THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT
They are asking the NRC to prove something that is impossible to prove before they un freeze the the permits.

Clinton and Ried shut down the only solution to this issue decades ago now the Courts are going to drown the NRC for years trying to get an all encompassing "what if report" to leverage for not renewing the permits permanently.

I would love to know what is going to happen when these plants are forced offline because they can't renew their permits and 20% of the country starts experiencing rolling black outs...

We don't want nuclear because it's dangerous.
We don't want coal because it is dirty.
We don't want natural gas because fracking will kill us all somehow.
We don't like wind because it kills birds.
We can't use solar because it is inefficent.
We can't use geothermal or hydro in lotsof the country because the resources aren't there.

So how do the watermelons intend to get the electricty to power their electirc cars and laptops and latte machines again?

Allow reprocessing of spent fuel and the whole problem goes away.

Of course that's contrary to the goal of killing nuclear power.

By controlling which businesses are allowed to use energy, when and how much, the Administration can more easily pick and control "winners and losers" in the business community. If you are an approved business venture (green) then you will receive the energy you need to succeed. Frivolous and useless businesses (firearms, ammo, survival needs) will be eliminated by the Administration over time and leave more resources for "Preferred Businesses".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorium

Canada, Germany, India, Netherlands, the United Kingdom and the United States have experimented with using thorium as a substitute nuclear fuel in nuclear reactors.[2] There is a growing interest in developing a thorium fuel cycle due to its safety benefits, absence of non-fertile isotopes, and its higher occurrence and availability when compared to uranium.[2] India's three stage nuclear power programme is possibly the most well known and well funded of such efforts

Why the fuck is a goddamn federal court telling the goddamn NUCLEAR REGULATOR COMMISSION that it can't issue permits?

And as previously mentioned they HAD a solution for the waste in Yucca Mountain, but the fucksticks shut the goddamn thing down. All that money and work WASTED.

The Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Repository was to be a deep geological repository storage facility for spent nuclear reactor fuel and other high level radioactive waste, until the project was defunded by Nevada Senator and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in 2010. It was to be located on federal land adjacent to the Nevada Test Site in Nye County, Nevada, about 80 mi (130 km) northwest of the Las Vegas Valley. The proposed repository was within Yucca Mountain, a ridge line in the south-central part of Nevada near its border with California.

Although the location has been highly contested by both environmentalists and non-local residents in Las Vegas, which is over 100 miles (160 km) away, it was approved in 2002 by the United States Congress. However, under the Obama Administration[2] funding for development of Yucca Mountain waste site was terminated effective with the 2011 federal budget passed by Congress on April 14, 2011. The US GAO stated that the closure was for political, not technical or safety reasons.[2] This leaves United States civilians without any long term storage site for high level radioactive waste, currently stored on-site at various nuclear facilities around the country, although the United States government can dispose of its waste at WIPP, in rooms 2,150 feet (660 m) underground.[3] The Department of Energy is reviewing other options for a high level waste repository.

We should be recycling most of the waste anyway. It's another boneheaded issue that we have no infrastructure/facilities to recycle waste like other nations.
Please tell me what you had for breakfast.

Two points -

#1 - Reprocessing still doesn't eliminate the need for long-term storage. You will still need to store high level waste after it is reprocessed.

#2 - As far as Yucca is concerned, this is like Global Warming (AKA climate change). The liberals shout from the rooftops that the matter is "settled" and keep shouting until everyone else stops talking. The fact is Yucca Mountain is far from "done." All that needs to happen is GOP takes power and starts it back up. The Federal Court of Appeals issued an opinion recently (LINK) which delayed ruling on the issue of whether the NRC was allowed to stop evaluating DOE's application, all stemming from the legal issue of whether DOE had authority to withdraw its application when the Nuclear Waste Policy Act required them to build the repository. The court's opinion delayed the ruling giving Congress the chance to act through a budget either (1) funding the project or (2) changing the law by saying that no funds are allowed to be spent on Yucca. BUT, the court indicated pretty strongly, that it will be required to order the Gov't (NRC) to resume its evaluation of the Yucca license if Congress doesn't act one way or another. Well, Congress isn't going to do JACK between now and December (the court's deadline). So, we shall see what happens with that.

