Quoted: Tag. Please please please shoot it with .308. I'd even supply the ammo. I plan to. My test plan for both plates (with and without spall protection) is as follows: 9mm .45 7.62x39 wolf .223 .308 m193 m855 if I can get my hands on some, I'll have to check my massive piles of shit to see if I have any. I probably do. ETA: One shot of each, on video. |

I would like a link to these plates from whoever has it please.

I get why we are trying to de-spall it. Its to prevent Bullet fragments from blowing out and causing collateral damage. Am i correct? Wouldn't this be unnecessary with things like mag pouches and other stuff on your plate carrier? or is this just added security?

Wouldn't this be unnecessary with things like mag pouches and other stuff on your plate carrier? or is this just added security? Great question!! The mag pouches are usually made from 500-1000D nylon, which will slow down a fragment by about .1 fps. Take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCn8KOoBNxs That would be your arms, neck and legs. Alright you've sparked my curiosity, What about the energy of the bullet impacting the plate itself, I see the dispersion of the bullet fragment out but what about the energy into the plate. i guess the push force? I don't know that much about these things. |

I'm guessing, as I've never been shot in the chest while wearing plates. I'd wager we have a few service members that can expound on my guess. |

op, this is a great job you are doing, by testing this and including all the detailed pictures. Something to consider: would you try one of the plates with a sheet of polyethylene in front of it as spall protection, instead of kevlar? I had read about the ability of poly to contain stop some bullets, and it is possible that the inexpensive but commonly available while poly used in things as simple as cutting boards could do the trick.
this is a video where a guy stops 45 acp with 4 1/4" sheets (total 1") of poly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtU2Fny6KEU from working with plastics, I think that if you heated the poly, you could bend and form it to a curved armor shape. but then again, the kevlar solution is proven and might weigh less. |

I'd have to buy the materials and the heat gun. |

Are we taking bets? I say it defeats all handgun ammunition but none of the rifle ammo.

We shot some ceramic plates a few weeks ago, both in and out of carriers that had soft armor underneath. Very eye-opening, to say the least.

Could someone please IM me the link to this armor? I'd appreciate it and say good things about you for 5 minutes.
