1 MOA ALL DAY LONG

The Official “How Good Are You” thread of AR15.com

What is it? It’s a challenge to all to prove how good you really are with a rifle! Not sometimes but consistently.

Keep it simple 5 shot groups, 5 groups per target

1 MOA = 100 Yards = 1.047"
––––––––-50 Yards = 0.5235"
––––––––-25 Yards = 0.26175"

Top 25 for each division

Separate list of 1 MOA shooters and a separate list for .5 MOA shooters.

REMEMBER this, all 5 groups of 5 shots must AVERAGE 1 MOA to make the list and claim the title of being a 1 MOA shooter.

Doing one .99" group and four 1.5" groups does not equal a 1 MOA shooter, it means you got lucky once and you are a 1.398 MOA shooter (assuming a 100 yard target)

This is a challenge but don't be afraid to try it out and post, every possible rifle style has been listed with a category and a distance. It's all in good fun and to be honest about your abilities.

With that in mind here are the rules.

1. ONE sheet of paper, 8.5”x11” preferred and it MUST HAVE ALL 5 targets.

Meaning 1 sheet of paper with FIVE targets. NO INDIVIDUAL TARGETS. THEY WILL NOT COUNT.

2. On that 1 sheet of paper with 5 targets you shoot 5 groups of 5 shots each. (In one day)

3. Each group is measured OUTSIDE GREASE RING TO OUTSIDE GREASE RING with calipers (preferred) or tape rule in inches. Then subtract the diameter of one bullet IE if your shooting a .223 and your 5 shot group measures 1.13" you will subtract 0.224" to get a group of 0.906". If you are shooting a .22lr you will subtract 0.223", for a 308 you will subtract 0.308" (Remember- the more precise your measurement the better)

Some common measurements:
.172" - .17 HMR
.223" - .22 Short, Long, Long Rifle
.224" - .223 Remington, .22 WMR, .22 Hornet
.243" - .243 Winchester
.284" - 7mm-08 Remington, 7mm Mag
.308" - .308 Winchester, .30-06, .300 Mag
.311" - 7.62x39 Soviet, .303 British
.338" - .338 Mag

4. NO MECHANICAL REST/SLED, NO VICE OR SIMILAR DEVICE THAT SUPPORTS THE ENITRE RIFLE, NO SHOOTING JACKETS, NO STRAPING THE GUN INTO ANYTHING, NO REAR SANDBAG ** OR REST. SHOOTER MUST HAVE POSITIVE CONTROL OF RIFLE.

THE POINT IS TO SEE HOW GOOD YOU SHOOT, NOT HOW WELL YOU CAN MOUNT IT IN A MACHINE.

5. OK TO USE sandbag, rest, ruck, bipod, rock with a hat, sling etc. on forearm of the rifle.

**Will be OK to use a small sandbag or bean bag no bigger then a softball that must require constant hand pressure to maintain hold on target. Only applicable for SPR and Bolt Divisions and Misc Small Bore

IE. Can NOT sandbag gun inplace. Shooter must maintain positive control of rifle.

6. Shooting position is up to you, sitting, standing, prone.

7.  Posting: 1st picture of target with 5 groups of 5 shots each, next to them write down group size. 2nd picture with calipers (or tape rule) left in place over BEST group. 3rd picture of rifle and shooting setup (ie. Sandbag, prone and so on). Post all 3 pics and also type in the post your 5 group sizes and what the average is. IE. .99”, 1.5”, 1.5”, 1.5”, 1.5” add them up, equals 6.99” and divide by five. So 6.99/5 = 1.398”

You can use the MOA formula, either way I will check the math and post the MOA on the result list.

Also type up specs of your rifle and ammo IE. Rem 700 with 168gr Federal SMK or Colt AR15 18" with Wolf 55gr FMJ or AK with 125gr Hand Loads PLEASE INCLUDE AMMO USED

8. In each division you can only have your name up once per gun. Meaning that if you shoot the Iron Sight 22lr with your 10/22 and average a 1.65” group and lets say place 4th. If you use that same gun and do worse, even if you would place better then someone else it will not count for your group. Best group counts.

Now if you then shoot Iron Sight 22lr with your M&P 15-22 and shoot better, say 1.25” average groups and place 2nd. Both that score and the 10/22 score will remain. Different guns will be allowed for different group rankings within a division. Best group counts.