Let's hope power is taken back across the board, and we can get some things right.

Trying to explain the underlying issue here (the NRC's Waste Confidence Rule) is pretty much impossible, as the NRC (and the Nuclear Industry) was unable to adequately explain it to a federal court in hundreds of pages of briefs. You just have to understand that the court's ruling inspiring this temporary hold on nuke plants is not off base. ALL of this stems from the DEM's illegally closing down Yucca in violation of the NWPA.

More than that, if the companies turn off the plants, the feds simply nationalize them in the name of national security or some such thing. There is no advantage to doing that.

Except that operators (I assume you are talking about plant operators) cant do dick. The companies that own them are going to milk out the last pennies they can and let the lawyers handle it. They are in a business mode, not social protest mode. That shit isnt profitable.

More than that, if the companies turn off the plants, the feds simply nationalize them in the name of national security or some such thing. There is no advantage to doing that.

Yeah. The problem with going Galt, is that it couldn't work in a real world. You don't have one principled person to shut down the company and leave it to the looters. You have boards of multinational corporations which do more than just nuclear. Also, you have all the workers to consider. While a strike may be alright for the billionaire owner, the average nuke plant operator probably can't afford to walk away and go live in Galt's Gulch. So, if the state took it over, they would have no problem running the joint.

So how do the watermelons intend to get the electricty to power their electirc cars and laptops and latte machines again?

Watermelons. Excellent descriptor, Sir.

The backbone of US nuclear energy generation are light water reactors. Designed in the 50s, they use solid fuels, are inefficient compared to modern nuclear reactors designs, and require strict vigilance to prevent a catastrophic meltdown. 60 years later, after all these years of technological advance, we can't do better?

We can, and we could of done it 40 years ago.

I know this has been posted here before, but its a good watch.

It would be nice if a state grew a pair of balls and told the feds to take a hike and build what is needed, any ways.

State's can't. This falls pretty squarely into interstate commerce. It is no a hard argument to make that a nuke plant effects more than just the state in which it is located (e.g., power output to other states, national and multinational owners, water usage from interstate sources, massive potential environmental effects in the event of an accident, etc...)

Green on the outside, red on the inside I can't take credit for it. I heard that years ago.

Also, some more information from the NRC Blog...http://public-blog.nrc-gateway.gov/2012/08/09/deciphering-the-waste-confidence-order/

Let’s be clear: Tuesday’s Order was not a “Full Stop” to NRC’s licensing process. The Commission stated that licensing reviews should move forward– only final licensing was put on hold.

So the final step in licencing is indefinitely suspended. That's not putting a full stop to the licencing process how?

Agreed. People have power, but they refuse to use it.

Those greedy corporate bastards concern for the bottom line is keep a number of regions supplied with life saving power.....while the caring people in the government would give two fucks if the power stopping getting generated and people whose lives (people in hospitals and in old folks homes to name a few place where power it vital) are dependent on reliable sources of power had to go without.

Because the NRC will continue to evaluate applications for new reactors and re-licensing while simultaneously re-working the Waste Confidence Rule to satisfy the courts. Therefore, the NRC will not issue licenses, but it wouldn't have been ready to issue any licenses in the immediate future regardless of this order.

Do you have any clue how long it takes to evaluate an application to license a nuclear power plant? Quite some time (whether the current timeline is appropriate or not...)

It is all by design. Greenies want the human race to perish.

AND WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!! The greenies don't give two fucks about people or the suffering they are going to cause with their policies...which is why when society turns to render hippies/greens/commies/liberal progressives bodies for bio-fuels to help power our survival I will not give a single fuck.

Bio-fuels are LIBERALS.
