Hey, i like Tom Cruise even if he is a flake. That may even be why hes such a good actor. Like his role in COLLATERAL. Fucking classic. But as Jack Reacher...? Reacher is supposed to be like 6'4 or 6'6 and 250+ lbs... and scared people by just walking up to them.

I don't care what you guys say. Dude is a good actor and for the most parts puts out good movies. At least he really studies up for his roles and likes doing his own stunts... You can't say he wasn't a bad ass in Collateral. They only bad part of that movie was the end and Jamie Foxx being the one who took him down... |

I generally like Tom Cruise but I don't think he fits the image of Jack Reacher for all the reasons listed above. I think Patrick Warburton would have been a better choice personally.
I will still see the movie, though this wasn't my favorite of the book series. Buy your Steyr GBs now before they skyrocket in value if they do more movies. |

Well lets take this a little further...
How about Cruise as Rollin of York, The Gunslinger...Or taking over from Clint Eastwood as the Man with No Name...Or maybe doing Death Wish 12 since Charlie Bronson is too old.. I, like a lot of folks who have read all the Jack Reacher books, won't be going to the movie but it won't matter. There will be enough folks that don't know anything about the books that will go to make it a moderate success. I consider it another great opportunity for Hollywood to bring a real hero to life, but they will miss it again because they don't have vision anymore. The same tired old stars in remakes of every movie for the last 40 years... |

Tom Cruise has played some excellent tough guy roles, Vincent in Collateral being one of them.
He's 5'5" or something though, not 6'5". Just not believable as a physical force like Reacher. If you haven't read the books it might not make much difference to you, but he's just not physically imposing enough to be believable. |

I read an interview after all this and the other thread on Reacher was posted as I am not familiar with the books. Child says that "Reacher's height and size were a metaphorfor what an unstoppable force he was in life." The actuall measurements were open for interpretation in film.

I've read all the Reacher books, several times. Tom Cruise can act and he's done some decent work. He is not, however, Jack Reacher. He's so far from Jack Reacher that you can't get a bus to Jack Reacher from where Tom is.
The Chevelle in the trailer had better have been stolen, because Jack Reacher doesn't own anything except a Passport (expired in later books), a toothbrush and some cash. In two books he briefly had a house that was left to him, but he couldn't deal with staying in one place, so he hit the road again. Reacher is a wanderer. He is looking to discover the USA that he never really knew, having grown up on military bases before he joined. Jack is very tolerant of folks, up to a point. He's blunt, but polite. He's also the smartest person you'd be likely to meet. This series is going to get butchered. |

I can't wait to see it, not because of the books, but because Christopher McQuarrie, the brilliant writer of The Usual Suspects and director of Way of the Gun is directing the film.
We know Cruise can play a convincing badass (Collateral, The Last Samurai.) I would much rather it be a small guy who can actually act than a fucking professional wrestler or country singer  just because they're tall. |
