I got hit yesterday afternoon. No power for a couple of hours. Didn't hit the house, but it was close. Blew the fuse on the high line out on the road where it drops to make the run back to my house. Then the gully washer started and I made a mad dash for the genset to keep the basement from flooding. |

Two years ago, my neighbor lost their roof and their car.
Same tree, split right in half. Half crushed the car, half split the roof peak in two. I'm not saying it doesn't suck, but it could be worse, I guess. Lightning is a bitch. |

Subnet - are you running an APC Smart-UPS or similar anywhere, for any of your gear?
I'm curious how well it held up. I have one between the wall and my home theater stuff. http://www.apc.com/products/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=SUA1500&total_watts=50 ETA: question answered below. |

Everything else on it (Cisco gear) seems fine. That doesn't surprise me. I don't remember what they're called, but I remember my brother and step-dad installing small in-line fuses of some sort when they would be working on the incoming service at various places before connecting any other gear. Don't know if they would have helped in your case though. I had little doubt you'd have your important gear protected. Glad you and the fam are safe! |

I don't know how much expierience your electrician has with lightning strikes but have him check every junction box for signs of damage. Just as you know the the electronic stuff may go out over time, the wires inside your house have been stressed...might be time to replace the fuses with breakers (in some jurisdictions you will need to upgrade to code to get passed by the electrical inspector). Too bad we cannot harness that energy. Glad you are okay!

I lost most of the electronics in the house once due to lightning, luckily no structural damage. Later on, I was mowing the yard and noticed that the ground wire had came loose from the ground rod. Probably would have been all right if that hadn't come loose.
My Mom and Dad's house got hit one time and it flashboiled the water in a pipe in the foundation and it 'sploded. No one was home and it ran for a while. That was a mess. |

Depends on the insurance company. My house got hit two years ago, and the only thing we lost was the refridgerator. I have a $500 deductible policy, and my ins. company told me to go out and buy a new fridge and send them the bill. They deducted the $500 and sent me a check for the difference. They even tried to get me to claim an extra $50 for lost food. I didn't lose any food, so I declined the offer. |

Looks like the current travelled along the phone cable towards the modem, and then back out the residential gateway towards the DVR. Explains how both of those got toasted, while everything else around them was fine.

All the runs to the other rooms were still coiled up waiting to be connected. It took out our grounding rod a foot down into the ground, just vaporized it. The lovely Countess Von Jeepnstein was on the front porch when it hit about twenty feet away. I was inside wiring up a range hood and felt the hair on my arms stand up right before it hit. I knew it was coming and thought for a split second that I was a goner. Lightning is a funny animal. I'm glad to hear it wasn't a direct hit to the central nervous system. |

Wow! I didn't know lightening could actually make things inside your house explode. When we were kids my Mom would never let us watch TV when it was thundering outside because she was afraid it might explode if the pole got hit.
We thought that was just an urban legend... so we snuck and watched TV anyway... ![]() |
