**THERE WILL BE NO LINK TO THE SOURCE OF THESE (FOR NOW) TO KEEP THE THREAD FROM BEING LOCKED FOR ADVERTISING**

(those of you that have the link, are welcome to share it, and it's not hard to find)
So I got my armor in the mail. I've improved on the application process for the kelvar.
I'll let the pics do the talking.
Get your gear together.
I'm using a spray bottle to apply moisture to help the gorilla glue along.
Also, I'm using disposable brushes to apply the glue evenly.

Got music from the kindle fire, whiskey, dip, and miscellaneous tools and shit.
A few pics of the plates before I begin.

Use a 1" block of wood to outline the plate on the kevlar:

Then use a razor knife, or improvise if you can't find yours.

[#1]

Spray the kevlar

paint on the gorilla glue

Flip the plate onto the kevlar, and press

Wait for it to dry before you do the edges.
A video is uploading now, just of how easy the blade cuts the kevlar.

added:

I plan to go shoot an Omega plate with and without spall protection until failure this sunday.

*update*
So I tried something different on the edges, and boy did it turn out nice!!!!!

I basically used a simple board press to press the back down after pulling it tight. That made these beautiful edges:

Finished product, and ready for testing:

Had a few posts about the thickness and here you go. Not much thicker at all.

Ready to rock and roll.

I know the kevlar works. I've already tested it.

I'm really here to test two things:

1) what will the Omega armor stand up to

2) show you the differences between no spall protection and my method

Here is where we shot a ar500 plate with xm193

No spalling

I plan to.

My test plan for both plates (with and without spall protection) is as follows:

9mm

.45

7.62x39

wolf .223

.308

m193

m855 if I can get my hands on some, I'll have to check my massive piles of shit to see if I have any. I probably do.
ETA: One shot of each, on video.

I get why we are trying to de-spall it. Its to prevent Bullet fragments from blowing out and causing collateral damage. Am i correct? Wouldn't this be unnecessary with things like mag pouches and other stuff on your plate carrier? or is this just added security?

Great question!!

The mag pouches are usually made from 500-1000D nylon, which will slow down a fragment by about .1 fps.

Take a look at this video:

That would be your arms, neck and legs.

Alright you've sparked my curiosity, What about the energy of the bullet impacting the plate itself, I see the dispersion of the bullet fragment out but what about the energy into the plate. i guess the push force? I don't know that much about these things.

Well, that is going to hurt like a motherfucker.

I would equate it to someone hitting you in the chest as hard as they can with a metal base ball bat.

I'm guessing, as I've never been shot in the chest while wearing plates.

I'd wager we have a few service members that can expound on my guess.

Didn't I read that some have put some padding or foam behind the plate?

op, this is a great job you are doing, by testing this and including all the detailed pictures. Something to consider: would you try one of the plates with a sheet of polyethylene in front of it as spall protection, instead of kevlar?  I had read about the ability of poly to contain stop some bullets, and it is possible that the inexpensive but commonly available while poly used in things as simple as cutting boards could do the trick.

this is a video where a guy stops 45 acp with 4 1/4" sheets (total 1")  of poly.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gtU2Fny6KEU

from working with plastics, I think that if you heated the poly, you could bend and form it to a curved armor shape. but then again, the kevlar solution is proven and might weigh less.

Most people put soft armor behind it.

Something like this:  soft armor
