The long and short is that reprocessing greatly eliminates the volume of nuclear waste, thus allowing different long term storage options, or that's how I understand it. |

The Commission stated that licensing reviews should move forward– only final licensing was put on hold. So the final step in licencing is indefinitely suspended. That's not putting a full stop to the licencing process how? You can still spend a lot of money trying to get licensed before you never get the license. |

The long and short is that reprocessing greatly eliminates the volume of nuclear waste, thus allowing different long term storage options, or that's how I understand it. You Sir, are on the right track. The reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel (please bear in mind that we as Amercians can only consume 2%of nuclear material while in a nuclear reactor [Thank you fuck head politicians] and the majority of our nuclear material waiting to be buried is still very viable material) takes what is given in and utilizing magnets and unicorn poop (I have no idea how they fucking do it) they spit out the new material, but have left over a highly radioactive batch of nuclear waste. This waste would be what we have to store at yucca given that his has no purpose other than to melt your face off. The upside is that most of the material is reusable and we can keep reusing the material until it is compeltely spent. This reduces the half life of the spent waste in half each time it is reprocesed. The other side of the sword is that it becomes increasingly lethal with each reprocess. Reprocessing is allowed, but without the funding (Oh God, I know this will start a shit storm) to build such facilities then there is no profit to be had so no company is going to take a multi billion dollar philanthopic route and "do it for the children". This is what we need to have happen though if Nuclear is to survive. And for the Thorium crowd, please feel free to address your local energy provider and tell them to make those. There is not one Thorium reactor online within the United States. There is a reason for this. There are politics involved. There is science involved. There is the dealing with the local population where thhese plants would have to go up. Solve their problems and maybe you will get a slice of the pie. I am a big proponent of thorium LFTR reactors, but I don't know two fucking things about dealing with the rest of that shit so I leave the rocket surgeons at Arfcom to solve that riddle. |
