THE IMAGE ABOVE IS A PAID ADVERTISEMENT I now need to track down a suitable drum, that may take awhile, I do see a bunch of ads on craigslist for drums though. Let's see how you set yours up. I need ideas. |

My old UDS. I used 3/8" threaded rod and 22" grills from Lowe's. My burn pan was a steel air cleaner from a junk yard. This one had three levels, top two for meat, the bottom one for an aluminum pan with the meat's marinade to ensure the meat stayed moist. I replaced this one with a horizontal Silver Smoke, I really enjoy using it since I can control the temps better.
Good luck.

I can use the rods to either hold the grate or hang meat off of. |

I had always thought that the "U" in UDS stood for upright. But since it stands for ugly I will show off my Big Baby horizontal drum smoker.
A whole bunch of ribs smoking away.
A pork butt on its way to deliciousness.
Sadly this smoker is about done. I have used the hell out of it and It has lasted me 3 years. I can't even guess how much meat has been smoked on it, hundreds of pounds to be sure. I scored a drum with a removable top recently so I will soon be turning that into my own version of the ultimate UDS, ultimate to me that is. |

Here's mine. Made from a 55 gallon food grade oil drum and a cheap $50 Weber knockoff. I have run it as long as 16 hours on a single load of charcoal.

Do you use an air compressor to blow air into the fire to maintain a constant heat or am I missing something? How do you control the temperature without adjustable vents or a controllable fan? |

The ball valve is an adjustable vent. Also the lid has a vent. He also has 3 other vents on the bottom it looks like with caps on them. He can remove a cap on one or more to increase airflow as well. |

I'm still kicking myself in the ass for that move... |

Not a very good picture, and no action shots, but here is mine:
I used a weber lid and cut the ring from the bottom half so the lid would say in place. It leaks very little and hold temp like a mofo! It held 225-230*F for a solid 16hrs one day, I may have made about 2 very slight adjustments to the intake valve. I also have 2 grates inside and a very ghetto made charcoal basket ![]() |

Barrel acquired.
I went ahead and bought a new, unlined one for 2 reasons: 1) I don't have to worry about what was stored in the barrel previously. 2) Unlined means I don't have to burn out, scrub out the epoxy lining food grade barrels have inside. Here it is with the lid from the cheap Weber knockoff I bought. ![]() |

I primered it with high temp primer then just put 3 coats of regular krylon paint overtop. Seems to be holding up well so far, however I don't leave it outside. I also added a shelf on the side. I'll get some pictures this weekend and post them up. |

Small Batch of ATB's, I think I can get 75 on it (I pin them in 5x5 grids usually. I can get 3 grids on it. That is probably 3 4x4 grids and one is broken. I have been trying to catch up on projects - guess I need to look into getting my sander and actually paint my uds. |

I went ahead and ordered a charcoal basket and other parts from here, instead of rolling my own.
Kinda going against the UDS "cheaper the better" rule, but for less than $150, I will have a new good sized smoker for half the price of a Weber Smokey Mountain. https://www.bigpoppasmokers.com/store/drum-smoker-kit-parts |

Added a $4 pizza pan from Walmart to the bottom with lag bolts to catch the ash. The real money adds up with the SS hardware. It's hard to keep out the zinc and galvanized stuff. |

While I am waiting for the rest of the parts to come in, I took care of painting it. I primered it and covered the barrel in high heat grill paint and the lid is yellow engine paint.
I decided against the killer bee theme, and will go for a hazmat or nuclear waste barrel look. Need to find some stencils for that. That should freak people out when they think I am cooking their dinner in a nuclear waste barrel. I'll tell them it is my charcoal microwave oven. ![]() |

Looked at what is in the kit. $25 for the grill, $10 for the drill bit, $15 for the thermometer, $5 for assorted nuts and bolts, $30 for a fire basket, $25 for brass nipples, valve and conduit nuts. Doing it under $100 is not all that easy.
That said, personally I liked the ball valve method of controlling the draft, and I do not like his method of closing off the exhaust (the lip of the lid is taller than the center - if it rains (and it will) any water will end up in the pit. Since you are starting with an open top - just get the appropriate sized pipe fitting and screw it in. You can always put a can over it to keep the rain out between cooks. - Not that you are already looking to upgrade, but there are some cooler handles out there. I did not bother to put handles on mine. You can use a hook screwed into the bottom of the lid to hold the lid to the side to the drum. fwiw, we have a lot of serious BBQ'ers in my little home town. Neighbor is a Klose owner, but a guy down the street tried to build the ultimate UDS. I think he started with a 5' propane tank... It is trailer mounted (and I am sure weighs more than 500lbs). |

I didn't order the whole kit, just the basket, basket hook, lid hood and handle and the thing for hanging utensils.
I also found a 'Toxic' and nuclear symbol I downloaded and printed out. Going make the stencils now. |