This also goes for the 1 MOA list. Meaning only your best MOA will be ranked on the 1 MOA list BUT if you also shoot 1 MOA or less with a different rifle, that will also count and your name will be added to the list for each different rifle you shoot 1 MOA or less with.

9. Remember, this is NOT a Bullseye challenge, it's a Groups challenge.

10. Any and all ammo is fine I don't care if you use Factory loads or your super secret Hand Load that Moses gave you.

Nothing to win, just put up or shut up so no need lie on distance, we are all adults so honor system will be in effect!

MOA formula

How many MOA equal 2 inches at 200 yards?
(inches / yards) x 100 = MOA
(2 inches / 200 yards) x 100 = 1 MOA

ETA: I know this is in GD but please limit bullshit post. If it has nothing to do with this thread/challenge then please don't muck it up. And DON'T POST old targets, only post your results for this challenge.

Questions are cool, ask away.

Don't bother complaining about the rules, PUT UP OR SHUT UP! I don't care if your feeling get hurt because you can't use your precocious whatever it is. You have plenty of options.

This is to create as level a playing field as possible.

Tags and in's are fine!

This is for those that want to put up on honest effort and show what they can do!

I also have a target similar to the example post if anyone wants to IM me their Email, its a PDF
.

**Addendum to rules for SPR and Bolt division after talking with Rob01 in the Precision forum.

-Clarified info for Weapon and Ammo specs added rule 10 to address Hand loaded ammo
-Addendum to the 1 MOA since www-Glock19-com wanted to shoot 0.004" inside the exact 1 MOA we will be exact with our measurements.
-Clarified, just like multiple guns can be shot in a division for results so can you be added to the 1 MOA list if you shoot different guns for 1 MOA
-Changed the measurement for groups from Center to Center to OUTSIDE GREASE RING TO OUTSIDE GREASE RING AND SUBTRACTING ONE BULLET DIAMETER.
-Changed .22lr with optic from 100 yards to 50 yards and added a Misc Small Bore Division for other small bore rifles

9/24
-Added 22lr with magnified optic at 100 yards back to list after I read GD today...

9/28
-Added more downloadable targets

Alrighty, I made it out.... and I have good news

I can hit the broadside of a barn.

Details:

100 yards with the 1934 dated M91/30 you can see propped up, irons only. I had the green block for support.

On groups 1-3 I used 168 gr surplus 7.62x54R, and on 4 and 5 I used 149 gr silver tips.

I went ahead and cheated and used 5 individual targets...

The first group was 3.5 inches across, and then it got worse. Groups 2 and 4 had holes in the box just off the paper, but groups 3 and 5 are just as spread out as you can see. I didn't bother with trying to add up and average numbers. I probably should have shot without the bayonet since I pretty much know where to hold when I'm not using it. Ohh well, maybe next time will be prettier.

I also got to break in my new to me type 53. Really smooth shooter.

EXAMPLE POST

Target

Best group

Shooting Setup (prone off a ruck)

Spec:
AR15 16" barrel
Iron Sights
Wolf 55gr FMJ
Prone with ruck

Distance: 50 yards

Groups:
0.71"
1.03"
0.69"
0.94"
0.25" (Best)

(.71 + 1.03 + .69 + .94 + .25 = 3.62")

(Divide 3.62" by 5 = 0.724" group average)

Average = 0.724"

MOA = 1.44

MOA formula
How many MOA equal 1 inch at 100 yards?
(inches / yards) x 100 = MOA
(1 inch / 100 yards) x 100 = 1 MOA

or

(.5 inch / 100 yards) x 100 = .5 MOA

So for this example
(.724 inches / 50 yards) x 100 = 1.44 MOA

tl;dr

but i did get you a two clip group out of a garand that shot too high bottomed out and i had to eventually grind down the rear sight...

I predict a lot of these posts.

Well this is GD but it may end up getting moved.

pretty damned good shooting garand if i do say so myself

especially since that was two different years of HXP...

Nothing wrong with the group just has nothing to do with the contest.

OK looks like I am first up.

