Well that doesn't work, because the Soviets sent probes to the moon before us. They also sent probes to Venus and Mars before us. We need boots on the ground to claim it. Here I am! Send me! |

Actually, they played it down because it could have been the first dirty bomb on Mars. People have protested the use of RTG power supplies in the past because of the risk involved in putting a chunk of plutonium on the tip of a big rocket.. They've learned to keep their mouths shut about it. |

This rover should easily last 6 year, I think itll go about 10 years before the motors shit the bed. After that itll be a stationary sensor platform for a long assed time. V'Ger was run on RTG's and its still chucking away... |

As another poster pointed out in another thread, the JPL Team calculated Mars' location in the solar system and Gale crater's location in Mars' rotation at the time MSL would arrive on the 6th, aimed for a relatively tiny window and planted Curiosity with extreme accuracy without slowing it or entering orbit before deploying the MSL. They targeted Mars and bulls-eyed it with Curiosity. The ultimate windage and elevation corrections. Makes the landing all the more cool.

If those pics weren't as fake as the moon landings, that would be pretty cool. NASA is getting better with Photoshop and Adobe Premiere, I must admit. |

What I think is most interesting about the "black and white" pictures is that they arent. Three separate channels with different data. Wish I knew what wavelengths they each extended to and were approximating, then I could do some color correction/approximation and get some visible false color images out of it.
Maybe google will hold my answer |

Note that my MOA number was for the "group" of curiosity, the skycrane, heat shield, and parachute, not for the landing zone. Just to keep things accurate. (pun intended) |

If we put the money into it, we would have had a cheaper, more reliable replacement for the shuttle. Maybe two replacements (a heavy cargo lifter and a manned vehicle for astronauts). You mean like SLS and Orion which are still being built? |

The only true cancellation was the underperforming Ares I and it might still live as the ATK Libetty. An amazing thing happened two years ago, a unaimous senate and 3/4 of the congress voted to override the space policy of a sitting president and repudiate his attempte to cancel a major program. It isn't a secret but most of Arfcom is oblivious to the fact that both these programs are currently funded, on-track and under-budget in SPITE of Obama. |

Too bad they didn't work off of the Saturn V design. I was reading that the SLS in it's most powerful configuration will have about 20% more thrust, using a bunch of boosters all strapped together. A sixpack of F-1s would have been badass. |

PIA16029: Gale Crater Vista, in Glorious Color
Original Caption Released with Image: This is the first 360-degree panorama in color of the Gale Crater landing site taken by NASA's Curiosity rover. The panorama was made from thumbnail versions of images taken by the Mast Camera. Scientists will be taking a closer look at several splotches in the foreground that appear gray. These areas show the effects of the descent stage's rocket engines blasting the ground. What appeared as a dark strip of dunes in previous, black-and-white pictures from Curiosity can also be seen along the top of this mosaic, but the color images also reveal additional shades of reddish brown around the dunes, likely indicating different textures or materials.
