So my wife went shopping for me today at the local Cabelas. I'm on 12s forever and can't get there. We had an employee pricing coupon and had a short list of non firearm things we wanted.
Short list: 3 pair of hiker socks 2 safe door pocket organizers 1 pair female boots 1 female jacket 1 female workout pant 1 Lyman sonic brass cleaner Now for the WTF part There's an $11.97 mecical excise tax on something or everything in that list. Is this Obamacare shit?????? What on that list is a "medical device"???? |
|
"Q14. What is a taxable medical device?
A14. In general, a taxable medical device is a device that is listed as a device with the Food and Drug Administration under section 510(j) of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and 21 CFR part 807, unless the device falls within an exemption from the tax, such as the retail exemption. Q15. Are there any exemptions to the medical device excise tax? A15. Yes. There are specific statutory exemptions for eyeglasses, contact lenses, and hearing aids. There is also an exemption for other devices that are of a type that are generally purchased by the general public at retail for individual use (the retail exemption)." |

OST.
Cabela's in Dundee I presume. I would call the manager tomorrow. I'm betting it's a mistake in their register computer programming. |

Which products are taxable?
The new law provides that any device defined in §201(h) of the Federal Food, Drug, & Cosmetic Act (FFDCA) that is intended for humans will be taxable. The FFDCA is written very broadly to include instruments, machines, implants and in vitro reagents, among others. §201(h) also includes associated parts and accessories, which are (1) recognized in the official National Formulary, or the United States Pharmacopeia, or any supplement to them; (2) intended for use in the diagnosis, cure, treatment or prevention of disease or other conditions, or (3) intended to affect the structure or any function of the body, excluding products relying on a chemical reaction within or on the body or being metabolized to achieve their primary intended purposes. |

I wonder if it's not the sonic brass cleaner, as it could be considered an ultrasound device.

Wow Can hardly wait to see what comes next Yep,hooray for socialism. |
|
What was it that was taxed, can you tell by looking at the reciept?
|
|
everything that you buy will have to go up about 12 percent to pay for obamacare
|
|
The receipt total was $520.82. 2.3% of that is ................................. drum roll please ........................................... $11.97.
Link The $20B tax was included in the Affordable Care Act that was signed into law in 2010. The amount is based on a 2.3% excise tax that will be levied on the total revenues of a company, regardless of whether a company generates a profit, starting in 2013. Many companies will owe more in taxes than they generate from their operations. |
|
There are 3 kinds of ultrasound, diagnostic, therapeutic and destructive. The brass cleaner would fit under the destructive type which I know of no medical use but the diagnostic is self explanatory (pregnancy screening ) and the therapeutic is the same used in physical therapy and chiropractic care.

I like it. I hope every retailer does this so the morons can finally see who pays the taxes.

According to that definition, ammo could be subject to the new medical excise tax. |

Cabela's has to pay for the increase in their corporate tax somehow. From what I have read on here, some smaller places are doing the same thing by making a separate line item on the receipt. Just wait until the end of this year when folks find out they are getting their hours cut so the employer is not obligated to offer benefits. Welcome to 2013.

Title edited. It sure looks like the new Obamacare excise tax.

ETA: Original post below since it was quoted before I edited it:
I don't think some of you are understanding that this is a gov't imposed tax, not a Cabela's tax. Medical Device Excise Tax (Obamacare) |

I also edited my post because the FAQ that I linked said the tax was to be paid by the manufacturer not the consumer (generally). So it was bogus info and I removed it. ETA: I hate reading tax/law stuff. After re-reading the FAQ again, I think the tax can be imposed on the consumer. |

To reiterate - the medical excise tax total - $11.97 - is 2.3% of the entire receipt - $520.82. That means EVERY item purchased at Cabelas today fell under the tax.
|

I'm still trying to figure out the meaning of this phrase.
Quoted: I'm on 12s forever and can't get there. |

Quoted:
hell yeah, now we have an unofficial 2.3% federal sales tax I hope every business itemizes this on everyone's receipts so they can see exactly why the rise in prices for commercial goods. It's very honest the way Cabela's is not hiding this. Libs WILL take it the wrong way and just make another accusation towards business being evil and greedy. One step at a time folks. Oh, and Atlas Shrugged. |

Larue postBut in another thread topic here Larue is being bashed as greedy for having to go up on prices because of Obamacare

I doubt the FSA will even notice. They are so up to their greedy eyeballs with class warfare they don't care, they still stuck it to the rich.

They're just going to petition for higher welfare checks. I can't tell you how many times I have heard scum bags on Metro North talk about how their welfare checks don't account for the inflation of cigarettes. That's not even a joke. |

I hope he Cloward-Piven's the fuck out of this country until it all collapses into one big mass of rioting FSA idiots blaming the Republicans for not raping the rich enough. Bring it all down man. |

Quoted: Just wait until you refi your house or get a new mortgage. No shit...thankfully I just closed on what I expect to be my last refi/mortgage for a looong time a few days before 2013. |

I want to see the receipt. No way can this be applied to any of these items.
|
|
Will this apply to groceries?
utilities? gasoline? Every damn thing? |
|
Quoted: I doubt the FSA will even notice. They are so up to their greedy eyeballs with class warfare they don't care, they still stuck it to the rich. May I remind you what the "F" in FSA stands for? The FSA don't pay for anything they buy. WE do. |

Fuck yeah, I'll have either a 9.8% or 11.05% tax depending on where I am that day of the week. Bitchin'
