I'd be fine if everything came with mildots with thick side-posts so the reticle was still useful in low light after it was too dark to use the holdover dots.

I'm not a huge fan of long range so I like low magnification optics that give you the option if you need it but can still be used in close.
In that regard, I like the Elcan SpecterDr reticle. 1-4x with a BDC reticle or just an illuminated center dot for CQ. Had one in the desert and it is now the ultimate object of my lust.

Have never shot with one so no first hand experience but when funds become available, it's the one I'm going to purchase. http://www.grscinc.com/crs.html Otherwise, a simple mil-dot reticle works for any purpose needed. |

Leupold Long Range fine duplex.
Thier varmint duplex is pretty bad ass too for long long shots in wind too. |

Very nice. $2K ...oh well, buy once, cry once? It's a little simpler than the GRSC and twice the price. That 1x-4x lever is kinda neat ...durability? |

For precision shooting at long ranges, a mil-dot. Now that I've figured out how to use one.
For 0-200 yard ranges, red dot with flat shooting rounds.. |

Simple duplexes without all that busy bullshit.

I don't really have a preference. I mainly look for the one that is the least busy and still do the job. I try and travel as light as possible in the field so my scope often has more uses than just a sight. A busy reticle can get annoying and block the view.

I like regular mildot or heavy duplex. I also like the Zeiss Rapid-Z reticle and system.
I have come to really love the EOTech holograph since recently getting one. Too bad there is no EOTech with a lower objective height, so you can get a decent cheek weld on other guns. I'd like to put one on my slug gun, but don't want to have to add inches to my stock comb. |

For long range work:
Premier Gen2 XR Close second is Vortex EBR2B Short range is Aimpoint dot. |

depends really. I like Mil-Dot for long range but an illuminated donut-acog on top of a stealth upper is like a laser beam for a few hundred yards.

I currently use a Mildot for long shots and German #4 heavy post for shorter range / hunting work. Red-dot on the carbine for really short stuff.
That Horus / Vortex style reticle, although busy, looks like it could be super sweet for long shots. Been meaning to try one for a couple of years, but never had the opportunity... And not gonna drop that coin for a reticle I may not like when I am on the gun in real life. |

There are a few videos showing how to use it. Pretty intuitive once you get the idea down it would appear. Probably less math and guesstimating than using a Mildot... Sort of want... Afraid I might hate it and be out some cash if I had to sell it used. |

Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile I've heard of tricks where one could judge distance based on the size of the opening, but I just find it to be a scope that leads itself to fast target acquisition in a wide variety of lighting conditions. For some reason I find the top vertical crosshair on most reticles to be somewhat distracting on moving targets especially. |
