Dickhead is in town and I saw AF1 flying low and slow over Austin. I didn't see any escort jets. I thought there was always an escort.

Nope. I seem to recall a story on AF1 in the gulf without fighter cover on 9/11

The electronics package they use on AF1 shuts down all planes within 1/2 mile. A fighter escort would crash when they flip the switch after takeoff.
Link Posted: 7/17/2012 3:13:08 PM EDT
I think an escort is an exception not the rule.

What could harm AF1 that a fighter could stop? a deliberate mid-air collision? not easy at the speeds jets fly at and realistically could a fighter (with non-wartime rules of engagement) stop an attempt at that?

USS Enterprise got the cloakiing device thanks to Spock. What is your next Question...Do I need to shave my dog's balls?

That was my reaction too. But I don't know shit about AF1.

Here in the days of BVR engagements, why would you think the fighters would be right of his wing?

never knew that

it also has internal missile bays, so a fighter escort would only get in the way if af1 had to use them

They were there, just 10k+ and out of your sight.

The F-15's had to race out to meet it though didn't they? I seem to recall a story of scrambling across the gulf because there were some fast moving planes that weren't identified (ended up being an unrelated excersize).

The real reason is there's only 1 realistic threat to AF1 inside our borders, and that would be a ground based attack like a sholder fired rocket. In that scenario a fighter escort would be 99.9% useless, i say 99.9% because I suppose there's .1% chance the fighter could take the hit like in that crappy movie where they manuver in front of AF1 and take the missle lol.

Any fighter from another country would show up on our radar LONG before it got close to AF1. And there's very few privately owned jets capable of being fitted with air-to-air munitions. So they just pack AF1 full of counter-measures to defend it from ground-to-air during take off and landing.

Another somewhat possible reason is it's easier to keep the wraps on 1 jets movements if your not setting up the fighter and tanker escorts from multiple bases that it would take to keep fighters on it 24/7. Basiclly less people to spill the beans.

Imagine this times 11billion and I imagine that's what it would look like if you got a missle lock on AF1.

Link Posted: 7/17/2012 3:50:17 PM EDT
I would be afraid of a small, fast civilian plane on a kamikaze mission. It wouldn't even have to be armed.

Actually - not. Not by a long shot.

Does AF1 have one door gunner or two?

Retired Space Shuttle door gunners.

Also, I would be willing to bet there were a few "escorts" that hung out around AF1, at least during the Kennedy and Clinton administrations.

It had an escort of F-22Cs with active cloaking.

probably the back up that flies when they are on longer routes just in case primary has a mech issue they just keep rolling

Space shuttle door gunners were pulled from the pool of ex- AF1 rear gunners. Well known fact.

I can think of a few things that could be done to it by other aircraft. The President's schedule is public information and that jet is not something that can be concealed. Nothing else at the airport looks like it. Anyone can see where it is and when it flies.

I expect the President, regardless of who it is, finds it easier to avoid explaining the military escort. So they stay out of view.

AF1 routinely turns down honorary escorts even (especially?) overseas. They always go it alone. (Except for 9/11)

I heard or read something similar. Concern about midair collision was the stated reason IIRC. I suspect that with the airspace restrictions in place around its flight path, any potential hostile aircraft would be spotted long before it got anywhere near AF1.

Stop insulting Dickheads

We all know he's a cocksucker

Link Posted: 7/17/2012 4:49:09 PM EDT
Seems like a fighter escort would be much more effective flying at altitue where they could dive down on a threat instead of down in the weeds with the big jet doing the flyby to stoke dickhead's ego.

Of course that leads to the question: "Do you think the Secret Service has FACS/CCTs that could direct airstrikes by the escorting fighters once the president is on the ground?"

Can't wait to see the shitstorm/stupidity that last comment stirs up.

I think they are required to by law and cannot charge the Secret Service for it.

If you were piloting a well armed F16, escorting the current POTUS, would you be proud?
