Besides the obvious, I wonder if the pilot had a spell of something hit him. Low sugar, heart issue, stroke... something that impaired his judgment and he just froze up.

There's little doubt he was pushing that plane, but I wonder if another pilot who let himself get in the same situation would have steadily gained some altitude - or if that plane would have gone down as fast as it did regardless.

He had his hands on the controls until the camera stopped.

There's not much that looking at the sectional would help him at that point.

<––- Not a pilot but during that "takeoff" I woulda been inclined to ask "Hey dude, are we going to fly there or should we just drive?"

I also know that "high & hot" is not a friendly combination for flight, especially with thingies that have blades that whirl around instead of the ones with fire coming out the ass

If I was seated in there I would have also been very concerned with the protracted roll out and anemic climb rate.

I would like to put a positive spin on the accident. It is a good example of why you take first aid classes and refreshers. The guy's head should not have been elevated. His clothes should have been loosened.

Looks like the pilot pulled a crash just like pilot of Aaliyah in the Bahamas. Overweight.

It was mounted to the yoke and his left hand is on the yoke right next to it. His thumb may have been bumping it, but he was not using the iPad during the crash.

Is a postive spin one where the plane goes right or left?

Ugggghhhhh... didn't care for spins in either direction!

Just never trusted the little Cessna's wings to stay attached during semi-aerobatic maneuvers. Probably reflected in the low opinion I had of my FBO's shoddy maintenance policies as much as anything.

I suspect the pilot had done this before at that field, and had got away with it. I'm sure he knew the airplane's performance was going to be grossly limited, but he also knew he had a long clearway to gain altitude: gain enough altitude to clear the trees and continue climbing as he tracks down the valley . And that is why he doesn't look concerned. This time, however, something was differenet (a little hotter, a little heavier, or both), and he got bit. He had created a situation where he had no margin left. Not an unheard of receipe for an accident.

I had faith in the wings.

Engine mounts on the other hand.

I remember preflighting a C150 one day, and one of my habits was to reach and check the plugs by feel. Just to make sure the wires were not loose or such. I even got cross-eyed looks from my CFI for doing such things.

That day, I reached in and 3 out of the 4 top plugs were loose enough to spin by hand. Fucking plane (or actually the shitty mechanic) would have killed us that day.

I recognized one of his sons during an interview. He was my PE teacher in highschool about oh 15 years ago. They said that the father (pilot) was an experienced helicopter pilot who flew during Nam, so I imagine he had a lot of flight time under his belt.

Here is another dumbfuck.

Don't know the backstory, just found the vid.

Back Story here: http://www.supercub.org/forum/showthread.php?40591-Wow!-It-doesn-t-get-any-closer-than-this!&p=503483&viewfull=1#post503483

Oh dear... Have to 'fess up. Things do come back to haunt one, don't they? This was me, Selina, in GYYF. Of course I have already received this video a few times in the last couple of days. I think it was 1999 or 2000.

What can I say? It was hot, I had 2 passengers and thought I knew more than I did about short field takeoffs. This little field is just outside of Victoria B.C. and once we were in the air we headed straight to Nanaimo's LONG runway to land and assess damages. The only victims, other than my pride, were the gear fairings as I did a bit of landscaping on the way out.

What was I thinking? I sure didn't use correct short field procedures and quickly ran out of room. I knew I was in trouble and also knew I was committed to the takeoff. As we lifted off my right seat passenger, a more experienced pilot (as was the second passenger in the back), was quick enough to yell at me to push the nose down and was ready to do so himself if I didn't. That instinct to pull up is strong especially with the tops of the trees coming at you.

Just about the best learning experience I've every had... And probably the scariest.

Coincidentally I met the owner of this little field this past weekend at a fly-in and we had a little reminisce about my "incident". The field is still in use although I think they have removed a few more of the trees at the end. I don't think I'll be tackling it again although a little voice inside says perhaps I should go back without passengers and do it properly!

Overloaded, She should have aborted WAY early.

LOL! Ya definitely gotta do a good preflight at some of these FBOs. The ole 152 that I used to end-up with a lot had some issue with the front oleo strut, as everytime I'd go to preflight it, it was sitting there flat with not shock absorption capability. Must've been a leak. So I'd notify the FBO and they'd have to tow it to the shop and fill it up. Made me 45 minutes late to go flying every time.

Sounds like the doesn't know anything about aviation and didn't bother to learn after the accident either.
