GREER, S.C. — Police departments nationwide are facing ammunition shortages and backorders with unknown delivery dates.

"It's never easy to get ammo, but since the tragedy in Connecticut, it's become even more difficult," Sgt. Chris Forrester of the Greer Police Department in South Carolina told WSPA -7.

The shortage is making Forrester rethink their qualifications and training for dozens of officers within the department.

"We’re having to be more conservative," he said.

Tens of thousands of rounds have been backordered for departments in Georgia as well, according to WSB-TV.

"It affects our ability to be prepared,” said Police Chief Terry Sult of the Sandy Springs Police Department.

"It affects the potential safety of the officers, because they're not as proficient as they should be."

WSB-TV reports that the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office of Georgia was forced to reschedule training exercises as they scramble to restock ammunition.

An ammo supplier for Georgia police departments, Jay Wallace, said the shortage is a result of the huge spike in ammo and gun sales to civilians in recent weeks.

“There’s been more demand for ammunition than there’s ever been," Wallace said.

Sult stated that they are prepared to handle short-term shortages, but not long-term.

"We're going be starting to get very concerned at the six-month level if that's all we have in stock, because then we have to start planning and rationing," he said.

They act like they burn through tons of rounds per month. Everyone on Arfcom knows cops don't shoot but once a year...

I'd be willing to bet 10% or less of the dept uses more than the minimum yearly requirement.

I just can't find a damn to give.

I'm thinking back to every article I've ever read with cops, chiefs, sheriffs, and departments pushing for more gun control on law-abiding citizens. Maybe the good cops who need ammo to train with should go ask the gun grabber cops for some ammo, since they helped manufacture the current shortage through years of beating the drum of gun control.

Maybe we should lift the ban on import commblock and african ammo...

Let the "Civilians" buy the cheap stuff to shoot the bulk of and that would free up the higher grade stuff from target duty.

My heart bleeds for them. Next I hope the spare parts, new guns, and magazines of all types become impossible to find.

PS Wait till the Zero bans ammo imports and magazine imports, everything that isn't nailed down will become impossible to find at almost any price. department budgets all over the country are going to go into the shitter.

Maybe DHS and the other government entities will sell them some of the millions of rounds they ordered this year.

I have sympathy for the departments with pro-gun leadership.

NYPD, Chicago PD, federal LE, etc? I hope they can't get ammo for a year and all their cops get decertified because they can't qual. Fuck those fucking fucks.

Yep. Just a subtle reminder that they are on the same level as us, whether they like it or not. No reason for them to get special treatment, especially when it comes to arms and ammunition.

Maybe with all these types of stories surfacing, more people, somehow, somewhere will realize that this country isn't controlled by the .gov or any extension of it. That we are still a free country, with a .gov of the people, by the people, for the people.

But I'm probably asking for too much.
Link Posted: 1/12/2013 11:11:49 PM EDT
oh well
Link Posted: 1/12/2013 11:17:39 PM EDT
Maybe they can ask the DHS for a few crates.

I know must of us hate the cops, but i rather they have the equipment they need to "try" to keep us safe.

I would rather the average citizen have all the equipment they need to keep themselves safe. The cops don't keep and are not required to "us" safe, take responsibility and protect your own ass.

I don't hate the cops. I want them to have what they need to do their job, but if the average person is subject to the ammo shortage, they should be too. No preferential treatment.

You have no idea how it works, do you? Police are not there to protect the citizenry; they are to investigate and apprehend perpetrators after a crime has been committed. That may be consolation to your family, bringing your killer to "justice," but it hardly matters to you since you're just as dead.

While many individual officers are fine and upstanding members of this community, their management and unions fuck us at every turn, calling for weapons restrictions, while exempting themselves.

Equal protection under the law - LEO/MIL should be under the same restrictions as the citizenry.

Really? Because I'm sitting on 350,000 round of Horandy 75 grain TAP and 1,000,000 round of .223 Horandy TAP practice ammo for a 131 man department. Don't get me started on the 1,000,000 rounds of Winchester .45 white box ball and Ranger SXT we have for practice and duty.

MOLON LABE, baby
