What NY_Shooter said.
I'd hire accountants, financial gurus, and my own fraud prevention team whose job it would be to quietly keep track of all the activities of the accountants and advisors. Plus there would be a second fraud prevention team to keep watch over the first team. Everybody would be watching everybody. Not everybody would be aware that they're being watched. I'd immediately buy myself a spacious property not too far away, close enough for convenient access to town, far enough away that I can't see the town. It would be spacious enough for an airstrip and a 1000 yard shooting range. Neighbors would be far enough away that they would essentially NOT be in shooting distance. It'd be set up for keeping a small number of horses and would be suitable for setting up a small farm for purposes of self sufficiency. I would set up my guitar building business on the premises. And I would find some good horses, one young and trainable, one mature and well trained, and hire a horse trainer to teach me to train the young one while continuing to train the mature one. That would be my new hobby. I'd tie up a significant section of the money in investments for financial growth and income. As for giving money away to family members, that would be done on a limited basis. Any that I in my own personal judgement believe to be "at risk" for abusive behaviors and habits would receive nothing that could be turned into cash for purchase of things they don't need. My gifts to those individuals would consist of ensuring that they have a decent roof over their heads and the ESSENTIAL bills are paid if they need a little help. But even that only goes so far. If they start blowing what they earn at their jobs, I withdraw my support. I will HELP them, I will not CARRY them. I would set things up so that even I can't make large withdrawals or expenditures without getting it countersigned, by someone I trust and who will look after my own best interests. Which would probably be one of my brothers. As for things like new cars, etc, I'm just not into cars very much. I doubt that I'd buy anything remarkably fancy, but I might spring for a total restoration of my 20 year old Camry just for giggles. I would also hire a top auto restoration company to seek out a clean example of a '78 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham and restore and convert it to be exactly like my old one, right down to the paint color and interior trim. That'd be my Sunday driver. |

Quoted: A mean lawyer and a borderline crooked accountant. ding ding, this is the correct answer. Protect your money before you spend it. Never know who's baby daddy you are suddenly going to become. Frankly it depends on how much money we are talking about, but if we are talking several plus million dollars then I would invest it all and live off the interest. |

Is it public record if you win? IF so, I would certainly want to move to a different state where no one knows me.

Is it public record if you win? IF so, I would certainly want to move to a different state where no one knows me. It varies by state. Some states will show your picture/name on the lotto website, no matter what you want. Some will let you claim it privately. I remember 3 people had won a big jackpot, and in the press-release photos, they just called them "The 3 Musketeers" and the pic was of 3 people holding the big carboard check in front of their faces. |

Pay off my debts, setup a trust for my son, then.... I wonder if I could make a difference in some place like Somalia. You know, some place no .gov is interested in or willing to do anything about. Some place a private army, excuse me, security company, might make a difference.

Move back to NH
Buy the family business Pay off my immediate family's debt Buy a couple hydro-electric power plants to mess around with Buy a mill building to play with and keep my toys at, and run the business out of Set up an endowment for technical education at the high school and tech school level Buy my Grandfather's house Buy a tract of land for a shooting range/hunting playground Go on a safari That'd be a start anyway. |
|
The first thing I buy is a lawyer to find out how much it will cost to get rid of the "wife" who left me and our son to move in with an old flame last year but now insists that she misses us and wants us back.
The second thing I buy is a decent and hopefully honest accountant / investment manager. First actual "thing" I buy is a plot of land large enough for a house, shop, pool, and shooting range, hopefully with some space left over for hunting. Then the structures, then some set aside for the boys, then the fun stuff. |
|
pay of the little debt I have
buy a brand new F350 CC with a 6.7 PS buy some prime hunting land and build a nice cabin on it. |
|
I think a helicopter that can land on water in addition to land would really be nice. Plus a pilot to fly it.

After I set up the Trust and legal protections, I would have my stuff packed up ASAP to a new address that NO ONE in my family knows under a assumed name. Most likely in a gated community.
Then pay off my parent's debts in a way that they won't get hit with taxes. From there, I would enjoy life, living of the interest of my winnings, living pretty darn well. I would pretty much vanish so the leeches/people wanting free handouts in my family don't bother me. |
