Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge and Slash is a talent on the guitar and his vocal ability is one of best in the business.

I witnessed and loved Metallica during the Ride the Lightning era, but I never knew that. It's tough for me to pick the best frontman/player, because the two are generally mutually exclusive. All the truly legendary frontmen I can think of were untethered –– it was just about great presence. I'll be at Iron Maiden/Alice Cooper Jul 18 in Detroit, on that note. ![]() |

OP............Hetfield is what is called a "rhythm guitarits" in a band. Quoted definition a rhythm guitarits is to provide all or part of the rhythmic pulse in conjunction with singers or other instruments; and to provide all or part of the harmony, i.e. the chords, where a chord is a group of notes played together. Therefore, the basic technique of rhythm guitar is to hold down a series of chords with the fretting hand while strumming rhythmically with the other hand. More developed rhythm techniques include arpeggios, damping, riffs, chord solos, and complex strums.
This is the role he fills with Kirk which is obvious and he is not a lead guitarist. While James is a great musician and has a great voice he is not (IMHO) the greatest guitar frontman ever. James unfortunately in his career has not matched the charisma, presence and lead guitar work of Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimmi Hendrix, David Gillmore, Warren Haynes and many many others that I may have overlooked. |

Hetfield wrote the lyrics. Ulrich, Burton, Hammet and Mustaine were all in on the music with Hetfield, and they all recorded their own parts. Not so much with Smashing Pumpkins (Corgan wrote and recorded multiple instruments creating the first albums damn near by himself). We get it, you like Metallica. So do a lot of us... let's just not get ridiculous about how great Hetfield is/was. |

Golden pipes that were rivaled maybe by Freddie Mercury and/or Brad Delp, who didn't really play, and played with mediocrity respectively. 2) Emmett's singing live was every bit as good as it was on studio stuff. Rare in rock, and something that Hetfield doesn't even come close to. 3) Emmett was the only guitarist for the band, pulling double duty lead/rhythm... and the dude shredded. . . . . . . I'm a huge Metallica fan, and he's not the best of all time, but holy shit, he's pretty damn good and at least a ways up on the list. Pretty fucking ridiculous all the folks on here saying he's a complete no talent hack that sucks ass.
Guess what, I like the Cowboys too. Hate the fucking 49ers, but guess what, Joe Montana was the shit and Jerry Rice is the best receiver of all time. Is what it is, no reason to make yourself look like a complete ignorant asshole and deny acknowledgement of the dudes accomplishments. I guess some people just get off to being the contrarian on the internet. |

Um...sometimes he yells, but he's capable of very melodic singing as well. You obviously haven't heard much of their catalog if you think he's tone deaf. Again, you don't have to like his voice, but he's far from tone deaf. Shitty song, on a shitty new Metallica release, but a good example of you talking out of your ass and Hetfield singing on key (though you may still hate his voice).

Shitty song, on a shitty new Metallica release, but a good example of you talking out of your ass and Hetfield singing on key (though you may still hate his voice). Again, (and I say this as a long-time Metallica fan): How a frontman sings live is a better metric of their ability. Hell, I can be manipulated into sounding like I have a great voice given enough studio time and a decent engineer, and I couldn't carry a tune if you gave me a bucket. Regarding the parts in blue, skip to 2:15-2:45 and tell me he's on pitch... That's a pretty typical "live" Metallica experience when it comes to Hetfield's voice. Further proof (where singing an actual melody is required): Not taking anything away from him or the band, but Hetfield isn't in the same league as truly good frontmen, with a guitar or without. He has limited range, is often off-key, and the best thing about him as part of the act is the guitar work. Sorry guys, but he's just not that good. |
