I dont think our military wants to cover this president at all.

Then you don't know our military pilots.  Show me a military pilot that would refuse a mission to escort AF1 to the absolute best of his/her ability - and I'll show you a petulant POS that doesn't deserve to wear this country's uniform.

Fortunately - I am certain such a person does not exist.

Another somewhat possible reason is it's easier to keep the wraps on 1 jets movements if your not setting up the fighter and tanker escorts from multiple bases that it would take to keep fighters on it 24/7. Basiclly less people to spill the beans.

Imagine this times 11billion and I imagine that's what it would look like if you got a missle lock on AF1.

I can think of a few things that could be done to it by other aircraft. The President's schedule is public information and that jet is not something that can be concealed. Nothing else at the airport looks like it. Anyone can see where it is and when it flies.

I expect the President, regardless of who it is, finds it easier to avoid explaining the military escort. So they stay out of view.

The president's schedule is not public information.

No, not fucking once.  You don't have to like the man to have respect for your country, your oath and yourself.

I think he meant the ENTIRE schedule is not public information, although much of it us.

I keep checking the mailbox

Enroute, no. But it's destination cities are usually covered by a TFR.

IIRC, any jet he flies on is called AF1. It doesn't have to be the 747.

Correct, and there's two of the 747's, the vice and first wookie get to troll around on the spare.

Any USAF aircraft is called "Air force 1"
A Navy aircraft would be "Navy 1"
His choppers are called "Marine 1" because they are USMC.
A private aircraft would be called "Executive 1"

Did they land it on I35? I can't think of any other reason they would shut it down for public use... I really appreciated that detour I had to take today.

I think an escort is an exception not the rule.

What could harm AF1 that a fighter could stop? a deliberate mid-air collision? not easy at the speeds jets fly at and realistically could a fighter (with non-wartime rules of engagement) stop an attempt at that?

This has always been my understanding.

You don't think some guy in a fast civi plane couldn't time it to get to AF1 while it was on the taxiway?

When President Bush came to Boise, Idaho around 2006, Air Force One was escorted by 4 F15's.  There was also a KC135 tanker, and a C17.  Two of the F15's preceded the flight and 2 F15's were in the rear.  There may have been more planes I did not see, but this was what was visable.

When Bush came in to SLC, UT in Aug. of 08, I was doing my multi-engine rating at the time and my instructor and I were going to go out that afternoon. They shut down the tarmac and we just cancelled our flight for that day because it just wasn't worth waiting around for clearance. ETA - F-16's were flying around while it landed. We listened to approach as AF1 came in while we were still sitting in the hangers debating what to do.

The only other time I remember seeing AF1 was when I was fishing off of Prince of Whales island in AK. We saw it overhead and it was flanked by what looked like F-15's, maybe they were F-22's. (Could tell they were twin engined but at that altitude who knows) That was July of 2006. IIRC Bush was coming home from a G-8 summit or something like that from Russia.
