Is there an accepted minimum for ammo on hand?

By my count, I have about 12,500 rounds of center fire rifle ammo on hand. That primarily covers the three main calibers.

I have several thousand .22s and somewhere around 500-1,000 rounds of range ammo for each of my handgun calibers, plus a few hundred good hollow points for my handgun calibers.

I don't feel like I have prepared very well.

I remember folks here recommending 10 mags and at least 2k rounds stashed for each weapon you own

With the shift in prices over the last decade, I'd say most people probably have more many mags, and much less than 2k round per gun on hand now

My goal is 10,000 per rifle in 5.56/.223, 5.45, 7.62x39, 7.62x54R
5,000 for rifles I don't shoot much, 6.8, .308, and if I ever get into .50 Beowulf
5,000 in 2 3/4" 00Buck, Slug, and 10k or so in bulk pack 12ga
10,000 for 9mm, .380, .45,

After that, I'll prolly start stocking up on ammo that I don't have firearms for but might eventually be worth something. Or if I ever get into a rifle/pistol in that caliber

ETA: Forgot .22 I think that I'd like 20,000-25,000 of that

What are you preparing for?  Answer that and you'll know how much you need.

Do you shoot 2,000 rounds a year and want a 2 year buffer to deal with price fluctuations?  Then 4,000 rounds is enough.

Every time you ask your that question the answer is always "enough for a box or 2 more".

There are only two times in life one can have too much ammo:

-if one is drowning
-if one is on fire

I know some have more than me.  But I never knew what I had until I moved in December.  Well, yeah I kinda had a count, but SEEING is believing.  And when the movers put it al together on a pallet to move I realized I AM AN AMMO WHORE.

Enough is whatever you can afford. How I keep things in perspective when I look at ammo prices is to look at old issues of shotgun news and spot ammo going for 40% of current prices.

I read here sometime ago , is the only time you could have too much ammo was if you had to carry it and swim across a river and something about a fire.

I would say 6 mags and 1000 rounds per go to gun.  That's a minimum of course.

Ammo is a wise investment.  I buy what I can afford and have accumulated a reasonable stash over the past few years.  I dont have nearly as much as some, but I know Ive got way more than others.  I love buying and having ammo, I found a 640 rd spam can of AK ammo at local big R store the other day and felt like I won the lottery.  I never get out of a walmart without at least a box or few of something.

There isn't a single person in this thread who could survive a 300 round firefight.

Buy enough to make yourself proficient.  Have enough to load out your three mag pouches.  If you find yourself alive after expending 300 rounds, congratulations, you earned a medal.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say the average arfcom SHTF fantasy does not involve carrying 10 mags on their chest rig, hiking, doing Australian peels with a group, or really exerting a lot of energy at all.

I'd say it's closer to hiding behind the ammo bunker and picking off undesirables from a distance while your harem loads P-Mags for you, toppless.

Keep buying until it hurts, then buy some more.  Ammo tax, availability, stopped importation of foreign ammo...too many unknowns to risk it anymore.
