THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT Over the week in individuals......................Moroney sits on her butt in the vault. Gabby falls off the beam. Gabby loses her balance on the parallel bars and misses a release. Weber doesn't make the all around finals. They're working hard, but the focus doesn't seem to be there in the individual efforts. Maybe over worked? |

Gabby also won an individual gold (maybe 2?)

Wieber is a local. I swear if I hear "Wieber Fever" one more time I'm gonna hire Tonya Harding to go bust her kneecaps.

It's a very demanding time for them, and they're 16 year old American girls. Just wish them luck and give your support. They're going to do the best they can.

Wieber was out of the all-around before they competed in the team event. She had to put it out of her head for the team event. To me, that shows some serious intestinal fortitude. You don't become a world-class athlete with a fragile psyche.
Wieber finished 4th in the all-around qualifier, but because her teammates finished 2nd and 3rd, she was out. Dumb-ass rule about only two gymnasts from each team competing in the all-around. The team won the all-around gold, Gabby won the individual all-around. Aly took the gold in the floor. McKayla fell on her ass, and still took the silver - testament to her dominance in the event. I'd say mission accomplished. Those girls have my respect. |

Think the judging has been biased against our girls.
Karoli just made our coach contest one of their decisions and it was overturned. |

The women's gymnastics team ranges in age from 15 to 18, with the vast majority being 16 or younger.
While the age of consent may vary in your state, or in this case country, for the sake of national pride in our athletes who've done a great job so far let's show a little class, okay? Thanks. |

1. There are about a half dozen girls in each event that are essentially equal. So it comes down to execution, luck, and what strikes the judges' fancy. Jordan won the all-around last year by .1 of a point. It is no shock that she gets edged out.
2. Because they are so equal, they all pick skills that push them to the edge. There is no margin for error, which caught up with McKayla on the vault yesterday. 3. Rumor today was that Jordan has a stress fracture, which if you look at some of her landings she does appear to wince. 4. There is no reason to be anything but proud of our gymnasts this year. There was only one event we didn't medal in. |

They have dominated. Both the team gold, and individual all around? We've NEVER done that. EVER. This was a history making team.
Oh, and a stress fracture? Landing on that repeatedly with fairly absurd energy? Yeah, fuck that. |

Why do we even participate in the olympics...seems like there is very little value added to the US by having a team.

USOC, via corporate sponsorships, mostly. I suppose that you could argue that some is very indirectly funded via state colleges and their support for athletic programs, but that's a reach. |

The United States Olympic Committee (USOC) is a non-profit organization that serves as the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and National Paralympic Committee (NPC)[1] for the United States and coordinates the relationship between the United States Anti-Doping Agency and the World Anti-Doping Agency and various international sports federations. Under the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act, the Committee is chartered under Title 36 of the United States Code. Despite this federal mandate, it receives no continuous financial assistance from the U.S. government. As a non-profit organization, the USOC is wholly dependent on private contributions and corporate sponsorship.[2]

I figure if I had to do something I trained my whole life for on international television I'd sure as hell fuck up. I have shot with the smallbore folks from which olympic shooters are recruited. No way in hell will I ever be at that level of skill at any point in my life, even if I devoted every minute of every day to it.
I'm not going to trash talk them over the internet. |

I was very impressed by Aly Raisman's singing(or at least mouthing) the lyrics for the national anthem.
She's one of very few U.S. medalists who managed to pull that off. The majority of them appear to be so spellbound or dazed by the experience they don't seem to realize where they are. Congrats to the team and congrats to the individuals. They made me proud. |
