I'm reasonably tech-savvy, but I'm usually a little behind the leading edge with these things. I'm thinking of getting my female a tablet, touch-screen computer for a gift. The thing is, she doesn't like Apple products. So.... what are the alternatives to the iPad and what are their pros and cons? What features should I look for or avoid? Etc.

If I were buying one I'd be looking at the Google Nexus 7. Same price as the Kindle Fire was, but a lot more to offer.

I'd say figure out for sure what you want it to do. There are some "Tablets" like apple or android ones but there are also some that run full Windows 7 (or win 8 later this year). If you want it to run programs similar to a desktop PC I'd go with one of the windows based ones.

Just internet browsing, video-watching, and game-playing. She doesn't do a lot of computing, and she has a laptop for serious work. She just wants something to play with.

What does the iPad do that others can't? More apps?

I just got the Google Nexus 7 a few weeks ago and for just playing around it has been great. You don't have memory expansion slots so I got the 16 gig,the only down side I see with this tablet is watching movies the sound isn't the greatest ,but for music it OK because it has an EQ and lets you boost the volume for music only.I bought a set of headphones and it makes it better.

I haven't read this much in years, but I'm to cheap to buy books so I have been reading the free ones right now I'm reading Moby Dick, and a bunch of survival manuals
I know it's the way it's going to be but spending $20.00 to $30.00 on a e-book seems ridiculous to me,I want that bitch in paper on my shelf.

I was all set for the Nexus 7, then I looked at the Asus transformer. I think the Asus is the one I'll be getting, 32 gig, sd slot, hdmi out, and a ad on keyboard, that makes it like a laptop. It comes with ICS, but will ne getting the Jelly Bean update soon.

I just got this one about a month ago: Acer Iconia A700

It's been great so far. It replaced an HP Touchpad that I gave to a family member. The Acer runs Android 4.0 so it's nice to have access to all of those apps. Watching videos is great since it's got a true 1080p display. Battery life is good too.

I've got an Acer running Windows 7. Functional but nothing stunning. If I had it to do over, I'd just get a smashing laptop. YMMV

My wife has a Samsung Galaxy Tablet 10.1, she loves it.

I tried to talk her into an Ipad, she liked the Samsung better. She likes it a lot, and it runs pretty well.

I have been entirely happy with my Asus Transformer, I have the older T101 model but there is newer version on it ASUS Transformer

I use it every day, and while I have a laptop, it rarely gets used in comparison. The time it does is when I have to use installed windows software for things. If I did this more often I could be lured to a Windows tablet. That said I am very happy with it.

Mine spends about 95% of it's life as a tablet, and it is only when I travel do I tend to use the Keyboard Part (becomes a little laptop). I have a 32gb model, with a 32gb MiniSD and also a 32gb full sized SD card. All in all it is excellent. But also the keyboard has 2 USB ports which will allow a mouse etc. But more importantly provide enough power to run a 3.5 External HDD that I keep movies on.
Used in this configuration when I flew Air Asia from Christchurch to Kuala lumper (11+ hours) I watched movies almost the entire trip, and had around 1/5 of the battery left at the end of the trip. (the Keyboard discharges it's battery in favour of the screen battery)

The only complaint I have about it is that it requires a special charger that has a 15A USB output, and the charger/usb cord is proprietary.

Asus did piss me off with the keyboard dock. They said that the one I bought for my tf101 would be compatible with future versions of the tablet. They lied.

After doing some research, I decided on a Kindle Fire. It's inexpensive, but seems to do lots of stuff.

I hope I'm not disappointed.
