I didn't take the cover off, in pic #4. It blew completely off. Destroyed my brand new coffee maker in the process. Let's see, so far....new well pump, electrician is busy replacing all manner of boxes and receptacles, my DVR and modem are toast, I have some minor fire damage in my garage...the list goes on. Lightning is a bitch. |

That sucks and may be expensive but it could have been much worse. Hopefully you get it sorted out soon.

My Brothers house and truck were hit last Friday. Fried his truck and most electrical / electronics in his house.

I watched a freak thunder and lightning storm come through here a few weeks ago (very rare) and wondered what it would be like if the house took a hit.....

Had the same thing happen 5 years ago. Destroyed the fuse box and every piece of electronics in the house that was plugged in (tv's, water softener, radios, ac unit, etc). Also destroyed the 2 windows in the room the lightning hit. The metal frames in the windows exploded.
I tend to unplug everything I can during a thunderstorm from now on. |

Dang! We had it hit once but all it did was knock out a few electronics and blew a hole in our heating element in the oven. We saw smoke coming from the kitchen after we heard a loud pop. Weird because it hit things in a triangle shape around the house.
The scary part is I was about to bathe our baby girl in the stainless steel kitchen sink.
Glad things weren't worse for y'all! |

I'm pretty sure you can just shove some pennies in that panel and be back in business!
Lightning strikes suck - we had a ground strike at the last house that hit my media/network panel by way of the incoming cable feed... made the patch cables jump. Lost a lot of gear that afternoon. |

It charred, because...lightning. |

I was told after my strike that there is basically no surge protector that will help if you get a direct strike. They really only help with small power issues. |

Any strike with enough energy to shatter a switch cover is pretty much going to blast right through a surge protector, too. |

Subnet, call your homeowners insurance company if you haven't already, lightning is almost always a covered peril on homeowners policy.
THIS is the kind of thing you pay homeowners insurance for. |

Glad you're ok. You're lucky the entire house didn't burn.
We had a near-direct lightning strike run in through our cable lines about a month ago. It's unreal how much power goes through one strike. It blew the junction box off the outside of the house, fried our modem, cable box, etc. The little plastic trim piece on the front of the cable box was blown several feet across the room. |

Any of it protected by UPS/Power Conditioner?
Wife and I bought an older home - made sure the expensive equipment went on UPS. When I lived at home, we had a couple Oneac power conditioners that some customers of my step-father were getting rid of because they were going to smaller units. It was great having a 150lb conditioner under my desk protecting my PC while gaming - not so great when we moved ![]() |
