Cats act like cats in the wild? Holy fuck! That's astonishing news. I'm sure some wildlife biologist got his PhD or ScD for that new bit of info and rightfully so.

Cats are hunters. No surprise. Lucky for dogs that the average domestic cat is not any bigger than it is.

Like it or not they do alter the local ecosystem.
There is always a pile of feathers or fur on the ground by side of my house from my neighbor's cat. (not to mention the piles of catshit) The missus is more outraged than I am... I would love to shoot that bastard..... |

I take our neighborhood free roamers on a one way ride to the country, punctuated with a shotgun blast when I get one in my traps. I'd laugh my ass off returning that camera to the researcher.

If dogs were let outside to roam went around killing everything they could, you'd see an entirely different attitude then what the typical cat owner displays.
I USED to have a bunch of bluebirds around the house. I USED to have feeders out. The neighbor who collects cats USED to have cats..............which she allowed to roam everywhere around the neighborhood. |

They would have saved a lot of money by contacting local farmers....
From a website relating to feral cats in Michigan..."fluffy" is no different... ... A further concern is not only the number of cats being released, but their amazing fertility. It is estimate that a single pair of feral cats can grow to 10,000 within five years; some suspect that the stat'es feral cat population may be as large as the population of domestic cats. In most cases, these cats are trapped and euthanized at a rate of approximatelt 76,000 per year. Detroit is said to have 657,000 feral cats, and there are believed to be 10,000 feral cats in Grand Rapids.
There is a reason that many land owners in farm areas (they-feral cats- will eat and/or kill chickens, pheasants, rabbits, and the list goes on and on) that are impacted by feral cats make sure that they meet a little lead...for some farmers the "cats eat the mice" slogan is not entirely true. In short, they are noticing that euthanizing is not working, so they want to catch them and neuter them! The damage will be much grater than it already is if they decide to return feral cats to the wild; and again, "fluffy" is no different. |

I like cats, I have 3. One is the lone survivor of a a litter of 3.
They do interesting things, and I can imagine thats how they are in the wild. They have the primal instinct. BUT, people should really keep them indoors. These little fuckers breed like squirrels, they are all over my neighborhood, which has a high concentration of senior citizens (and they LOVE cats). They die, go to old folks homes, or move, and the cats get left behind to breed with other strays. And for some reason, they end up in my yard, and breed for 8 generations. I've watched this happen for the 7 years I've lived in this house. I've cleaned up DOZENS of dead cats, kittens, and the squirrels they've beheaded for food. I've cleaned up plenty of what looks like murder scenes on my front porch. They've finally gone, surprisingly. We had one stray that was here for about 4 years and she finally bailed on us. Spay, neuter, whatever, it doesn't really matter. Keep them inside. It keeps them disease free, flea-less and out of people's yards. It's the same things as those damn dogs that people let run loose. Keep your animals to yourselves. |

shocked to discover? two years ago there was a program on discovery talking about the numbers of animals killed by other animals... the house cat came out far ahead of anything else...
and ya cant hate an animal for being what it was intended to be... wutz the problem... is it one of those "them squirrels are for ME to kill" kinda thing? fucking wolves kill all MY elk.. or the other various slack jawed claim to sole hunting rights ya see the hats around here proclaim... eta:... We are talking about the idiots who don't want a dog or puppies and dump them in the country. The dogs are now forced to fend for themselves, no more store bought dog chow every evening. The dogs revert back to their basic instinct, not their fault, it is what they must do to survive. The pack of dogs soon find it is much easier to kill domestic livestock than wild deer, or other animals. They can also get aggressive against humans as well. These type of dogs need to be eliminated. Period. I think that dogs being domesticated breed have less fear of humans and being around human dwellings, as opposed to the coyote or wolf. The lessen fear makes them more willing to approach stock pens and barns. It would also explain why they are more willing to approach humans and/or attack them. |

Most of the "Death to Fluffy" posters in this thread are thumping their chest about shooting any unattended animal on sight. It just seems strange to me that I don't find it necessary to kill domestic animals (or any others really) on any sort of regular basis even when I'm out in the country. To listen to some here though, Ma can't leave the farmhouse without being set upon by a pack of feral, rabid Abyssinian housecats
Then again, I'm not a hilljack with an itchy trigger finger. |

Give it about 36 hours before you're puppy chow. ITT ARFCommers who claim they know a lot about animals prove the opposite. |
