Nope. I seem to recall a story on AF1 in the gulf without fighter cover on 9/11

The electronics package they use on AF1 shuts down all planes within 1/2 mile. A fighter escort would crash when they flip the switch after takeoff.

I think an escort is an exception not the rule.
What could harm AF1 that a fighter could stop? a deliberate mid-air collision? not easy at the speeds jets fly at and realistically could a fighter (with non-wartime rules of engagement) stop an attempt at that? |

The F-15's had to race out to meet it though didn't they? I seem to recall a story of scrambling across the gulf because there were some fast moving planes that weren't identified (ended up being an unrelated excersize). The real reason is there's only 1 realistic threat to AF1 inside our borders, and that would be a ground based attack like a sholder fired rocket. In that scenario a fighter escort would be 99.9% useless, i say 99.9% because I suppose there's .1% chance the fighter could take the hit like in that crappy movie where they manuver in front of AF1 and take the missle lol.
Any fighter from another country would show up on our radar LONG before it got close to AF1. And there's very few privately owned jets capable of being fitted with air-to-air munitions. So they just pack AF1 full of counter-measures to defend it from ground-to-air during take off and landing. Another somewhat possible reason is it's easier to keep the wraps on 1 jets movements if your not setting up the fighter and tanker escorts from multiple bases that it would take to keep fighters on it 24/7. Basiclly less people to spill the beans. Imagine this times 11billion and I imagine that's what it would look like if you got a missle lock on AF1. ![]() |

I would be afraid of a small, fast civilian plane on a kamikaze mission. It wouldn't even have to be armed.

The President's schedule is public information and that jet is not something that can be concealed. Nothing else at the airport looks like it. Anyone can see where it is and when it flies. I expect the President, regardless of who it is, finds it easier to avoid explaining the military escort. So they stay out of view. |

AF1 routinely turns down honorary escorts even (especially?) overseas. They always go it alone. (Except for 9/11)

Concern about midair collision was the stated reason IIRC. I suspect that with the airspace restrictions in place around its flight path, any potential hostile aircraft would be spotted long before it got anywhere near AF1. |

Seems like a fighter escort would be much more effective flying at altitue where they could dive down on a threat instead of down in the weeds with the big jet doing the flyby to stoke dickhead's ego.
Of course that leads to the question: "Do you think the Secret Service has FACS/CCTs that could direct airstrikes by the escorting fighters once the president is on the ground?" Can't wait to see the shitstorm/stupidity that last comment stirs up. |
