I'm thinking of taking advantage of the military sales program while I'm deployed. I want a diesel to eventually haul a fifth wheel toy hauler. Do I want a Ford or Dodge? F250/2500 range is what I'm thinking with the big passenger cab. I've got a Dodge Big Horn 1500 and am not terribly excited about it.

I've owned an F250 and an F350. Both great trucks. I love that they still use a straight front axle. ( Not sure if Dodge still is or not). Ford has the transmissions figured out, and the new 6.7 seems to work pretty well for being choked out by all the emissions bullshit.

I bought a F150 through .mil sales at Leatherneck this summer... Having driven a Dodge for 10 years, I'm digging this Ford. My buddy just bought a new Ram 2500. It's a really nice truck, but there's something about those Super Duty's at work I really like.

|
Either one is a nice truck, regardless of what the fanboys say. Pick whichever one you think is most appealing to the eye and your ass.

What will your 5th wheel weigh fully loaded?
A 2013 F250 Srw 4x4 crew cab has a max fiver weight of 16,100# and 22,400# as a F350 dually. A 2013 Ram 2500 Srw crew cab 4x4 has a max fiver weight of 14,600# , but a staggering 30,000# as a Ram 3500 dually. Diesel for both. Auto in Ford, auto or manual in the Ram. |

Doges we had : Dad owned two I had one My brother owned three, were all bought new and all were pieces of shit.
brakes wore out after 5k on both my brothers and my trucks and after replacement did the same on both again. mine had the computer fry after 12k and cost $2 to replace. My dads truck had the carburetor literally fall off the intake going down a steep driveway on a job once. It also was a new truck and the other one he had the wiring was all crossed up, also a factory job. Dads trucks were early eighties models and mine and my brothers were 98-02 models. My truck was the supposedly bad ass SST and was not bad ass at all. I sold it and bought a new WS6 firebird and never looked back. I say buy the FORD and forget the dodge. |

I sell the Dodge / RAM Heavies for a living. My personal truck is exactly a yr old now, 2012 2500 4x4 Cummins G56 Crew Longbed.
Ask me anything |
|
The Cummins engine is the only thing Ram has going for it. Hell, they are so awesome Dodge dropped them from the corporate name and made them become their own brand. The truck will fall apart around the Cummins.
Duramax is a rebadged Isuzu. GM sold so many that they stayed afloat on their own and didn't have to take a government bailout to stay in business. Oh wait... Get the Ford and never look back. |

I like cummins engines(have had them in a few OTR trucks) but I love Ford and would go with that. The 6.7 is a really good motor and I think the SD platform is better than the Dodge. Just make sure you get the 350 since you plan on actually using it as it was intended for. The 250's are ok but they have a tendancy to sag in the rear with small loads on them, the 350 sits about 3" higher in the rear and will take the load better without sagging. I just picked up my new 250 last month, I ordered it with the camper package and the rear is only 1" higher than the front but since I really don't need the capability of the truck it'll work fine for me. Another option would be to order the 250 then replace the 250 rear blocks with a set of 350 blocks to get the extra lift. Cost woulod be alot less than upgrading to the 350.

Any of them will pull down a house and do what you're wanting it to do.
Buy whichever one you like the best, and maintain it religiously. You'll be alright. |

Cummins. Motherfucking. Turbo. Diesel. THis is the right answer. Buy the Cummins turbo diesel. THey are just fukcing awesome pieces of equipment. When you go to pick up your cummins, you'll notice the cummins is packaged in "dodge wrap" but dont let that bother you. FOr me, I bought a 2011 Cummins turbo diesel. I picked it up at Dodge but bought it only cuase it was a cummins. Its a great engine and it pulls like no other. I have pulled 5 to 7 ton trailers all over the mountains of montana going 80 mph. Its just bad ass. THe mileage is shit, but if your buying a 1 ton, you should expect this anyways. I also personally think the dodge is more roomy inside. Buddy has the Chevy, I've ridden in Fords, and I personally think the Dodge quad cab has the most leg and arm room. A grown man can easily and very comfortably sit in the back seat of my Dodge and have an enjoyable ride, just like they would if they were sittng in the front. I do believe the Dodge is cheaper as well. |

We have a bunch of diesel Fords ate rock in the fleet. Something is always wrong (and trannys always are at the top of the list).
|
|
We've got Fords at work.... There's one out for repair all the time
|

Ford, no contest! Cummings is a good engine, but rest of truck is junk!
And if you buy a Dodge or Chevy you become part of the BHO gov't family. Oh, and I own 4 Powerstrokes. |

My boss is getting rid of his 202 Ford SD with 34000 miles and getting a Dodge 2500 Mega Cab.
The Ford has had a vibration since new. Ford has told him that the truck is in spec and can't fix it. |

My 99 with the dreaded 53 block had 280k on the clock with less than $500.00 invested in repair parts the entire time I owned it. |

Dodge=.gov bailout
That reason alone I would buy a new ford over a dodge. |

It makes me cringe to say it (I am a ford guy), but the best 25 series vehicle out right how is the GM setup. The duramax/Allison combo hasn't been beaten by the other two this year. I would think about holding off for a year and seeing what ford tweaks.

Ford makes a better truck, will also hold value better than the Dodge. Cummins makes a great diesel, cant go wrong with either truck but Ford gets my vote.
|
|
If they put the Cummins into the Ford chassis there wouldnt be a debate. Dodge quality has been bad for me. Rustomatic.

Why would you ever want a gold bar wrapped in a turd?
Go Ford. |

Just bought a 2012 Ram 3500. If you intend on pulling a toy hauler, I would go with a 1T over ther 3/4T.
Why the Dodge and not the Ford? Both nice trucks...Ford engine seemed a lot more responsive than the Cummins but tow ratings meeting my needs at a price I could afford pushed me to the Dodge. Plus the 2012 Dodge does not use urea! This is not the case with 2013. |
|
The only way I’d buy a ford diesel is if they came with a 10 year 200k mile bumper to bumper warranty. All my off road and boater friends have been Found On & Off Road Dead in them. One friend has a communications business and has a fleet of 12 trucks. All but one of the ford diesels has been replaced with dodge diesels.
I drive a 2006 Duramax with 114k miles. It has never left me stranded. |
|
this isn't to answer the op's question but to ask a question.
what mpg are your new fords getting? what mpg are your dodges getting? |
|
When I bought my Ram 3500, mpg was not even a consideration that came to mind. It was bought to tow my fifth wheel. Crappy mpg is crappy mpg.
That said, without load my truck does about 17 on flat level roads and driven very conservatively. I hear the Ford does better. |

Also, anyone who doesn't LOL at a 3/4-1 ton truck with IFS is a big dummie head. SFA for the win!

I'm going to go slightly off topic here, but can someone explain to me who started the "Cummins is a great engine, but it's wrapped in a Dodge" argument, and why? I've owned 2 Dodge trucks, a 1st gen and a 3rd gen, both were awesome trucks. The first gen was a turd in the power department, but it never let me down. I've also owned a Ford W/ 7.3. It also was a great truck. Alslo drive an '11 3500 Duramax powered Chevy at work and it is pretty nice as well. In honesty, between personal rigs, and work rigs, I have had more problems with the 2 out of the 4 Ford SuperDuty trucks I've HAD EXPERIENCE with than the 4 Dodge Rams I've HAD EXPERIENCE with. To be fair, one of the Ford's was a 6.0L powered truck.
