New Hampshire's shading seems to cast doubt on the validity to me.

I'd be interested to know what the map on the left is supposed to represent. I haven't seen that much gun violence in ME and NH.

All I can imagine is our yearly hunting accidents perpetrated by dumb as shit drunken flatlanders from Massachusetts and Connecticut.

I am a cartographer and it is very easy to make maps lie with correct data. This looks like a simple population to crime ratio per county which really shows nothing. It may look nice and support a specific side of an argument but in real life this type of map does not hold water. A better way would be to skew the sizes of the counties to reflect total population and then use the population to crime ratio and the results would reflect a more correct look at the country. A simple normalization based on population is worthless.

If the author doesn't know enough to use the term "incidence" rather than "incidents" his data is suspect.

I will work on it and see what happens. Might be a day or two, with what I have piled up right now. It would be interesting though if it turns out that the initial maps have any truth to them.

Not fair.

(Filthadelphia Suburbs)

Really though, it just looks like urban area's voted D and have more violence.  That isn't surprising.

I've wanted to see a map similar to this for a long time.

First map: Color counties by how long they have been held by their respective party.  i.e. A county that has been democratically controlled (or went democrat for presidential election if the other data isn't available) for 50 years will be deep blue.  Repub, deep red.  Gradient scale right down the middle.

Second map: Color counties by current violent crime rate statistics.  Deep blue will be highest violent crime rate, deep red, lowest (use the media's tricks against them).

I'd wager anything that the two maps would look very similar on the whole.