Division:
Iron Sight 22lr

Gun:
10/22 with Tech Sights
Blazer 40gr LRN

Position:
Sitting the ground with a sand bag and stool

Groups

Best groups
0.62"

Group Average
1.06"
.90"
.88"
.72"
.62"

Equals
0.836" Average group

MOA
(0.836" / 25) x 100 = 3.344 MOA

This was the best I could do, I tried a second time and had one group that measured 0.5" but I think my barrel got too hot in the 100 degree AZ sun and the LRN started to lead out in the barrel and my groups started to double and triple. I've found that when it's over 100 degrees that no matter the ammo, if it's lead it starts for lead the barrel pretty fast.

I also tried with the M&P 15-22 and while I had a two groups at 0.98" I had three groups that were like 1 1/2"+ so I didn't even bother with it.

Same with an old Mossberg US44c, that had 1 1/2'-2"+ groups!

ETA: Adjusted for outside to outside group measurements, not much of a change but it's more precise - working out the kinks here.

That's actually a pretty good group for a .22

Definitely believable.

I'll try it with my bolt gun next time I get a chance.  My guess is I'll have a couple good groups and a couple ugly ones

I am going to the range on Friday.

Hell I'm in at least for shits and giggles. I've shot .5 or better with my current rifle consistently with a couple of loads, but it's been a while since I have really had trigger time. Sounds like a fun challenge. I know there are a lot of guys that get really, really incredible groups that have posted them, far beyond what I can do.

If I can ever get to the range. In a bad financial state and someone is buying my scope, but I'm trying to hold them off for a week or two so I can finish testing some 6.8 110gr Accubonds. Probably use the 90TNTs for the shooting since that is my most accurate load.

I haven't shot anything for groups with this scope, last time was with an Elite 6500 I sold a few years back.

I can do the Eotech thing at 50 yards. I have that here. Need to sort out which of the TNTs are #400 primers and which are #41s. I have them all mixed up from cleaning up the reloading area.

I may try the irons, but that is a tough one with these glasses. I need new contacts and can't see the front sight. I have a stray cat that I have tried to shoot with an old  .22 multiple times and I haven't been able to hit it. lol. If I wear my glasses I can see the cat, but I can't see the front sight at all, and if I take the glasses off, I can see the front sight well, but can't see the cat.

Bah! I'm still deployed. I'll attempt this with my scoped Marlin 881 and my iron sighted M16A4 clone when I get back.

Tag. Hope this one makes it without GD crapping too much in it. Could be a real eye opener to all the texas sharpshooters here.

I will attempt with a 18" Noveske SPR.

Are no winners as there is no dead line. This will go one as long as AR15.com let's it- forever!

The point is to show folks what a consistent 1 MOA looks like. Lots folks claim 1 MOA, now it's time prove it. Bring some honesty back to the internet shooting community, or at least try

OP, I think you should edit the first post to state ONLY POST IF YOU ARE POSTING A TARGET.
Thead is already getting jacked up with goofy posts and "I would do this but ..... reason I can't".
These threads nearly always end up this way. Would be good if the mod could enforce it and keep it clean but I know that prob not gonna happen.
This will be a tougher challenge than most realize.

I did but most will continue to post excuse or complaint and not attempt because they know they aren't as good as they think.

Best I could do this weekend with my 1936 Izhevsk M91/30. Fired off a sandbag at 100yds @ Fort Brgg MWR Range, 10 shot group. Ammo used 1953 Surplus Russian 182gr Heavy Ball. Slightly less than 3MOA.

Someone invite CmJohnson to this thread,  a year or so back he said he could shoot under an inch at 100 yards off hand with a scoped rifle.  OFF HAND.  I challenged him to shoot 10 shots at a 1" square at 25 yards on video.  He said he didnt shoot for my amusement he knew what he could do and that was good enough

We'll see if I did this right.

Rock River lower with 7" JSE barrel and MBUS

Used magazine supported prone

The target 25 yards out

The finished groups

Smallest group

Largest group

I think I figured the MOA wrong, I used the side of the ruler you see and came up with 1.46

ETA: .9, 1.6, .9, 2.3, 1.6

If different pics are need just let me know so the right measurement can be made

I'm in for small bore at 25 yards with iron sights.

ETA: Won't be able to make it out until next weekend.

ETA: Why not smallbore at 50 feet? That's a pretty standard distance for 22 LR.

ETA: Printable 25 yard target (PDF) set to NRA dimensions. Make sure you turn off "scaling" when you go to print. It'll use up ink like a mofo. Caveat emptor.
