. Somewhere wooded with some open spaces should work. (2) It's actually not that hard to find properties once the state and general location are chosen. The incentives, rebates, crew and logistics and other details are what will drive the general location. Once we have the general location, we'll look for large tracts of land. (3) We really do need some pretty big sets. We need a subdivision we can dig trenches around, put walls up and progressively tear up. A good candidate would be a housing division that was started - and then the market dried up (so it sits empty now). We need some private roads we can do car chases and shoot-outs on. We need a lot of other locations as well, like a small town setting for the intro. Our trailers and crew alone will take up a 10 acre lot - that needs to be visually hidden from the actual set. A 100+ acre parcel is really what we're going to be looking for. Believe me - when we get to the point that we know where we're at - I'll be sure to post up what we need! ARFCOM has consistently proven we will rise to the occasion when called upon. I can't wait to get a few hundred of us back out on a movie set again soon Hope C is doing well after surgery DJ! |

The industry pretty much shuts down from Thanksgiving to New Years, and I really needed some time off too. I've put in a few hard years raising the cash (the hard way) and getting the project running, and it's definitely caught up to me. As some of you know, I took some time in the Bahamas and the Keys over the holidays to unwind a bit on the new floaty thing. It was nice, but now it's time to get back in the saddle! I actually had some meetings this week with production companies and film reps with a few States we're considering. As most of you know, finding a professional organization staffed with a skilled team and great connections (but willing to work for indie rates) has been daunting. Most of my partners in that space are transitioning to the west coast, so I'm starting from scratch. To date, I've had about a 30% success rate with production companies when first starting out with them. As you might imagine, I'm a little nervous about handing over the golden egg (Lights Out) to a new, un-established relationship. One thing I'm toying with is doing a small low-budget play with my new partners before tackling the larger effort. A contract dispute or suit over creative control could tie up the effort for years. I really want to be sure I have the right team before putting all my chips on the table. This is kind of a one shot deal. So, I'm doing a lot of soul-searching right now, and trying to make sure I do the best thing for Lights Out. In the meantime, we are continuing to refine the scripts, breakdown, budget and other logistical planning. I'm still working with sponsors to get the right gear in-hand, and get it prepped. We're still poking around for locations and cast, although that's hard to do without a final location or schedule. We ARE still pushing ahead! I cannot express how much we appreciate all the support!! - Travis |

- Travis View Quote Just explain to them what Arfcom is, and how near and dear to our hearts this production will be. While the COC forbids us making any threats, we also certainly couldn't gaurantee that someone wouldn't hunt them down and gut them with a rusty fillet knife. |
