My Dad had this commemerative shell supposedly from my Dad's Uncle Caeser who served overseas in the US Army during WWI  but who died in 1918 after the wars end  returning to NY from the influenza outbreak.
I got this medal from the city honoring WWI vets among the items that were long lost but I recently recovered .
Link to my post of WWII pics my Dad took

The shell top is distored out of round, but measures ~77-80mm

I've seen WWI commemorative canisters and and actual de-mil projos embossed and engraved. Most are indeed French 75's.

Probably common, most likely shrapnel or HE.

Almost certainly.  It was by far the most common on the Allied side.

That is a nice piece of Trench Art

Thanks do you know anything else about 'trench art'?  Are you saying soldiers engraved things themselves like schrimshaw?

Soldiers did some of it, but a lot came from locals to sell to tourists after the war.  Nice item either way.

It was fairly common practice, many were made into ash trays, some shaped into chalices...the things were  plentiful, and  let's face it, shit gets boring sometimes

It's a Large Caliber Markings list from the Western Front Museum

Looks to be a 7,7 cm Feld Kanone 96

Fascinating!

Slight high jack

How about this.. I haven't cleaned the bottom but it says 90mm m12 m12b 1944. It weighs about 40 pounds and is hollow. I would guess a training round but for what. I thinking of painting it to look like a giant ballistic tip round. Yard sale find $10.

Yup, so a german shell casing with Allied, either French or US, "trench art".  It looks very similar to the French 75 though.

Wow. Great work Guy's.  This info then implies my Dad's uncle might have picked up the shell  case after the battle as a souvenir. Then had it engraved to enhance the memory value for himself of family. He died before he got home.  Makes me wonder what else he brought back.
