When I was a kid we had a house with a .22 range in the basement.

I use a Captain Crunch cereal box filled with crunchy socks to stop my .338 Lapua when I shoot in basement.
Sometimes it wakes my mom up though and then I have to do laundry |

Hell yeah! I do it all the time. You don't even need ear protection if you're indoors.

they make some plastic bullets for such things only powered by the primer and wouldn't cycle a semi.
I sure as hell wouldn't shoot a glock in my non existent basement with nothing to catch it. but i think you could do like some 1/2" steel plate angled down and you'd be good |

Yes, your bullet might be frangible, but the problem is your brick/mortar is ALSO frangible. Look at it this way, your bullets may be dust, but so will your wall.

I would suggest shooting the big marshmallows, they should absorb most of the energy.

Don't fire unless you're 30mi into the empty desert or woods. |

Thank you. I don't have any experience with frangibles, and they didn't exactly come with a manual. |

I read somewhere that you can fire into a 1 gallon bucket of ice cream and the bullet will not penetrate enough to come out the other side. But make sure it's chocolate. For some reason it's denser than strawberry or vanilla.

Well, you ain't gonna die. If you shoot at a steel plate you might get some spall to come back or something.
What's wrong with a phone book? |

Not a good idea, however, I do use a different type in my garage. I use wax bullets in some of my revolvers if I don't want to go to the range. There wouldn't be enough to them to cycle your semi as you use only primers or primers and a small amount 2.2 grns wt (3 grns measured) of black powder (triple 7). With the powder they go about 800FPS. They are accurate with just primers to about 15ft and with the powder to about 30. Even with them you'll need a good backstop as they go right through 1/2" gator board at 50Ft with the powder. I could use them in my basement if I set it up right but I don't want any residue inside the place. They still make X-ring rubber bullets and are available at Midway. Same idea but primers only and in rubber. Supposedly reusable, I've not tried them.

What's wrong with a phone book? What spall? It's compressed powder. They produce plenty of spall. Getting nailed by that 'powder' isn't any more fun than lead fragments. And you're going to need steel for them to work correctly. It's not hard to build your own inverted plate system against the basement wall that will work fine with frangibles. |

You still have the energy of the round as it hits. If it hits something softer than itself, it's going to take collateral damage.
Shooting plate may work, as it would be strong enough to absorb the hit and let the round disintegrate, but you would still need to worry about some splash damage, as it's not all instantly going to turn to powder. (there will be some chunks still) Not sure of the health concerns of shooting indoors without proper ventilation. I would suspect that there are better options for indoors, to include gas blowback airsoft pistols. Onyx |

Well, I had a 2mm piece of steel from a grill laid against a 4x4 in the back yard.
I just fired a test shot with the steel placed in front of the wood. It made it through both I may have under estimated these |
